FRCE Offers Internship Opportunities to Trade and Engineering Students, Separating Service Members

From Kimberly Koonce, Fleet Readiness Center East MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. – Two new programs at Fleet Readiness Center East are adding to the opportunities available for potential employees who want to gain work experience at the aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul facility while earning pay and benefits. FRCE has expanded its Pathways Internship Program to offer a fast track toward employment as a journey-level mechanic to students pursuing technical degrees at local community colleges. The depot also recently signed on to participate in the Department of Defense (DoD) SkillBridge program, which is designed to give separating service members an opportunity to try out civilian sector jobs before leaving the military. These two programs are in addition to the Pathways and other internships that have been used successfully at FRCE to provide a foot in the door to students enrolled in accredited engineering and architecture programs. Training specialists at FRCE said these internship programs provide the depot access to trained, committed employees, while giving applicants an opportunity to use their skills and education to begin a challenging, well-paying career in a technical field. “These programs give us an ability to look at our future workforce, and […]

Why the tween years are a 'golden opportunity' to set up the way you parent teenagers

Why the tween years are a ‘golden opportunity’ to set up the way you parent teenagers

Credit: Shutterstock The teenage years can be among the trickiest times for a parent. You have been used to being your child’s voice of reason. Then, all of a sudden, your authority is challenged by their peers, social media and huge developmental changes. But the good news is children aged ten to 12 are still more influenced by their parents than their friends. This makes it the ideal time for parents to establish parenting practices that will set the tone for when their child crosses over into adolescence. Our research In a recent study , colleagues and I looked at the perspectives, needs and behaviors of 2,600 Victorian parents. This was part of a study, run every three years, which aims to build a better understanding of parenting today. A key finding was parents of teenagers reported they were less confident about their parenting than parents of younger children. Parents of teenagers also reported greater levels of concern about their children’s behavior, including how to manage their child’s use of technology. Parents of teens were less likely to use positive discipline methods they had previously used such as praise and rewards for good behavior. They also said they felt […]

Danaher’s stock drop looks like a buying opportunity after it reported a solid quarter

Danaher’s stock drop looks like a buying opportunity after it reported a solid quarter

Life sciences and medical diagnostics company Danaher (DHR) reported better-than-expected earnings and revenue for the fourth quarter. We view the dip in the stock as unjustified and an opportunity. Revenue increased nearly 10% on a core basis to $8.37 billion, well above estimates of $7.9 billion, according to Refinitiv. Adjusted profit increased 6.7% to $2.87 per share, exceeding the consensus estimate of $2.54 per share. When excluding the impact of declining Covid testing sales — but keeping in revenue from products that support vaccines and therapeutics — Danaher’s base business saw core growth of 7.5%. That shows the company isn’t overly reliant on the bump in pandemic sales. Bottom line This was a solid quarter from one of the best-run companies in the world. With very little to nitpick, we attribute Tuesday’s 3% stock decline to a combination of management already preannouncing the results and shares making a large move into the print. Also to blame: first-quarter guidance may be a tad light versus expectations. Given in-line to better-than-expected quarterly results pretty much across the board along with operating margin expansion and strong cash flow generation, we’re inclined to view Tuesday’s selloff as a buying opportunity as noted by […]

‘Great Resigners’ Report Shows Opportunity for Higher Ed

‘Great Resigners’ Report Shows Opportunity for Higher Ed

In 2021, people officially got fed up with work. The Great Resignation, spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic, economic conditions, and a long-simmering dissatisfaction, spread across the U.S., with over 47 million people quitting their jobs—23% of the workforce. A new report by the ed tech company Cengage Group shows that, one year later, the great resigners have a strong desire for reskilling and upskilling programs—an opportunity for higher ed. Michael Hansen, CEO of the Cengage Group “Colleges who offer flexible, shorter term and cost-effective ‘micro-credential’ opportunities will win out in today’s market,” said Cengage CEO Michael Hansen. “Colleges who offer courses tied to employer needs and at affordable costs will capitalize on the high demand and in turn help the workforce and economy make a comeback.” The report is based on a survey of 1,200 people over 25 who quit their job and found a new one between May 2021 and May 2022. Its results were clear: opportunities to advance are crucial. A higher percentage of respondents cited feeling “stuck” in their role as the primary reason for leaving their job than cited inadequate compensation. The number one reason that resigners chose new jobs was because the company had […]

Reading farmer, enamored with plowing contest, has opportunity to compete at nationals

Rod Burkard stands with the Case VAC tractor and antique plow he used to win first place in the Minnesota Plowing Organization’s state contest in August 2022. READING — Rod Burkard’s 1945 Case Centennial moldboard 2-bottom, 14-inch plow sits out behind his shop, buried in a snow drift on a crisp January afternoon, but last August, the piece of antique farm machinery propelled Burkard to first place in the Minnesota Plowing Organization’s annual plowing contest near Greenwald. To say he was shocked by the results would be accurate. It was Burkard’s second year competing in the state plowing contest, and the first year was very much a learning opportunity. His 3-bottom, 18-inch moldboard plow was simply too big to create perfectly plowed rows in the eyes of the judges, and his tractor wasn’t really suitable either. Rod Burkard, of rural Reading, holds the trophy he received from the Minnesota Plowing Organization’s 2022 contest. Behind him is the Case VAC tractor he drove in the competition. Despite the use of less-than-ideal equipment, Burkard ended up with a second place finish at the contest — held that year in Lake Wilson — because three of the competitors in his division couldn’t […]

Microsoft's Q2 Earnings Create Opportunity

Microsoft’s Q2 Earnings Create Opportunity

SAUL LOEB/AFP via Getty Images Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT ) announced its Q2 earnings on Tuesday and initially the stock popped 5% as the company’s cloud business was particularly strong. However, Microsoft gave guidance during the conference call and shortly after announcing Q3 revenue guidance shares of Microsoft did a U-turn. Microsoft Q3 Revenue Guidance Productivity and Business Processes: $16.9B – $17.2B Intelligent Cloud: $21.7B – $22B Personal Computing: $11.9 – $12.3B Revenue Guidance Totals: $50.5B – $51.5B Source: Microsoft Q3 Outlook Slides Q3 Wall Street estimates for Microsoft ranged from $51.25B on the low end to $57.33B on the high end – with a consensus of $52.67B (6.7% growth) for the upcoming quarter. Keep in mind, the $52.67B Q3 consensus has steadily been revised down by analysts over the past six months, meaning Microsoft’s revenue bar was already lowered – and the company is guiding underneath it. As a long term focused investor, I’m not overly concerned about the next few quarters where it appears Microsoft will miss the mark from a revenue perspective. However, start stretching Microsoft’s revenue estimates out into fiscal Q1 (September 2023) and beyond, Wall Street is expecting revenue growth to reaccelerate back into the […]
