The newly appointed Minister for Digitisation, Bogdan Gruia Ivan laid out his priorities to speed up Romania’s digital transition as the country lags behind European peers . Social democrat Ivan recently took over Bucharest’s Innovation, Research and Digitalisation portfolio following a government reshuffle. Romania ranks 15th in terms of connectivity according to the Digital Economy and Society Index (2022), the EU indicator of digital preparedness, prompting the new government to prioritise the digital transformation. Despite the country’s affordable broadband costs and extensive coverage of high-capacity networks, the fixed broadband rate remains at 66%, eleven points below the EU average. Ivan has promised swift action on top priorities like digital infrastructures, interoperability, governmental cloud, and AI. But a specific timeline or action plan is still to be set. The National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) allocates €5.97 billion, a fifth of the total amount designated to Romania, to digital objectives, including the digital transformation of public services, which requires clear rules, a specific task force for implementation, and collaboration among stakeholders.
