CBI: £4.3bn opportunity to be squandered by UK’s ‘complacency’ on green technologies

Danker delivered his first public speech of 2023 on Monday (23 January) at the University College London. The speech reflected on the economic growth approaches of the three Conservative Prime Ministers the UK has seen within a 12-month period and saw Danker arguing that, while incumbent Rishi Sunak should “comfortably” hit his pledge to grow the economy by 0.1% by the end of 2023 , growth could be limited to this level unless he and his Cabinet set their sights higher. Danker argued that a key lever for delivering growth beyond this level, despite economic headwinds, will be innovation in the fields needed to deliver the UK’s legally binding 2050 net-zero target. He emphasised how, given that net-zero targets from nations and regions now cover 91% of global GDP, the UK is in a global cleantech race that it is not winning. He said he is “worried” about the UK’s “complacency on green technologies” and found Chris Skidmore’s recent Net-Zero Review “devastating” . The review pointed out more than 120 interventions that the UK Government would need to make to deliver a ‘pro-business, pro-growth’ transition to net-zero, concluding that there is still time to seize this opportunity but that […]

More layoffs are on the way, survey of business economists finds

New York CNN — For the first time since the early days of the pandemic, most business economists expect their companies to cut payrolls in the coming months , according to a new survey released Monday. Just 12% of economists surveyed by the National Association for Business Economics (NABE) anticipate employment will increase at their firms over the next three months, down from 22% this fall. The share of economists expecting payrolls will decline at their companies ticked up to 19%, according to the survey, which was conducted January 4 to January 11. NABE said this is the first time since 2020 that more respondents anticipate shrinking, rather than growing, employment at their firms. The findings indicate “widespread concern about entering a recession this year,” Julia Coronado, president of NABE and president of MacroPolicy Perspectives, said in the report. The survey found that slightly more than half of the business economists who responded peg the risk of a recession over the next year at 50% or higher, with the biggest risks including higher interest rates and costs. A flurry of layoffs have hit the economy in recent weeks, including ones announced on Monday by Spotify and Rubbermaid parent Newell […]

The Central Business District (CBD) skyline is pictured at sunset in Sydney, Australia, June 4, 2021. REUTERS/Loren Elliott SYDNEY, Jan 24 (Reuters) – Australian businesses conditions moderated for a third straight month in December, while price pressures began to ease, pointing to a likely peak in inflation, according to a business survey issued on Tuesday. The results may reduce pressure on the Reserve Bank of Australia to increase interest rates at its next policy-setting meeting, on Jan. 31. The survey from National Australia Bank Ltd (NAB) (NAB.AX) showed its index of business conditions had fallen 8 points to +12 in December, although it remained still well above its long-run average. The measure of confidence, on the other hand, improved 3 points to -1, remaining in negative territory for a second straight month. "Overall, the survey continues to point to a healthy level of activity with above average conditions and elevated capacity utilisation but a slowing in momentum with most indicators pulling back over the past three months or so," NAB said in a statement. "With confidence still in negative territory and well below average, and forward orders moderating further in the month, there are signs that conditions may ease […]

Photographer: Al Drago/Bloomberg Business openings reached an all-time high in the US last year, with the vast majority of states exceeding pre-pandemic levels, according to Yelp Inc. data. About 637,590 businesses opened on Yelp’s online platform in 2022, compared with 566,836 in 2019. In particular, the number of new businesses catering to homeowners and offering local services soared. But openings of dining, shopping and nightlife establishments — the most hard-hit by the pandemic — continue to remain below pre-Covid levels. The figures add to evidence that the boom in entrepreneurship spawned by the pandemic may be long-lasting . They also show how local economies have rebounded, with big cities seeing a burst in new hotels and beauty businesses. The recovery has been uneven, however. A handful of states are below pre-pandemic levels in terms of growth in openings on Yelp. They include New York and California, two states that have seen their populations decline during the Covid-19 crisis. States that have not surpass pre-pandemic levels of new business growth
