Small business needs led Cornerstone to build a lending program from scratch

Cornerstone Community Federal Credit Union has spent the last three years building a commercial lending program from the ground up. When the program launched in summer 2021, officials at the credit union thought they might be able to build their commercial lending portfolio by about $1 million a year. "We blew past that like 30 times over," said CEO Eric Hepkins. The portfolio now stands at about $31 million. Cornerstone lends to businesses in Erie and Niagara counties. The program’s early success has been the result of careful planning, strategic hiring and a shared enthusiasm for the work. "It’s really unique in this marketplace to have a hand in building something almost from the ground up," said Jeff Sentiff, senior vice president and director of retail for Cornerstone. Sentiff joined the credit union last year, one of several new hires made to bolster the new commercial lending program. "If we’re going to do it, we’re going to do it right," Hepkins said.
