Removing Friction From Payments Is Good For Customers—And Your Business

getty In periods of economic uncertainty, business leaders look for ways to decrease costs and improve cash flow. They examine all facets of the operation for opportunities to save money and increase efficiency. Payments are an area business leaders shouldn’t overlook, especially in the context of a massive migration toward a digital-first payments approach. Surveys show people want seamless payment experiences and fast, friction-free payment options are quickly becoming a baseline expectation. As an early advocate for integrated payments, a past president of the Electronic Transactions Association and a payments professional who has spent more than two decades navigating turbulent economic times, I’ve witnessed firsthand the demand and benefits that seamless checkout processes can provide. Today, there’s no question that giving customers the experiences they want can help businesses operate more efficiently. After all, it’s in your best interest to make selling seamless; frictionless payments make purchasing easier and improve buying productivity in-store and online. Embedded payments also remove friction in the back office through automating reconciliation processes and increasing cash flow by decreasing accounts receivable. Payments are the instrument that enables commerce to be consummated, and with the right approach, embedded payments create value for buyers and sellers […]

Buses and business on Fifth Avenue

Buses and business on Fifth Avenue By RY RIVARD and MARIE J. FRENCH 02/13/2023 10:00 AM EST Good morning and welcome to the Monday edition of the NewYork & New Jersey Energy newsletter. We’ll take a look at the week ahead and look back on what you may have missed last week. BUSES AND BUSINESS — POLITICO’s Danielle Muoio Dunn: As one of his first major infrastructure initiatives, Mayor Eric Adams plans to reconstruct the famous Fifth Avenue shopping corridor — wading into a fiery debate that has pitted high-end retailers and transportation advocacy groups over the future of car access in the heart of the nation’s biggest metropolis. Elected leaders are eager to draw people back to the area that has seen steep declines in foot traffic since the start of the pandemic, threatening tax revenue that funds essential city services and a hospitality industry that’s a major driver of tourism and jobs. But they must weigh any changes against the street’s function as a major transportation artery for hundreds of thousands of bus riders with connections to several subway lines. The move comes three years after former Mayor Bill de Blasio first attempted to transform Fifth Avenue […]

JUST IN: Muddled Process Deterring Small Businesses from Defense Contracts, Study Shows

iStock illustration Small companies accounted for 23 percent of business conducted with the Defense Department in fiscal year 2022, but the relationship between the department and small firms is fragile, according to a recent industry report. Despite a record $159 billion — a 3 percent increase over the previous year — awarded to small businesses from the federal government in 2022, the number of small businesses receiving prime government contracts remains in steady decline, said market intelligence firm HigherGov. In 2022, 58,681 small businesses received federal contracts. That’s fewer than half the number that received contracts in 2010, despite there being more than 400,000 small businesses registered to perform contracts with the government, according to the Feb. 13 “Government Small Business Contracting Report.” Major drivers of the decreasing number of businesses receiving awards “include increased use of contract vehicles available to a limited number of firms, expanding regulations (such as cybersecurity requirements), and contract bundling that benefits larger firms and incumbents,” the report said. Furthermore, the government has put more emphasis on increasing the dollar amount of contracts, rather than the “number and diversity of small businesses winning contracts,” the report added. The average small business contractor received awards […]

Tate & Lyle has different goals for each segment. Bed Bath & Beyond Canada is going out of business

Bed Bath & Beyond Canada is going out of business

Daphne Howland/Retail Dive Without its corporate parent to support its unprofitable operations, Bed Bath & Beyond Canada is insolvent and will wind down , according to filings with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice posted by Alvarez & Marsal Canada, a consultancy that has been appointed monitor for the proceedings. “The wind-down process must be commenced as soon as possible to maximize recoveries and limit costs by ensuring that BBB Canada can exit from all retail stores as soon as practicable and avoid further rent, employee costs, critical supplier/service provider fees, bank fees, and other ongoing amounts,” the retailer’s representatives noted in the filings. Access now➔ Bed Bath & Beyond CEO Sue Gove last week hailed a last-minute infusion of funds from a stock offering, other stock-related proceeds and a loan that could raise $1 billion and give the near-bankrupt home goods retailer some hope of recovery. But its last-ditch turnaround plan no longer includes its Canada business, according to the Canadian court filings. “After consideration of all strategic alternatives, the Bed Bath & Beyond Group has determined that it is no longer in a position to provide financial and operational support to BBB Canada,” per the filings. “BBB […]
