Second is the transition to a low-carbon economy. And third is the first truly scaled deployment of AI in the enterprise. And across these opportunities and challenges, a few key technology trends are clearly taking shape: 1. Enterprises are moving from data-poor to data-rich 2. Transformation efforts will shift from big data to big AI 3. Digital transformation becomes 80% people, 20% tech Large Language Models (LLMs), Data-rich enterprises, and a focus on the human centered digital … [+] getty 1. Moving from data-poor to data-rich enterprises Enterprises are shedding their legacy of being data-poor and becoming data-rich companies using data to fundamentally drive their businesses. Two reasons have primarily driven this – data as a new asset class and new AI capabilities that make data more usable. Data has emerged as the top driver of transformational value. As a result, we increasingly view data as its own asset class, as opposed to a byproduct and part of automation. It’s no surprise why. For example, in travel, airlines that provide a single […]

Experts hail digital economy opportunity
Importance of ICT for Digital Economy During a webinar hosted in Huawei’s Win Win Live extended reality studio, Simon Baptist, Global Chief Economist of EIU set the scene regarding the status of the digital economy, but argued that in fact it was a “bit of a misnomer” in some ways – the digital economy was no longer a separate phenomenon from the actual economy. Baptist explained digital really underlines every activity happening today, and any company not pursuing a digital play would eventually have to. Going further, Baptist believes digital has moved beyond simple transformation for companies, and is increasingly leading the agenda for governments. “In the era of the last 50 years, a lot of growth was driven by urbanization and by moving up the manufacturing value chain. Growth in the next 50 years is going to come from productivity growth that comes from the digital sector.” Pau Castells, Head of Economic Analysis at GSMA Intelligence, concurred on the importance of living in digitised societies, particularly at a time when there is an economic crisis, stagnant growth, spiralling inflation, all of which is on the back of a global pandemic. He explained GSMA Intelligence has looked into the […]

STEM education in Africa: Risk and opportunity
Editor’s Note: Below is a viewpoint from the Foresight Africa 2023 report, which explores top priorities for the region in the coming year. Read the full chapter on education and skills . “It is within the possibility of science and technology to make even the Sahara bloom into a vast field with verdant vegetation for agricultural and industrial developments.” Former President of Ghana Kwame Nkrumah’s statement above on the promise of science and technology is as pertinent today as it was in 1963. It is indeed breakthroughs in science and technology, driven by a workforce skilled in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), that will enable Africa to overcome crippling development challenges including climate change, food insecurity, inequality, and poverty. And the one-fifth of the global population under the age of 25 who currently reside in sub-Saharan Africa will need STEM skills to drive economic transformation and competitiveness. STEM education inculcates problem-solving, critical-thinking, communications, collaboration, and digital skills. Young people need these skills to build the resilience to navigate an uncertain future where technological advances will fundamentally alter industries and eliminate about one-half of the jobs today. The STEM education landscape in Africa is characterized by risk and opportunity. […]

Nearshoring, an opportunity for companies in Mexico
[co-author: Mariana Ávila, and Juan Pablo Vázquez] As a result of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (“UMSCA”) over the next years, incentives for nearshoring to Mexico will remain high for companies doing business in the U.S. and Canadian market, among others. Thus, companies in Mexico must have a labor, social security, and ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) environment that does not generate risks. As a result of the “UMSCA” and the provisions issued by the International Labor Organization (ILO); the Federal Labor Law (“FLL”) has needed to adapt to these changes. In addition, following the COVID-19 pandemic, the phenomenon of Nearshoring has increased. Nearshoring is the strategy whereby a company transfers part of its production to third parties that, despite being located in other countries, are located in nearby destinations with a similar time zone. Nearshoring in Mexico has impacted the FLL and compliance on ESG matters in a number of ways. Some of the most significant impacts include: Changes to labor regulations: Mexico has made significant changes to its labor regulations in recent years in an effort to attract nearshoring investments from foreign companies. These changes have included simplifying the hiring process and increasing flexibility for employers. In ESG […]
