How Women in Process Mining are a Driving Force in AI and Hyperautomation

How Women in Process Mining are a Driving Force in AI and Hyperautomation

A number of organizations have formed that promote women’s contributions in the technology field, with a focus on developing career paths, technical expertise, visibility within the field, and more. In fact, at Acceleration Economy, our parent company’s annual Summit North America event hosts a Women in Tech track that brings together female leaders from the Microsoft business applications ecosystem to network with other women as well as learn from empowering messages and discussions. I was privileged to play an organizing role in that gathering in the fall of 2022. So, I was excited when I recently had the opportunity to connect with a leader from another organization helping to advance women’s contributions to the technology sector: Women in Process Mining , or WIPM. This organization provides a community for women to strengthen their leadership skills, learn more about process mining, and amplify their influence. How Women in Process Mining was Founded Towards the end of 2021, Christine Hunter , VP of Field Marketing, North America at Celonis, had the opportunity to learn about organizations designed to help women advance in technology fields. This prompted her to begin researching and identifying the need for a community to serve women in […]

Plan now for the internet’s transformation by the metaverse and Web3

Plan now for the internet’s transformation by the metaverse and Web3

Today, the internet is a disparate collection of sites, apps and platforms. Because they are separate from one another, they lack interoperability and data portability. So, despite huge advances made through digital transformation, this current model will eventually constrain businesses. In fact, 95% of executives surveyed for the 2022 Accenture Technology Vision report believe that future digital platforms will need to offer unified experiences, enabling interoperability of customers’ data across different platforms and spaces. However, thanks to two emerging concepts, a new form of internet is emerging that will transcend these limitations: 1) the metaverse continuum, an evolution of the internet that enables people to participate in a persistent shared experience across real-world and virtual realms, and 2) Web3 , or emerging efforts to build a “distributed” layer to the internet via technologies such as blockchain and tokenization. No compatible source was found for this media. Rebuilding cybersecurity threat detection and response Taken together, these are showing us the next generation of the internet — one that moves beyond the fragmented interaction of today into a new world of contiguous immersive experiences. Web3 and the metaverse: The internet reimagined Put simply, the digital world is in the early stages […]

Danone eyes exit from US organic dairy, including its Colorado-born Horizon milk business

Food giant Danone is considering getting out of organic dairy in North America and will consider selling its Colorado-born Horizon Organic brand as part of an effort to focus on Danone’s most profitable businesses. Danone North America, co-headquartered in Broomfield and White Plains, New York, is the parent company of the Horizon Organic brands, the milk and dairy business that was started in Boulder in 1991 and was later acquired by Danone. The Paris-based company announced Thursday that its considering options for both its Horizon Organic and Wallaby organic dairy businesses in North America. The move is part of a review of all of Danone’s various brands, which span from milk to non-dairy plant-based milks, infant formula, yogurts, coffee creamers and other products. The North American organic brands encompass milks, creamers, cheeses and butters totaling about 3% of Danone’s global revenue but weren’t measuring up in overall sales growth and operating margins, the company said. “Both Horizon Organic and Wallaby are strong, much-loved brands with compelling growth opportunities. That said, seen through the lens of our Renew Strategy which requires us to stay disciplined in how we allocate our resources, they fall outside our priority growth areas of focus,” […]

When Private Equity Came for the Toddler Gyms

Children’s gym equipment at Teeter Tots Music n Motion in Frederick, Md.Lexey Swall for The New York Times The same playbook that has notched high returns acquiring things like foreclosed homes and highway rest stops is being tested by a family-oriented franchise. Tiffany Cianci spends most of her days in socks, padding around the fitness studio she operates in Frederick, Md., about an hour outside Washington. Her clients are young: kids ranging from 4 months to 12 years old. They come to learn somersaults, try the monkey bars, sing some songs. (“Little Red Caboose,” complete with a train whistle accompaniment, is one of her favorites.) Ms. Cianci, 41, spent the first part of her career as a sommelier, specializing in sake. In 2017, wanting to leave the hospitality industry for something that allowed her to spend more time at home, she and her husband bought their facility as part of a franchise chain called The Little Gym. Its slogan: “Serious fun.” They got what generations of franchise owners have gotten out of similar deals, with brands like McDonald’s or Jiffy Lube: a known brand name and detailed business plans in exchange for an initial fee and a cut of […]

How a Drug Company Made $114 Billion by Gaming the U.S. Patent System

How a Drug Company Made $114 Billion by Gaming the U.S. Patent System

In 2016, a blockbuster drug called Humira was poised to become a lot less valuable. The key patent on the best-selling anti-inflammatory medication, used to treat conditions like arthritis, was expiring at the end of the year. Regulators had blessed a rival version of the drug, and more copycats were close behind. The onset of competition seemed likely to push down the medication’s $50,000-a-year list price. Instead, the opposite happened. Through its savvy but legal exploitation of the U.S. patent system, Humira’s manufacturer, AbbVie, blocked competitors from entering the market. For the next six years, the drug’s price kept rising. Today, Humira is the most lucrative franchise in pharmaceutical history. Next week, the curtain is expected to come down on a monopoly that has generated $114 billion in revenue for AbbVie just since the end of 2016. The knockoff drug that regulators authorized more than six years ago, Amgen’s Amjevita, will come to market in the United States, and as many as nine more Humira competitors will follow this year from pharmaceutical giants including Pfizer. Prices are likely to tumble. The reason that it has taken so long to get to this point is a case study in how […]
