REUTERS/Johannes Hellstrom/File Photo STOCKHOLM, Jan 26 (Reuters) – Swedish industrials group Atlas Copco (ATCOa.ST) reported softer-than-expected fourth-quarter profits on Thursday and said demand was expected to remain around the current level, sending its share price down nearly 5%. Persistent supply chain challenges and higher costs have weighed on the maker of compressors, vacuum pumps and industrial tools in recent quarters. Its customers are also scaling back investments, especially within its key vacuum division which counts the major semiconductor producers as its main clients. Adjusted operating profit for Sweden’s most valuable listed company rose to 8.03 billion crowns ($782.9 million) from 6.46 billion a year earlier, while analysts polled by Refinitiv on average had expected earnings of 8.56 billion. In the fourth quarter, order intake at its vacuum business fell 22% to 8.48 billion crowns, once again denting results. On an organic basis, or like-for-like, orders at the vacuum division fell 33%, while for the group as a whole they declined 7%. Latest Updates Pareto Securities analyst Anders Roslund said the weaker result was entirely due to the drastic fall in orders and supply chain distortions in its vacuum […]
This Venture Capitalist Says Corporate Priorities Are Converging With His Business Model
Here’s an excerpt from this week’s CIO Newsletter. To get it to your inbox, sign up here . Venture Capitalist Mike Edelhart Courtesy of Mike Edelhart To kick off this week’s issue, I invited my old friend Mike Edelhart to share some insights from the front lines of venture capital. Mike is managing partner of Ataraxia, an early-stage fund focused on helping people live longer and live better, along with leading the Joyance Partners and Social Starts venture capital partnerships. Some of you may know him as the original Executive Editor of PC Magazine or as CEO at several startups, including Olive Software, Inman News, and Zinio. Here’s Mike: "Before I got into venture capital, when I still worked with big companies, the worlds of venture and corporate management stood well apart from one another. That’s no longer the case. Most large companies now invest in new ventures, often through their internal corporate venture capital (CVC) arm. If you’ve worked with CVCs–on the corporate side, as a partner or as a venture that’s received such funding–you probably already know that the record is mixed. There are a lot of reasons for this. Early-generation CVCs stuck close to their company […]

I want the opportunity to move up in my organization, but leadership is telling everyone that they need to return to the office full time. How can I grow in my career without sacrificing the benefits that come with remote working?
Q: People at my organization have been told that if they don’t come back to the office, they won’t be considered for a promotion. I don’t want to return to the office, but I do want to be considered for a promotion. A: One of many old management styles was that face time counted for everything, and you didn’t leave the office until after your boss left and you arrived before they did. People were promoted based on the amount of face time at work, both in the office and at work-related commitments and events outside of the office. What you’re trying to accomplish is the best of both worlds. Flexibility in your schedule, eliminating a commute, and still having the opportunity for a promotion. Your organization has delivered a corporate message. They didn’t say, "but if you outperform others or make amazing contributions, we’ll consider offering you a promotion”. So you can believe them and go to an organization who will promote hybrid or remote workers, or you can look for an internal manager who thinks they have the authority to promote someone not in the office. If you have a manager who is interested in seeing significant […]

Tech Layoffs Are An Opportunity To Build A Resilient Tech Team
Tech layoffs Getty Images In today’s fast-paced tech industry, layoffs have become an unfortunate reality. However, instead of viewing tech layoffs as a setback, companies can use them as an opportunity to build a resilient tech team. First, it is important to understand the reasons behind tech layoffs. As companies prepare for a potential recession and difficulties in raising capital, layoffs have become seen as a necessary measure. Last year, more than 107,000 jobs were cut from public and private tech companies in the US, with thousands more cut in January of this year alone. This includes companies such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Goldman Sachs, and Salesforce. Most tech talent is able to find a job quickly, since there’s still high demand for tech talent, according to a recent survey by the ManpowerGroup, but the demand is softening. The primary reason for the layoffs at the top tech firms and the softening demand for tech talent more broadly is a bearish market, where investors are becoming more conservative and unwilling to invest in high-risk ventures. Additionally, the primary market is down significantly, with fewer IPOs expected in the near future. However, as a highly experienced expert in the topic […]
EMEC floating wind demo site offers £690 million opportunity to UK
The economic potential of EMEC’s proposed 100 MW floating offshore wind test and demonstration site has been estimated at £690 million to UK economy. Courtesy of EMEC. The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), based in Orkney, Scotland, concluded concept design for a new floating offshore wind test and demonstration site in 2022 and is aiming to secure a lease for a 100 MW site ~20 km west of Orkney. EMEC’s proposed test site will comprise six individual berths and accommodate floating offshore wind turbines of up to 20 MW rated capacity. Four of the six berths will be grid-connected, while an additional two berths will be reserved for power-to-X applications. The site will offer floating wind developers the opportunity to prove performance and de-risk technologies in energetic metocean conditions, typical of ScotWind, Celtic Sea, Californian, and other commercially leased projects. Independent analysis by BiGGAR Economics calculates that the proposed demonstration site has the potential to generate £690 million gross value add (GVA) to the UK economy, £442 million of which will accrue in Scotland. BiGGAR’s economic impact analysis considers the full floating offshore wind value chain, from construction and development of the site through to operation and client demonstration […]

Coffee Correction Could Be a Buying Opportunity
Arabica coffee futures trade in the U.S. on the Intercontinental Exchange in the soft commodity sector of the raw materials asset class. Brazil is the world’s top producer and exporter of Arabica beans. Robusta coffee futures trade in Europe on the Intercontinental Exchange. Arabica beans have a smoother, sweeter taste, with hints of chocolate, sugar, and fruits or berries. Robusta beans are stronger and harsher, with more of a bitter taste. Robusta coffee has around twice the level of caffeine as the Arabica variety. Italian expressos use Robusta beans, while Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, and most other coffees are Arabica. After rising to the highest prices in over a decade in late 2021 and early 2022, Robusta and Arabica futures prices have corrected. Arabica correction In my Q4 report on soft commodities on Barchart , I highlighted that a 24.49% price decline in Q4 pushed Arabica futures 26.01% lower in 2022. Coffee was the worst-performing soft commodity last year. The chart highlights the decline from $2.6045 per pound in February 2022, an eleven-year high, to $1.4205 in January 2023. At just below the $1.62 level on January 25, coffee futures are sitting closer to the low than last year’s peak. […]
