Project Watch: An updated map of Louisville’s 200-plus largest developments

Three projects on one property were added to this month’s update of Project Watch from Louisville Business First. Project Watch is an online mapping tool LBF launched several years ago. The map tracks commercial real estate projects in the Louisville area of $3 million or more that have been proposed or are under construction. The latest update takes the number of projects on the map to over 200 active or proposed developments. Some projects that have been completed were removed during this update. Explore the interactive map below. The Merchant’s Ice Tower property is being redeveloped into a couple different new businesses for the Smoketown neighborhood, a project that’s anticipated to be around $70 million once completed. Local firm Beargrass Development is planning to convert the 13-story Merchant’s Ice Tower structure, located at 801 Logan St., into an office building with a retail component. James Duffy, co-owner for Beargrass Development, said the building could feature ground-level retail, along with a rooftop space for a bar or restaurant. Plans for the tower are still in the preliminary stages, so nothing is finalized. Along with the tower, Ferncliff Distillery is proposed for 930 Lampton St. in the cold storage facility on […]

MAPA study options to address traffic for busy North 30th street corridor: ‘a lot of it comes down to safety’

Copy This Embed Code: Ad OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — The sound of traffic flying by on 30th street is disturbing businesses and residents in the north Omaha community. "Semi-trucks are doing just as fast most of the time as the cars," said Roger Bennett, owner of Rogers Hair Design. For Bennett, speed is a big concern. "I am just worried mostly about my older customers that have a really slow reflex time because it just happens so fast," Bennett said. Bennett also lives there, experiencing the noise and speed, constantly. "Yeah, the big trucks, especially the cattle trucks, and things that come by, shake the house, quite a bit," Bennett said. In a final report Friday, the Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Area Planning Agency (MAPA) released feasible options to help traffic, but it’s important to note, nothing will immediately come from these options. "Nothing has been designed, this is all just sort of a feasibility level study and the next steps would be dependent on elected officials," said Court Barber, transportation planner for MAPA. It puts an emphasis on safety. "A lot of it comes down to safety, but it is also about making sure that we are moving goods […]

Is A Recession A Good Time To Start A New Business?

Is A Recession A Good Time To Start A New Business?

While economic downturns are a time of hardship, they could also be a time of opportunity. Here are … [+] getty With tech layoffs making the news, it’s fairly likely that 2023 wouldn’t be a year in which it is easy to find a comfy tech job. While this would undoubtedly be a time of hardship, it would also be a time of opportunity. Here are the major threats and opportunities for new startups during a market downturn: 1. Capital: Availability of capital is usually a problem during market downturns. Most startup funds become more conservative and generally speaking invest less in new projects. Even worse for early-stage startups – the risk tolerance of investors might also fall, which means that the available capital for new projects will naturally concentrate on a few “safe” bets. That said, during economic downturns the usual government policy is to increase spending in order to battle the recession. This means that business loans along with other forms of fiscal stimulus (subsidies, etc.) could become more easily accessible. 2. Costs: While capital might be a bit more difficult to find, you might need less of it in order to survive. During a recession, the […]

DoD releases Small Business Strategy

DoD releases Small Business Strategy

WASHINGTON (AFNS) — The Department of Defense released its Small Business Strategy Jan. 26. The strategy promotes a strong, dynamic, and robust small business industrial base by focusing on reducing barriers to entry, increasing set-aside competitions, and leveraging programs to grow the industrial base. “From manufacturers providing the critical parts that we need for our arsenal – to technology companies developing innovative systems and capabilities – small businesses are vital along the entire spectrum of the Department’s needs,” Deputy Secretary of Defense Dr. Kathleen Hicks said. “Reducing barriers and creating more opportunities for small businesses will allow us to expand, innovate, and diversify, increasing our warfighter advantage, strengthening our supply chains, increasing competition in our marketplace, and growing our economy here at home.” Small businesses make up 99.9% of all U.S. businesses as well as 73% of companies in the defense industrial base, and last year small businesses were awarded over 25% of all DoD prime contracts. As the economic engine of our nation, small businesses create jobs, generate innovation, and are essential, daily contributors to national security and the defense mission. This strategy will help DoD harness the full potential of small businesses through three objectives: implement a […]

Jyoti Lalchandani Digital transformation investments in the Middle East, Türkiye, and Africa (META) are set to more than double across the 2021–2026 period, according to the latest forecast from International Data Corporation (IDC). The global technology research, consulting, and events firm said that digital transformation spending in the region will accelerate at a compound yearly growth rate (CAGR) of 16 per cent over the five years, topping $74 billion in 2026 and accounting for 43.2 per cent of all ICT investments made that year. IDC’s Group Vice President and Regional Managing Director, META, Jyoti Lalchandani, said: “For many organisations, the digital and tech investments they made during the pandemic to build resilience could be put to test in 2023 across key business dimensions such as customer experience, operations, and financial management, among others. The implementation of further digitalisation in critical areas and a more rapid shift to a ‘digital business’ approach will be key to separating the thrivers from the survivors. “No matter what the economy throws at us over the coming 12 months, organisations must not lose sight of their digital aspirations. The focus should be on enabling clear and measurable outcomes, and digital spending needs to transition […]

The ‘New Agenda for Peace’ is an opportunity to put prevention centre and to save lives down the line: UK Statement at the UN Security Council

The ‘New Agenda for Peace’ is an opportunity to put prevention centre and to save lives down the line: UK Statement at the UN Security Council

Statement by Ambassador James Kariuki at the Security Council Open Debate on Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace Location: Delivered on: Thank you, President. I am grateful to the Deputy Secretary-General, Peacebuilding Commission Chair, and Ms Ndiaye for their briefings. As we all know, the cost of conflict is unsustainable – both in terms of human suffering, and the resources available for peacekeeping and humanitarian aid. The ‘New Agenda for Peace’ is an opportunity to put prevention front and centre, to save lives and greater costs down the line. President, we understand that the concept of conflict prevention can raise sensitivities. But nationally-owned peacebuilding processes can bolster sovereignty and strengthen state resilience. This is at the heart of the Sustaining Peace framework articulated by the General Assembly in 2016 – which emphasises working with countries to meet their needs, shared responsibility and a whole-of-system approach. Fragilities are universal, and sustaining peace requires constant work in all countries. Working together, the UK sees potential for greater impact in three key areas. Firstly, we should support efforts to strengthen UN foresight capabilities to anticipate risks, and inform responses. We can better leverage data and technology to understand conflict risks, including in places where […]

Blumenthal: With election season comes fresh perspective, opportunity

Blumenthal: With election season comes fresh perspective, opportunity

In case you haven’t been paying attention, it’s election season in Aspen. The usual suspects — exiting office holders, incumbents and new faces — are all out and about touting past achievements and making lots of grand promises which, if you give them a seat at the table, they’ll use to impact your lives and livelihood in ways unimagined by those who preceded them. In some cases, we’ve already seen what they’re capable of — and in the case of Mayor Torre and City Councilmembers Rachel Richards and Skippy Mesirow, the results are generally unspectacular, despite the fact the first two have made their lengthy political careers the primary source of their identities and sustenance and the third one appears headed in the same direction. A high-altitude overview of their years in office shows a lot of political rhetoric and lots of votes on issues they claimed would make the city a better place in which to live and work. But from the reviews of their respective tenures, all the problems we had before they arrived to save us are the same problems still plaguing us, but in most cases much worse than before they were sworn in. Traffic […]
