Grace Young Wants to Keep Chinatown Restaurants in Business

Growing up in San Francisco, Grace Young watched her father shop daily in Chinatown for whatever he needed to make traditional Cantonese meals at home. “He would say, ‘Ah, I saw the delivery guy arrive with these cases of fresh baby bok choy so I got some,’ or ‘I saw the butcher carry a whole pig into the shop, so I followed him in and got a cut,’” she recalls. As an award-winning cookbook author and culinary historian, Ms. Young, 66, has spent decades shopping the same way in New York’s Chinatown, going to one store for meats, another for produce. When Ms. Young saw these familiar streets empty out at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, she sensed that a way of life she had taken for granted was suddenly under threat. Misinformation about Asian-Americans carrying the virus hit Chinese businesses especially hard. “Waiters were just standing around, businesses were losing up to 80% of their customers,” she recalls over a stir fry of cauliflower and snow pea shoots at the Mee Sum Café on Pell Street, amid the thrum of preparations for the Chinese New Year celebration, which runs through Feb. 5. “I realized I […]

Crypto mining advocate sees green business in abandoned gas wells

Dennis Porter, of Satoshi Action Fund. Photo illustration: Sarah Grillo/Axios. Photo: Mark Felix/Bloomberg via Getty Images A new advocate for bitcoin miners, Satoshi Action Fund, believes that securing the oldest cryptocurrency could be an effective way to finance a longstanding environmental problem in the United States: orphaned gas wells. Why it matters: The Environmental Defense Fund released a map in 2021 of 81,000 wells with no owner of record. While there are federal funds available to aid in sealing these wells, it’s still a daunting task. Dennis Porter, founder of the organization, is pushing policy for bitcoin miners to step in, use the last remaining gas to mine, and then seal the well and move on. Driving the news: On Wednesday, the organization made its first presentation in the halls of the U.S. Congress, in a Senate briefing room, to 30 to 40 people from around 10 congressional offices. In operation since June 2022, the nascent group has made presentations to state legislators across the country. What they’re saying: Porter’s message to legislators was: "Bitcoin mining is a business that doubles as a piece of grid infrastructure," he said in an interview. "It is particularly good at reducing methane […]

In 1977, Nike was at an inflection point. The company, still known at the time as Blue Ribbon Sports, was growing, but it had already been kicked out of two banks and it had yet to launch its industry-shaking Air sneakers. Michael Jordan was still playing high school basketball. Sales that year: $28.7 million. The company employed fewer than 1,000 people. It had yet to go public or become anything like the blue-chip, $46.7 billion, 79,000-employee colossus it is today. And most importantly: The federal government had just […]

Elon Musk made a much-awaited appearance at Tesla’s fourth quarter earnings call on Wednesday, after the closing bell. True to form, the CEO tweeted from the earnings call in real time, even as he doled out favorable stats on the current state of the company that sought to put to rest the notion that demand for Tesla’s cars is flagging: the January order rate is nearly twice the rate of production, Musk said, and the company expects to deliver 1.8 million vehicles by […]

Small businesses across Long Beach will soon be able to apply for grants to help offset costs incurred by the recent rise in property crimes and vandalism, city officials announced Friday. The city has allocated $350,000 from the Long Beach Recovery Act for the Visual Improvement Grant program. The $1,500 grants are available for local businesses that were affected by crime or vandalism on or after Oct. 1, 2022, and they can be used for storefront repairs, boarding costs, insurance deductibles and business operating expenses, according to the announcement. “Small businesses are a key component to a vibrant community” Economic Development Director Bo Martinez said in a statement. “This grant opportunity is one of several the City has provided over the last few years to help small businesses get through challenging times and start to thrive once again.” Across the city, property crime accounted for nearly 84% of all reported crime last year, according to Long Beach Police Department data. Property crime rose 7.6% last year compared to 2021, with 13,895 reports filed—an average […]

Boeing meets hiring goals at Renton factory with lots riding on 737 production

The Boeing Co.’s fortunes for the coming year will rely heavily on its ability to deliver jets from its 737 line in Renton. Boeing (NYSE: BA) plans to deliver at least 400 737s in 2023, along with high targets for its 787 line, despite supplier constraints on both lines that are restricting efforts to increase production. “Boeing’s fortunes right now are going to rely on continued growth at Global Services and improvements at Defense, but the upside is all going to be driven by Commercial,” Richard Safran , a senior aerospace equities analyst for Seaport Global Securities, said of the company’s three main business units. “If you’re investing in Boeing, the commercial story is what’s important.” The targets may well turn out to be “ambitious” but will be necessary if Boeing wants to hike its production rates to 40 or more by early 2024, said Ken Herbert , aerospace and defense analyst for RBC Capital Markets. The company has been exercising tools like readiness reviews to help suppliers meet their production targets. “There’s always going to be an element that’s going to be out of their control, but they’re doing a lot more to be proactive,” Herbert said. As […]

The idea of working for someone wasn’t in the cards

The idea of working for someone wasn’t in the cards

From building a solid spaghetti tower to a hip design firm, these three millennials are changing the paradigm. Jennifer Perez, Yaileen Obregon and Daniela Purrinos met in grad school. One of the first projects they worked on together was a team-building challenge in a Master of Architecture class at Florida International University. The task was to build a structure with uncooked spaghetti and the women laughed, had fun and dominated the competition. The experience became the basis for their friendship and, eventually, their growing Miami design business. Designing a new blueprint for success “None of us wanted to have a boss,” Perez says. This common goal and drive to become entrepreneurs was something that quickly bonded the trio. Nowhere along the way were they taught how to start or operate their own business. The school’s standard curriculum was geared toward helping graduates succeed at working for a firm, not starting one. But that didn’t stop these young entrepreneurs. From day one, they agreed that they didn’t want to follow the typical route the university designed for its grad students: an internship followed by employment at a studio or firm and perhaps eventually starting your own firm. “Starting our own […]

Squabbling Between Business Competitors Leads To UPEPA Motion In Washington State

Even pretty LED lights can lead to litigation. (Photo by Matt Hunt/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Torchstar Corporation sells LED products through Amazon AMZN +3% . Torchstar brought a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington alleging that a competing seller of the same products, Hyatech, Inc., had basically copied Torchstar’s Amazon sales pages in violation of copyright and other laws. For its part, Hyatech claimed that Torchstar’s sales pages did not qualify for copyright protection and that it was Torchstar that was trying to illegally destroy Hyatech as its competitor through the litigation process. Hyatech asserted a counterclaim against Torchstar claiming that Torchstar had made a false claim of copyright infringement to Amazon including asserting infringement resulting from product images taken by Hyatech’s own photographer. Hyatech also alleged that Torchstar did not register its copyrights with the U.S. Copyright Office until after the litigation commenced. So, to back up for a second, Torchstar sued Hyatech, and Hyatech countersued Torchstar. Nothing unusual to see here, welcome to commercial litigation. But now it gets interesting. Instead of fighting Hyatech’s claims on the merits, Torchstar instead filed a special motion to strike under Washington’s Uniform Public Expression […]
