NC exec reported $25M in business expenses – feds say he spent it on luxury bling
A Fayetteville man accused of trying to dodge millions in income taxes has pleaded guilty to federal charges. Christopher Scott Harrison submitted the guilty plea Tuesday to willfully filing a false tax return with respect to nearly $25 million in unreported income he paid to himself from his company – a crime apparently uncovered by a bankruptcy accountant. Harrison is being represented by Ripley Eagles Rand with Womble Bond Dickinson. "Mr. Harrison has accepted full responsibility for the tax charge in this case, and he is continuing to cooperate in the investigation," Rand said in an email. Harrison faces up to three years in prison, restitution to the Internal Revenue Service and a potential fine when sentenced this spring. Prosecutors claim that his scheme involved disguising personal luxuries – such as a $145,000 Rolex watch and a $102,000 Cartier diamond necklace – as business expenses. “Wealthy tax cheats cannot be allowed to line their pockets at the expense of hardworking American taxpayers,” U.S. Attorney Mike Easley said in a prepared statement following the plea. Filings submitted to the court show Harrison, the former chief financial officer and majority owner of Ebenconcepts, an insurance and human resources benefits business in […]
‘Data-fication’ set to drive transformation in transport and logistics in 2023
As we look ahead to this year, it is from the position of continuous volatility that the past twelve months have brought. Transport and logistics companies, still in COVID recovery mode, face a raft of challenges as external factors combine to ensure that the road before us is anything but smooth. Both industries are experiencing a heady combination of disruption and transformation, with exciting innovations starting to deliver on their potential. We are already seeing the incredible potential of data-focused digital transformation to revolutionize how transport and logistics companies operate. Successful ‘data-fication’ will enable companies to absorb some of the shockwaves of ongoing disruption set to trouble the sector in the coming year and enable them to start to achieve the potential that digital transformation can bring. With all this in mind, what are the main trends that will shape the movement of people and things in the coming year? Here are five areas we expect to see advanced data use influencing transport and logistics companies in 2023: 1. Macroeconomic factors will accelerate the need for digital transformation in the logistics sector. Sustained high fuel costs will have the biggest impact on the logistics sector in 2023, exacerbating already […]

From Kimberly Koonce, Fleet Readiness Center East MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. – Two new programs at Fleet Readiness Center East are adding to the opportunities available for potential employees who want to gain work experience at the aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul facility while earning pay and benefits. Why the tween years are a ‘golden opportunity’ to set up the way you parent teenagers
Credit: Shutterstock The teenage years can be among the trickiest times for a parent. You have been used to being your child’s voice of reason. Then, all of a sudden, your authority is challenged by their peers, social media and huge developmental changes. But the good news is children aged ten to 12 are still more influenced by their parents than their friends. This makes it the ideal time for parents to establish parenting practices that will set the tone for when their child crosses over into adolescence. Our research In a recent study , colleagues and I looked at the perspectives, needs and behaviors of 2,600 Victorian parents. This was part of a study, run every three years, which aims to build a better understanding of parenting today. A key finding was parents of teenagers reported they were less confident about their parenting than parents of younger children. Parents of teenagers also reported greater levels of concern about their children’s behavior, including how to manage their child’s use of technology. Parents of teens were less likely to use positive discipline methods they had previously used such as praise and rewards for good behavior. They also said they felt […]
Danaher’s stock drop looks like a buying opportunity after it reported a solid quarter
Life sciences and medical diagnostics company Danaher (DHR) reported better-than-expected earnings and revenue for the fourth quarter. We view the dip in the stock as unjustified and an opportunity. Revenue increased nearly 10% on a core basis to $8.37 billion, well above estimates of $7.9 billion, according to Refinitiv. Adjusted profit increased 6.7% to $2.87 per share, exceeding the consensus estimate of $2.54 per share. When excluding the impact of declining Covid testing sales — but keeping in revenue from products that support vaccines and therapeutics — Danaher’s base business saw core growth of 7.5%. That shows the company isn’t overly reliant on the bump in pandemic sales. Bottom line This was a solid quarter from one of the best-run companies in the world. With very little to nitpick, we attribute Tuesday’s 3% stock decline to a combination of management already preannouncing the results and shares making a large move into the print. Also to blame: first-quarter guidance may be a tad light versus expectations. Given in-line to better-than-expected quarterly results pretty much across the board along with operating margin expansion and strong cash flow generation, we’re inclined to view Tuesday’s selloff as a buying opportunity as noted by […]

‘Great Resigners’ Report Shows Opportunity for Higher Ed
In 2021, people officially got fed up with work. The Great Resignation, spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic, economic conditions, and a long-simmering dissatisfaction, spread across the U.S., with over 47 million people quitting their jobs—23% of the workforce. A new report by the ed tech company Cengage Group shows that, one year later, the great resigners have a strong desire for reskilling and upskilling programs—an opportunity for higher ed. Michael Hansen, CEO of the Cengage Group “Colleges who offer flexible, shorter term and cost-effective ‘micro-credential’ opportunities will win out in today’s market,” said Cengage CEO Michael Hansen. “Colleges who offer courses tied to employer needs and at affordable costs will capitalize on the high demand and in turn help the workforce and economy make a comeback.” The report is based on a survey of 1,200 people over 25 who quit their job and found a new one between May 2021 and May 2022. Its results were clear: opportunities to advance are crucial. A higher percentage of respondents cited feeling “stuck” in their role as the primary reason for leaving their job than cited inadequate compensation. The number one reason that resigners chose new jobs was because the company had […]
