[co-author: Michael Niehaus] Following the political agreement between the EU Parliament and Council in December 2023, the EU AI Act is set to become the new key pillar of the EU’s AI strategy. The AI Act is widely expected to be at the forefront of AI regulation, setting the standard for AI regulatory frameworks globally. In this article, we share our key takeaways from our recent webinar titled "AI Act – The European Approach on Regulating AI", which was part of our "AI, Big Data and Law –Digital Transformation" webinar series. The EU AI Act and its Legislative Process On 8 December 2023, as a crucial step in the legislative process, the European Parliament and the Council reached a political agreement on the essential parts of the AI Act (see our article of 11 December 2023 ). Once the final wording is coordinated, the AI Act will be formally approved and enter into force following its publication in the EU’s Official Journal (which is expected in the coming weeks).
