New US Offshore Energy Boss Takes Over as Wind Industry Falters

Photographer: Eric Thayer/Bloomberg The US government is moving urgently to nurture new offshore wind and carbon storage industries despite some economic hurdles, according to the nation’s newly minted ocean energy regulator. The tasks of overseeing the buildout of those nascent industries falls to Elizabeth Klein, an environmental lawyer and clean energy champion just appointed director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management . Klein takes over at a critical time, as her agency makes decisions about where to install ocean wind farms, how to safely store carbon dioxide under the sea floor and the future of oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. That comes against a backdrop of challenges from inflationary pressures to supply chain shortages. “The president has been clear that we are in a climate crisis, we have a responsibility as the federal government to do something about that and we can turn that into an opportunity to transition to cleaner sources of energy,” Klein told Bloomberg in her first interview in the new role. At the same time, the focus will be on doing it in a “way that really supports communities” while tapping American smarts and innovation, she added. Elizabeth Klein Those opportunities converge […]

Bain Capital has closed its second Tech Opportunities fund with $2.4 billion

Bain Capital has closed its second Tech Opportunities fund with $2.4 billion

It’s always nice to have a lot of capital to invest, but managing a large new fund can be even more advantageous right now given that many later-stage companies that put off fundraising last year will likely be in the market come hell or high water in 2023. No doubt traditional venture firms like NEA, which just closed on $6.2 billion across two new funds, will be waiting for them. So will the buyout firm Bain Capital , which just closed its second growth Tech Opportunities fund with $2.4 billion, up from the $1.3 billion that the outfit put to work through the first vehicle of its type in 2019. The 30-person team used its debut fund to fund mid-market buyouts, make cross-platform investments and pursue “tactical opportunities” that could be bolted onto others of its investments. But late-stage venture-backed startups are among the “archetypes” that the group funds, and late-stage startups could prove especially attractive right now given there is less competition to support them at the moment. At least, according to Crunchbase data, late-stage and tech growth funding hovered around $40 billion in the fourth quarter of last year, down 64% year over year, from $110 billion […]

Can Valentine's Day ever be an inclusive marketing opportunity?

Can Valentine’s Day ever be an inclusive marketing opportunity?

Valentine’s Day has historically focused on a one dimensional view of love that excludes the majority Valentine’s Day. A day that historically celebrates and validates a one dimensional view of love. An archetype of romance which is anything but inclusive. Celebrating romantic love, all too often between a man and a woman, primarily through purchasing gifts, in many ways feels out of touch with the reality of multifaceted lives in which ‘romantic love’ is not the pinnacle of a patriarchal achievement economy. With the stigma around being ‘single’ failing to reflect the reality of choice, the plethora of cards featuring imaging heterosexual couples adds to the sharp edges of a ‘celebration’ which in many ways must belong to a bygone era. Yet while the mass market mainstream Valentine’s marketing machine might favour romantic love above all else, many have already co-opted Valentine’s for their own ends. From parents choosing Valentine’s Day as a moment to mark their love for their children, to the growing popularity of ‘Galentine’s Day’ a special day dedicated to honouring friendship in all its forms. So can marketers also embrace the power of doing Valentine’s Day differently, or is it time to call time on […]

How do you survive in a time of unprecedented change, both in your industry and the global economy? The answer is, you don’t. More specifically, instead of white-knuckling it through change to survive, you lean into change as the door to unforeseen growth and opportunities. Sam Bufton, president and chief operations officer, joined Poppulo in the fall of 2022 and brings a fresh perspective to the digital signage industry. Learning the value of a holistic perspective and of novel solutions aiming to connect human beings amid intense isolation during the pandemic and lockdown period, Bufton retains a passion for keeping the end goal in mind: connecting customers to each other on a human level, regardless […]
