Paychex data also shows the January one-month annualized hourly earnings growth for employees of small businesses falls to its lowest level since 2020 ROCHESTER, N.Y., Jan. 31, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — The rate of hourly wage growth for U.S. small businesses continued to decline to 4.66 percent year-over-year in January according to the latest Paychex | IHS Markit Small Business Employment Watch . Additionally, the one-month annualized earnings growth fell to 2.88 percent in January, the lowest level since December of 2020. The Small Business Jobs Index, which measures national employment growth for businesses with fewer than 50 workers, rose by 0.18 percent to 99.56. "Our small business wage data indicates that wage gains are moderating, as has been the aim of monetary policy by the Fed," said James Diffley, chief regional economist at IHS Markit. "Although small businesses have struggled in attracting and retaining employees over the past two years, the job index shows they continue to make gains in hiring with the easing of wage increases," said John Gibson , Paychex president and CEO. New York CNN — Ira “Bob” Born, known as the “Father of Peeps ,” died on Sunday. He was 98. Just Born Quality Confections, the Pennsylvania-based company that makes various candies, including the chick-shaped marshmallows, confirmed Born’s death in a statement. The company said that Born will be “remembered as a tireless and passionate advocate for the candy industry and a wonderful supporter of our community.” Born was part of the second generation in the family business that his father, Sam Born, founded in 1923. His son, Ross, retired as CEO in 2021. “We extend our deepest sympathy to his son, Ross, and the entire family,” said David Shaffer, board chair and co-CEO of Just Born. The Colorado medical cannabis dispensary whose challenge of IRS rules led a U.S. Supreme Court justice to question federal marijuana prohibition saw its bid to keep tax records secret rejected in federal court . The 10th Circuit of Appeals in Denver on Friday affirmed a district court’s ruling that the U.S. Constitution does not protect Standing Akimbo from IRS requests to see the company’s business records , Law 360 reported. The Denver-based dispensary has spent several years fighting IRS investigators who suspected the business was improperly claiming business deductions on its taxes in violation of Section 280E of the federal tax code. Passed by Congress in the mid-1980s, 280E bars marijuana businesses from taking standard business deductions . In Standing Akimbo’s case, the dispensary tried to block the IRS from accessing Colorado Marijuana Enforcement Division records as part of an audit.
