NHS set to spend extra £1 billion for digital transformation

NHS logo with coins placed around it An additional £1 billion ($1.3 billion) has been allocated to NHS technology following Health Secretary Wes Streeting’s statement that moving the NHS from ‘analogue to digital’ is one of the three big shifts the UK Government will focus on. Following supplier consultations, the Digital Workplace Solutions 2 framework value was increased from £1.5 billion ($2 billion) to £2.5 billion ($3.3 billion). This extra funding will be spent on improving hardware and software capabilities. The NHS Shared Business Services (NHS SBS) procurement notice for this framework is now looking for contractors with deep experience in areas where the NHS needs the most digital support, namely IT infrastructure and software development. This expanded contract will see a total of 30 technology suppliers work with the NHS to boost digital capabilities, including making improvements to the NHS app to give users more control over their data and better access to healthcare services. Achieving digital patient records, a feat that has proven extremely difficult to reach is another goal of the NHS.
