British Government complacent about growth opportunity of creative industries and is ignoring digital impact

With the economy in flux and a recession looming, it’s surprising to see evidence that the current British Government is missing opportunities to harness sectors of the UK economy that have a proven track record in delivering growth. For example, the creative industries (which has a strong intersection with technological development) was worth more than £115 billion to the UK economy before the pandemic, making up as many as one in eight businesses across the country – and yet, according to a new report by the House of Lords Communications Committee, is largely being ignored by the current administration in charge. To put this into context, the UK’s creative industries, which includes everything from visual arts to software, marketing and design, in 2019 contributed more to the economy than aerospace, life sciences and automotive industries combined. Not only this, but the Committee’s report highlights how the government is seemingly failing to understand how the advancement of digital technologies could impact the creative industries in the near future – and is not putting in place regulatory frameworks to protect them. The report argues that if the UK’s creative industries are not put at the heart of the government’s future growth […]

India represents a trillion-dollar digital opportunity around the Internet: Bessemer Venture Partners

India sees meteoric rise in e-commerce businesses, online payments through UPI | Photo Credit: Wpadington Internet penetration continues to climb at approximately 59 per cent, and as the number grows and consumer behaviour and shopping patterns continue to shift online, India represents a trillion-dollar digital opportunity that will lead consumption in this coming decade, according to a report by Bessemer Venture Partners. The country has seen a meteoric rise in e-commerce businesses, online payments through the unified payments infrastructure (UPI), and the maturation of supply chain and logistics technologies, the report added. According to the report by 2030, the number of users will increase from 125 million to 500 million, and the average digital spend per person will increase from $750 to $2,000. At present, about 125 million Indians, or less than 10 per cent of the total population, and less than 20 per cent of the Internet population, transact online. The study states two major aspects of the region set the stage for increased traction among internet marketplaces: fragmentation and offline operations challenges. Moreover, the marketplaces have evolved from horizontal listing — connection platforms where sellers list their products and services and consumers find suppliers of different goods […]

1 Compelling Investment Opportunity Dividend Investors Won’t Want to Miss

The company projects to deliver powerful dividend growth for the next several years. Many dividend investors focus on a stock’s yield. However, the data points to an even more important factor: A company’s ability to increase its payout. Over the last 50 years, dividend growers have vastly outperformed companies with no change in their dividend policy (10.7% annualized total return vs. 7.1%), according to a study by Ned Davis Research and Hartford Funds. Many companies pay attractive and growing dividends. However, one stands out for its combination of having an above-average dividend yield and superior dividend growth prospects: NextEra Energy Partners ( NEP 0.08%). Dividend investors will want to consider adding it to their portfolios. A compelling value proposition Image source: NextEra Energy Partners Investor Relations Presentation. As that slide shows, it’s one of only 186 companies in the S&P 1000 with a market cap above $5 billion. That gives it a decent size. Larger companies can benefit from scale advantages. However, it’s typically more challenging for larger companies to grow rapidly. Of that group, NextEra Energy Partners is one of 54 that offers a dividend yield above 2.25% (which is higher than the average of the broader market […]

Net-zero is ‘economic opportunity of 21st century’ for UK, says Skidmore review

Net-zero is ‘economic opportunity of 21st century’ for UK, says Skidmore review

Net-zero is “the economic opportunity of the 21st century”, according to an independent review commissioned by the UK government. Undertaken by the Conservative former energy minister Chris Skidmore, the “ mission zero ” report includes 129 recommendations to “turbocharge” the nation’s climate action. More than half of them have a deadline of this year. The proposals include a “solar and onshore wind revolution”, an earlier ban on the sale of new gas boilers and new targets for electric-car sales imposed on manufacturers. The report contains frank criticism of the UK government, which it says is “not matching world-leading ambition with world-leading delivery”. It adds that inconsistent policymaking has led to missed opportunities for businesses. The average household stands to save up to £6,000 by 2050 if current net-zero policies are implemented, according to new analysis conducted for the review. More ambitious policies could make these savings even higher – as much as £14,000 in total. This pushes back against net-zero sceptics in the Conservative party and certain sections of the media. They have sought to portray the target as a financial burden on ordinary people and a contributor to the current energy crisis, which has, in fact, been caused […]

USDOT Announces Two New Actions to Advance Economic Opportunity for Disadvantaged Workers and Businesses through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) today announced new resources from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that will create economic opportunities and open the door to building generational wealth for disadvantaged entrepreneurs and workers in communities across the country. These resources are: New guidance to support State investment in workforce development, training and education in order to meet the demand generated by President Biden’s investment in rebuilding our infrastructure, and $10 million to support small businesses owned by minorities, women, and other socially and economically disadvantaged individuals, through FHWA’s Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Supportive Services Funding. “It’s critical that the historic infrastructure investments we are making reach the places and people who need them the most,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg . “The resources announced today help ensure that a fair share of the contracts and investments go to historically disadvantaged workers, businesses, and communities so they can build generational wealth.” “To realize the potential of President Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure package we must both provide disadvantaged businesses a chance to grow and train a workforce that meets tomorrow’s challenges,” said Federal Highway Administrator Shailen Bhatt. “The historic funding being provided for workforce development, training […]

Guest: Oklahoma is on the brink of a renaissance that represents opportunity for investors

Guest Columnist Sometimes, it’s easy to overlook the wonderful things we’ve grown in our own backyard. Almost everyone does it. We get caught up in the day to day of our lives and forget to appreciate the work we do and the results we see. In Oklahoma, we’re experts at that. Hard work is part of our culture. Bragging about our accomplishments is not. But sometimes there’s a downside to humility, and in our case, it’s time to take stock in — and call attention to — what we’ve been building. The Sooner State has changed, and we’re now on the brink of an economic renaissance led by research, science, technology and one of the strongest entrepreneurial movements in the country. Oklahoma has a top 10 cancer center and a top 10 diabetes center, and our state ranks among the highest in conducting phase-one clinical drug trials. In Norman, the University of Oklahoma has the No. 1 meteorology school, the leading weather radar research program, the top aviation school and one of the nation’s top engineering colleges. OU has received the prestigious Carnegie Classification’s highest rating for research activity, which is a big reason it attracts more than $300 […]
