A nuclear guide to digital transformation for produce industry

A nuclear guide to digital transformation for produce industry

An example of an InteliView dashboard. (photos courtesy Inteligistics) Technology use in the produce industry increases every year, but it hasn’t yet made a digital transformation like some industries. Rao Mandava, chairman and president of Inteligistics, hopes to help lead this transformation. The company sells supply chain technology, and its clients include Driscoll’s, Del Monte, Dole, Church Brothers, Fresh Express, Taylor Farms and Walmart. Rao Mandava “I want to bring technology from the industries I’ve worked in, to the produce industry,” he said. Those two industries are nuclear energy and airlines, and he thinks produce can learn from these examples. Before he started Inteligistics, Mandava used his mechanical engineering background first at Boeing and then at Westinghouse, where he managed a group that transformed the nuclear control room from analog to digital. He said after it was done, the cost to operate a nuclear power plant dropped by two-thirds. “It used little internet and no cloud, so we created our own network and artificial intelligence,” Mandava says. “We went from using over 10,000 cables to using about 100.” He didn’t start a technology company specializing in fresh produce by chance. He was born into a farming family in India […]

Batteries Plus: Customer Data and Store Expertise Power Sweeping Digital Transformation

Batteries Plus: Customer Data and Store Expertise Power Sweeping Digital Transformation

When the first Batteries Plus opened in 1988 in Green Bay, Wis. it was a groundbreaking retail concept, in many ways heralding a new era of personal computing and electronics. Cell phones had just entered the scene, the internet was in its early days and daily tasks were quickly being overtaken by newfangled portable devices like boom boxes, cordless phones and camcorders. One of the first Batteries Plus stores. But that same wave of electronic innovation that gave rise to Batteries Plus also put a drain on the retailer’s business as ecommerce began to take hold. Over the last decade or so, Batteries Plus has struggled to find its place in the world of digital retail, even as consumers have become ever more reliant on battery-powered devices. The company rebranded as Batteries Plus Bulbs in 2012 in an attempt to expand its appeal but then reverted back to just Batteries Plus in 2021 (although it does still sell light bulbs). In a sense Batteries Plus’ biggest challenge is the fact that is has no direct competitor — no other retailer does all the things Batteries Plus does, so its value proposition is somewhat opaque to consumers who have nothing […]

New Treasury Report Assesses Opportunities, Challenges Facing Financial Sector Cloud-Based Technology Adoption

New Treasury Report Assesses Opportunities, Challenges Facing Financial Sector Cloud-Based Technology Adoption

February 8, 2023 Treasury launches interagency Cloud Services Steering Committee to bolster regulatory and private sector cooperation WASHINGTON—The U.S. Department of the Treasury today released a report on the potential benefits and challenges associated with the increasing trend of financial sector firms adopting cloud services technology. While cloud services can increase access and reliability for local communities as well as empower community banks to compete with financial technology firms, the report found that financial service firms ramping up their reliance on cloud-based technologies need more visibility, staff support, and cybersecurity incident response engagement from Cloud Service Providers (CSPs). The report also recommends further evaluation from Treasury and the broader financial regulatory community to continue to determine the financial risks associated with a limited number of providers offering cloud services. The first-of-its-kind report is the product of months of work in coordination with members of the Financial and Banking Information Infrastructure Committee (FBIIC) and was developed with extensive input from U.S. regulators, private sector stakeholders, trade associations, and think tanks. The report does not impose any requirements and does not endorse or discourage the use of any specific provider or cloud services. “There is no question that providing consumers with […]

Advancing access to education, opportunity across Latino community earns Super Bowl honor

Advancing access to education, opportunity across Latino community earns Super Bowl honor

ASU Executive Vice President Maria Anguiano recognized with 2023 Community Empowerment Award Many students take a quick bus ride to school, but when Maria Anguiano was growing up in Mexico, she commuted across the U.S. border every day. As a child, it was ingrained in her that no opportunity was too far out of reach. Access to education was something she and her family worked hard for as eventual U.S. immigrants. This tenacity carried over into her experiences as a first-generation college student at Claremont McKenna College, where she found a way to succeed in an environment that was not designed for students from backgrounds like hers. When she entered the workforce, Anguiano vowed to change the game for learners like her and her sister. In her role as executive vice president of ASU and head of ASU’s Learning Enterprise , she is living out this promise. “Instead of always asking students to come to us — we must find options to go to them,” she says. Removing the burden of access from the learner is the constant premise driving her work. Award-winning community impact On Feb. 8, Anguiano received the 2023 Community Empowerment Award , presented by Inca […]

Leading to Execute: Mielle Organics’ Monique Rodriguez

On this episode, Monique Rodriguez, CEO and founder of Mielle Organics, shares how she turned her passion for women’s health into the fastest-growing Black-owned natural hair care brand in the world. Carla sits down with Monique to discuss how she’s leading to execute after securing a historic investment deal with Berkshire Partners. An extreme funding gap exists for Black female entrepreneurs who, in 2021, received merely 0.34% of the total venture capital spent in the U.S. in the first half of the year, according to Crunchbase. And while more concerted efforts to diversify capital allocation have come out of these jarring figures, the community of adequately funded Black female founders remains incredibly small. On this episode, we speak with one of the select few Black female founders who got her funding. In 2021, Monique Rodriguez, founder and CEO of Mielle Organics, broke the glass ceiling for Black female founders, inking a nine-figure, non-controlling investment deal with Berkshire Partners. She shares how she turned her passion for women’s health and a nursing background into a global beauty business, and discusses how her atypical path to entrepreneurship became her biggest asset. Then, host Carla Harris sits down with Monique to discuss […]

Hybrid Learning Connects More Students With Opportunity

Hybrid Learning Connects More Students With Opportunity

COVID-19 pushed higher education online almost overnight. The field transformed itself, troubleshooting on the go to make sure students could succeed while quarantining at home. Federal funding was heavily invested in resources that connected students with technology and high-speed internet. As the pandemic has begun to taper, many institutions are transitioning back to fully-in-person education—but not all. Dr. Jessica Davis-Ganao, associate professor and chair of the criminal justice program at North Carolina Central University. The 22 colleges and 88 campuses within the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG), and four-year North Carolina Central University (NCCU) have continued to embrace technology as a tool to improve and expand educational opportunities, especially for nontraditional students, through the creation of hyflex or hybrid courses. These programs offer their students options to attend class in person, online, or asynchronously. TCSG and NCCU representatives say this flexibility has made their students happier and increased equitable access to higher education, critical in a time of decreasing college enrollment numbers. To better understand shrinking enrollment, Dr. Jessica Davis-Ganao had conversations with students about what might be preventing them from enrolling or persisting. Davis-Ganao is an associate professor and chair of the criminal justice program at NCCU, […]
