Wall Street analysts feel otherwise: They’re bullish on Tesla, but think Musk is too distracted. Musk’s tweets have gotten him in trouble with shareholders and the courts. Elon Musk made a much-awaited appearance at Tesla’s fourth quarter earnings call on Wednesday, after the closing bell. True to form, the CEO tweeted from the earnings call in real time, even as he doled out favorable stats on the current state of the company that sought to put to rest the notion that demand for Tesla’s cars is flagging: the January order rate is nearly twice the rate of production, Musk said, and the company expects to deliver 1.8 million vehicles by […]

Small businesses across Long Beach will soon be able to apply for grants to help offset costs incurred by the recent rise in property crimes and vandalism, city officials announced Friday. The city has allocated $350,000 from the Long Beach Recovery Act for the Visual Improvement Grant program. The $1,500 grants are available for local businesses that were affected by crime or vandalism on or after Oct. 1, 2022, and they can be used for storefront repairs, boarding costs, insurance deductibles and business operating expenses, according to the announcement. “Small businesses are a key component to a vibrant community” Economic Development Director Bo Martinez said in a statement. “This grant opportunity is one of several the City has provided over the last few years to help small businesses get through challenging times and start to thrive once again.” Across the city, property crime accounted for nearly 84% of all reported crime last year, according to Long Beach Police Department data. Property crime rose 7.6% last year compared to 2021, with 13,895 reports filed—an average […]

Boeing meets hiring goals at Renton factory with lots riding on 737 production

The Boeing Co.’s fortunes for the coming year will rely heavily on its ability to deliver jets from its 737 line in Renton. Boeing (NYSE: BA) plans to deliver at least 400 737s in 2023, along with high targets for its 787 line, despite supplier constraints on both lines that are restricting efforts to increase production. “Boeing’s fortunes right now are going to rely on continued growth at Global Services and improvements at Defense, but the upside is all going to be driven by Commercial,” Richard Safran , a senior aerospace equities analyst for Seaport Global Securities, said of the company’s three main business units. “If you’re investing in Boeing, the commercial story is what’s important.” The targets may well turn out to be “ambitious” but will be necessary if Boeing wants to hike its production rates to 40 or more by early 2024, said Ken Herbert , aerospace and defense analyst for RBC Capital Markets. The company has been exercising tools like readiness reviews to help suppliers meet their production targets. “There’s always going to be an element that’s going to be out of their control, but they’re doing a lot more to be proactive,” Herbert said. As […]

The idea of working for someone wasn’t in the cards

The idea of working for someone wasn’t in the cards

From building a solid spaghetti tower to a hip design firm, these three millennials are changing the paradigm. Jennifer Perez, Yaileen Obregon and Daniela Purrinos met in grad school. One of the first projects they worked on together was a team-building challenge in a Master of Architecture class at Florida International University. The task was to build a structure with uncooked spaghetti and the women laughed, had fun and dominated the competition. The experience became the basis for their friendship and, eventually, their growing Miami design business. Designing a new blueprint for success “None of us wanted to have a boss,” Perez says. This common goal and drive to become entrepreneurs was something that quickly bonded the trio. Nowhere along the way were they taught how to start or operate their own business. The school’s standard curriculum was geared toward helping graduates succeed at working for a firm, not starting one. But that didn’t stop these young entrepreneurs. From day one, they agreed that they didn’t want to follow the typical route the university designed for its grad students: an internship followed by employment at a studio or firm and perhaps eventually starting your own firm. “Starting our own […]

Squabbling Between Business Competitors Leads To UPEPA Motion In Washington State

Even pretty LED lights can lead to litigation. (Photo by Matt Hunt/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Torchstar Corporation sells LED products through Amazon AMZN +3% . Torchstar brought a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington alleging that a competing seller of the same products, Hyatech, Inc., had basically copied Torchstar’s Amazon sales pages in violation of copyright and other laws. For its part, Hyatech claimed that Torchstar’s sales pages did not qualify for copyright protection and that it was Torchstar that was trying to illegally destroy Hyatech as its competitor through the litigation process. Hyatech asserted a counterclaim against Torchstar claiming that Torchstar had made a false claim of copyright infringement to Amazon including asserting infringement resulting from product images taken by Hyatech’s own photographer. Hyatech also alleged that Torchstar did not register its copyrights with the U.S. Copyright Office until after the litigation commenced. So, to back up for a second, Torchstar sued Hyatech, and Hyatech countersued Torchstar. Nothing unusual to see here, welcome to commercial litigation. But now it gets interesting. Instead of fighting Hyatech’s claims on the merits, Torchstar instead filed a special motion to strike under Washington’s Uniform Public Expression […]

Cannabis delivery businesses getting ready to open in Connecticut

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate Cherry Punch cannabis plants grow in a room with yellow light at the CTPharma cultivation facility in Rocky Hill, Connecticut, on December 13, 2022. There’s Uber Eats, Instacart and Amazon among many other services that bring food or goods to your home. Soon, the home delivery business in Connecticut will be expanded to cannabis. The state, which just recently allowed a handful of retail cannabis stores to open, has so far issued eight provisional licenses for cannabis delivery services . Amanda Ostrowitz, who runs a company called Slap Ash, has been granted one of those licenses, as well as two retail cannabis licenses. How her business will work is between an “Uber Eats model” and a “Domino’s model.” Uber Eats, and similar delivery services, don’t actually prepare any food. They pick up the food where it’s prepared and bring it to your door and, on the surface, it would seem like a similar delivery model for cannabis products would make sense. But there are legal restrictions in Connecticut which make it more complicated than that. “Connecticut does not allow the delivery companies to hold their own inventory. What […]

ChatGPT is on its way to becoming a virtual doctor, lawyer, and business analyst. Here’s a list of advanced exams the AI bot has passed so far.

ChatGPT is making progress towards a host of professional degrees. ChatGPT is a chatbot launched by OpenAI that uses generative artificial intelligence to create its own content. The bot has been used to generate essays and write exams, often passing, but making mistakes, too. Insider rounded up a list of the assignments, quizzes, and tests ChatGPT has passed. Wharton MBA Exam ChatGPT would have received a B or B- on a Wharton exam, according to a professor at the business school. Wharton professor Christian Terwiesch recently tested the technology with questions from his final exam in operations management— which was once a required class for all MBA students — and published his findings . Terwiesch concluded that the bot did an "amazing job" answering basic operations questions based on case studies, which are focused examinations of a person, group, or company, and a common way business schools teach students. In other instances though, ChatGPT made simple mistakes in calculations that Terwiesch thought only required 6th-grade-level math. Terwiesch also noted that the bot had issues with more complex questions that required an understanding of how multiple inputs and outputs worked together. Ultimately, Terwiesch said the bot would receive an B […]
