The company, based in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, said that its franchise stores, subsidiaries outside of the U.S. and its foil balloons Anagram business are not part of the restructuring and will remain core components of its business. The chain is planning an expedited restructuring that it said would substantially lower its debt and free up cash. The company has secured a commitment for $150 million in debtor-in-possession financing. It said the financing, which is subject to court approval, would provide ample cash to continue operations. In November, the New York-based chain warned in its third-quarter earnings report that due to an uncertain economic environment, the company could not make assurances that it could generate enough cash or that future borrowings would be sufficient to repay indebtedness or fund other liquidity needs. At least a score of reasons help to explain the failure. But one particular cause stands out: qualms about letting go of the past. Effective digital transformations must recognize the need for a fresh start, re-examining every aspect of management with new eyes, and a passion for enabling real change, not change in name only. In persuading executives to get started on a digital transformation, it can be tempting to understate the scale of the change, or the length of the transformation journey, and talk of building on the past, as if this is simply merely updating practices that are no longer right for the time. Such language removes any hint of implicitly criticizing executives for unwitting mis-steps taken in the past: it offers the solace that they were merely doing what everyone else thought at the time was right. In 2022, the Global Digital Health Forum hosted its first hybrid conference, gathering over 400 attendees in person and more than 1,000 virtually. While balancing catching up with friends and colleagues and attending sessions (the agenda was packed; watch recorded sessions until March here ) was difficult at times, I used the forum, as always, to reflect on the state of digital health and future trends and challenges. What remains constant is that technological innovation is moving quicker than we can implement it. For example, we are grappling with how to use artificial intelligence to improve health outcomes without introducing additional bias into health care. As we progress from digitizing (adapting processes and tools to digital technologies) to digital transformation (the process of revamping the health sector to maximize the benefits of using information and communications technology to improve service quality and efficiency), we need our enabling environments to keep up with the pace of rapidly changing technology.
