Cybercrime is an ever-growing issue across virtually every industry. Expected to have a global cost as much as US$10trn by 2025 , companies must fight to combat malicious actors seeking to gain from cyber attacks against them. Threat actors increasingly use multiple threat vectors during attacks to overwhelm companies and make it easier for them to gain access to their network. This is makes it more important than ever to safeguard the most common vehicle for an initial breach point – email. The majority of hacking groups (65 percent) utilize email-based spear phishing campaigns as their primary attack vector. This cyber attack method targets specific individuals within an organization with the goal of compromising their credentials and using their privileged access to gain further control of a business’ network or steal information that only certain employees have access too. AstraZeneca CEO says UK business climate deters investment

LONDON, Feb 9 (Reuters) – Britain’s business climate is deterring biopharma companies from investing in the country, AstraZeneca (AZN.L) chief Pascal Soriot said on Thursday, highlighting his company’s decision to shift plans for a new manufacturing plant to Ireland. The UK government’s ambition to become a life sciences "superpower" has been hampered by a discouraging tax environment, Soriot said, acknowledging the country was grappling with an "explosion of costs" driven by the impact of the COVID-19 on the healthcare system. While Britain is already considered a research powerhouse it is also lacking in other areas such as manufacturing incentives, and access to green energy, he said during a news conference after the company’s results. Without those elements, he added, companies will seek to develop drugs in other markets "where you know you’re going to get access and you’re going to get a price that can justify the investment". The British drugmaker seeks to offset declining sales of COVID-19 medicines with its cancer, metabolic and rare disease drugs and Soriot said it is on track to deliver at least 15 new medicines this decade. He highlighted AstraZeneca’s recent decision to build a manufacturing facility in Ireland instead of the UK […]

Wondering How To Grow Your Business? It’s A Lot Like Building With LEGOS

getty When you’re both the CEO of a company and a father, the two worlds can sometimes collide, regardless of how hard you try to avoid it. Fortunately, there are some instances where that collision can be beneficial. I was recently in a situation in which I was explaining my belief about the best approach to building a company. My mind didn’t focus on business theory or trends; it wasn’t grasping at sports, war or movie metaphors, to name a tired few. Instead, I couldn’t stop thinking about toys—specifically, the timeless, infinite and inventive nature of LEGO bricks. There is something about those ubiquitous little bricks that inspires a logical, structured form of creativity in people of all ages. In some way, shape or form, all of the pieces fit with each other to transform ideas and creative instincts into something unique. From my perspective, understanding the beauty and benefits of LEGO provides a relevant framework for building and expanding a business in ways that are both responsible and innovative. Start with the basic building blocks. LEGO bricks are an intrinsically wonderful tool for building—and, by extension, an analog for expanding and trying new things at a company—because they […]

Here’s how Gov. Lamont’s $50.5B budget impacts business taxes, credits

Gov. Ned Lamont addresses a joint session of the Connecticut House and Senate as he presents his budget proposal for 2023-2024. Gov. Ned Lamont’s two-year, $50.5 billion budget includes a number of changes to business taxes and tax credits. While the Democratic governor’s budget includes more than $500 million in tax cuts , not all businesses will see relief. Before his budget reveal Wednesday, Lamont announced plans to pare back the pass-through entity tax, a levy created in 2018 to help business owners work around a new $10,000 cap on state and local tax deductions within the federal income tax system. This would save about 123,000 small and mid-sized businesses, collectively, as much as $60 million annually starting in 2024. Lamont also hinted in December that he would allow the state’s corporation tax surcharge, which was supposed to expire this year, to sunset. However, his budget released on Wednesday keeps the surcharge in place until 2025, costing C-corp companies $130 million over two years. Other tax changes in the governor’s proposal include: Boosting from 5% to 10% the business tax credit that encourages companies to invest in human capital, such as sponsoring new work education and training programs. The […]

Helen Zad , Administrator of Active Plus Home Health and Divine Grace Hospice, and Host of Femme Fatale by Helen Podcast. getty While no two paths to success will look alike, I believe there are some foundational elements that any successful business will have in common. Here are my three non-negotiable starting principles that I always employ with my business ventures that I hope can help you maximize your own potential. 1. Write a detailed business plan. Your business plan is your springboard when you’re starting to build. And while you may need to adjust it as you go, your plan from day one should be complete and as detailed as possible. How does it meet a need? Include extensive market research—you should know the field and your competitors inside and out. • Passion: You need to strongly believe in your product. Why do you want to produce this? […]
