The Offshore Oil Business Is Gushing Again

Rigs that haven’t been used in years are setting out to sea as demand for energy surges. ‘Everyone started drilling again.’ Transocean’s $1.2 billion Deepwater Titan, which will soon drill for oil in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Transocean The $1.2 billion Deepwater Titan sat idle in a Singaporean shipyard for five years, looking like an abandoned cruise ship with a derrick attached to its deck. Soon this vessel that spans nearly three football fields will depart for the deepest waters of the Gulf of Mexico, where its crew will be able to drill 8 miles below the seafloor in search of oil for Chevron Corp. The hunt for offshore petroleum is on again, fueled by a surge in global demand for energy, supply disruptions triggered by the war in Ukraine and crude prices that remain above prepandemic levels. Other giant rigs such as Titan that were dormant near the end of the last decade are also now operating in deep waters along the coast of Brazil, while rigs lacking propulsion are mining shallower waters in the Middle East after hitching rides to that part of the world on tugboats. Sen. David LaFountain: Heating relief the first act of business in Augusta

In the midst of Maine’s winter season, many people across our state are struggling to stay warm given the surge in home heating and energy costs. I heard from countless residents of our district about their needs, and am proud to say the Legislature delivered relief in a bipartisan manner. This was such an important bill for us to pass, and has set a hopeful tone for me as I start my term as your state senator. Gov. Janet Mills has signed into law L.D. 3 , the Emergency Winter Energy Relief Program. One of the biggest provisions in this measure will send $450 relief checks to over 800,000 Maine taxpayers. Individuals making less $100,000 and couples making less than $200,000 on their 2021 state tax returns will be eligible for relief. L.D. 3 includes critical funding for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), and emergency fuel assistance, both of which are administered by Community Action Agencies like Kennebec Valley Community Action Program. To learn if you’re eligible for these benefits, contact KVCAP at 207-622-4761. In addition, this package bolsters funding for the Emergency Housing Relief Fund to keep Mainers in their homes this winter. Learn more about the […]

Selling Artificial Intelligence To The Business: Keep It Clear, Keep It Simple

Selling Artificial Intelligence To The Business: Keep It Clear, Keep It Simple

AI, complicated but beneficialgetty Many business leaders are enthusiastic about artificial intelligence, but when it comes to investing in the technology, they may be bewitched, bothered, and bewildered. It doesn’t have to be this way. We canvassed people who work closely with AI solutions and asked them to share their experiences on the best approaches to sell AI 00 the right AI, at the right time, to business leaders. For starters, it’s imperative to “show ‘cognitive courtesy,’” advises Bjorn Austraat , senior vice president and head of AI acceleration at Truist . “Invest time and effort up front to translate difficult technical concepts into plain English. Likewise, create a compelling, properly framed vision for all project participants to ensure alignment and productive collaboration.” Austraat explains that he uses a “simple phrase” to advance the vision of AI. The Young Founder Who Fooled JPMorgan, According to JPMorgan

The Young Founder Who Fooled JPMorgan, According to JPMorgan

Kiersten Essenpreis Charlie Javice promised to simplify the college financial aid process. It was a compelling pitch. Especially, as now seems likely, to those with little firsthand knowledge of financial aid. When JPMorgan Chase paid $175 million to acquire a college financial planning company called Frank in September 2021, it heralded the “unique opportunity for deeper engagement” with the five million students Frank worked with at more than 6,000 American institutions of higher education. Then last month, the biggest bank in the country did something extraordinary: It said it had been conned. In a lawsuit, JPMorgan claimed that Frank’s young founder, Charlie Javice, had engaged in an elaborate scheme to stuff that list of five million customers with fakery. “To cash in, Javice decided to lie,” the suit said. “Including lying about Frank’s success, Frank’s size and the depth of Frank’s market penetration.” Ms. Javice, through her lawyer, has said the bank’s claims are untrue. JPMorgan’s legal filing reads like pulp nonfiction, with jaw-dropping accusations. Among them: that Ms. Javice and Olivier Amar, Frank’s chief growth and acquisition officer, faked their customer list and hired a data science professor to help pull the wool over the eyes of the […]

Abandoned shopping carts cost taxpayers thousands of dollars

Abandoned shopping carts cost taxpayers thousands of dollars

‘Sober bar’ owner says she’s struggling to meet unprecedented demands New York CNN — Santa Fe, New Mexico, paid a local contractor $47,000 to round up about 3,000 shopping carts around the city in 2021 and 2022. Fayetteville, North Carolina, spent $78,468 collecting carts from May 2020 to October 2022. Shopping carts keep wandering away from their stores, draining taxpayers’ coffers, causing blight and frustrating local officials and retailers. Abandoned shopping carts are a scourge to neighborhoods, as wayward carts block intersections, sidewalks and bus stops. They occupy handicap spots in parking lots and wind up in creeks, ditches and parks. And they clog municipal drainage and waste systems and cause accidents . There is no national data on shopping cart losses, but US retailers lose an estimated tens of millions of dollars every year replacing lost and damaged carts, say shopping cart experts. They pay vendors to rescue stray carts and fork over fines to municipalities for violating laws on shopping carts. They also miss out on sales if there aren’t enough carts for customers during peak shopping hours. Last year, Walmart paid $23,000 in fines related to abandoned shopping carts to the small town of Dartmouth, Massachusetts, […]
