The three-pronged transformation strategy driving innovation at PPG

The three-pronged transformation strategy driving innovation at PPG

CIO Bhaskar Ramachandran speaks with Martha Heller, CEO of Heller Search, on how IT is reducing technical debt and sparking growth at the $18 billion paint, coatings, and specialty materials supplier. Credit: PPG As CIOs know, a highly acquisitive company will reach an inflection point when years of technology proliferation begin to stymie future growth. For this reason, paying down technical debt while innovating and supporting growth is one of the greatest challenges for the modern CIO. Bhaskar Ramachandran, CIO of PPG, which provides specialty paints to a large network of body shops and retail outlets, details how the company uses a platform, consolidation, and cloud-only approach to modernization. Why is there a need for transformation at PPG? We’re a 142-year-old company that has paid dividends for 125 years; Wall Street calls us a dividend aristocrat. We have a lot of pride in our legacy, but it’s resulted in some technical debt. Over the last 20 years, we’ve completed over 60 acquisitions and divestitures, which have been very good for our growth, but that’s also left us with more technical complexity. For example, with several dozen ERPs and general ledgers, and no enterprise-wide, standard process definitions of things as […]

Transitioning to a Dynamic Data Hub: The Future of CX

Transitioning to a Dynamic Data Hub: The Future of CX

Unlocking data-driven customer (and digital customer) insights 6 Data & Analytics Published: August 28, 2024 Every organization knows that data is the key to delivering excellent experiences to customers, and the same applies to digital customers. The Internet of Things (IoT) has created a connection between objects and people through digital mediums, transforming household appliances into ‘smart devices’. The same underlying technology has now entered the customer and citizen engagement spaces. Digital customers, or machine customers, are connected devices that act on behalf of consumers and organizations to provide key insights without the need for human intervention. Gartner has estimated that, conservatively, at least 15 billion connected IoT products will have the potential to behave as digital customers within the next two years. Digital customers digital pose new challenges to delivering customer experiences, but also new opportunities for revenue generation, as they allow businesses to leverage data from a much broader range of sources than previously available. This means that, as well as focusing on great experiences for your customers, you need to focus on their devices- or digital customers. As digital customers become more prevalent within the contact center space, is it time for brands to look to […]

Making data work

Making data work

Martin Penney, Lloyd’s Register OneOcean CEO Martin Penney is fundamentally a problem solver. When considering his career options, he saw in himself a desire to “understand a problem and solve it”, which led him to study Manufacturing Engineering at Cambridge University. This took him to various work placements at British Aerospace, Rolls-Royce and Ford Motor Company, amongst others, facilitating a real understanding of how business operates very early on in his career. “I started working as a strategy consultant, taking that knowledge of how to run a business and sharing it with growing businesses around Europe,” says Penney, who has been CEO of LR OneOcean since February this year. This was around the time of the .com boom and Penney said the transition from analogue to internet in the 2000s was very similar to the AI transition of today. “The internet itself didn’t solve anything and AI is the same. It’s what you actually do with the data that makes a difference. We helped companies understand the impact the internet could have on their markets and business models. This enabled them to create advantages to drive faster growth and become more efficient. AI is in a similar situation now. […]

Elia Group develops future-proof technology to steer decarbonization

Elia Group develops future-proof technology to steer decarbonization

With a software to collect suppliers’ carbon footprint data, the Elia Group created an all-in-one solution from scratch to enhance sustainability and detect other environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risks. Credit: iStock The transmission system operator Elia Group views itself as a driver of successful energy transition and an agent of change. However, in terms of in-house technology, the Belgian company’s carbon footprint data used to be stored on spreadsheets, while quality control was performed manually, limiting the Elia Group’s ability to calculate the Scope 3 upstream emissions released for all their assets. With the world moving in a greener direction and finding no satisfactory software on the current market to satisfy their needs, Elia Group decided to build its own platform to collect Scope 3 upstream emissions data directly from suppliers. This future-proof platform therefore aims to obtain more accurate figures in terms of carbon footprint for reporting and to identify the best levers to act on. A digitized environment One of the purposes of developing its own software was to set Elia Group’s own GHG collection templates and LCAs. The ambition with this platform was also to allow the users to integrate CO2-related data into everyday business […]

This trend reflects a growing industry-wide commitment to developing durable, integrated cloud environments that meet the evolving needs of modern enterprises. TheCUBE’s Dave Vellante talks about VMware private cloud. “This is IT, sustainability, the data modeling, developer pipelining, not just stacking up the gear. It’s not trivial,” said John Furrier (pictured, left), executive analyst at theCUBE Research. “I think hybrid is the formula, but they’re not wrong — private cloud needs to be there.” Furrier spoke with theCUBE Research’s Rob Strechay (center), principal analyst, and Dave Vellante (right), chief analyst, at VMware […]
