The Supply Side: More retailers focusing on healthcare in 2023

Retailers seem to agree that one sector that’s ripe for disruption is healthcare. Multiple companies are making moves to fill the gaps they see by investing in providing health and wellness services for their customers. Scott Benedict, an executive at Rogers marketing agency WhyteSpyder, said healthcare is another battleground for retailers given the continued state of disarray in the sector. He said healthcare services are traffic drivers and also a way for retailers to provide solutions that their customers need and appreciate. “There is a halo effect that can result from the pharmacy and health and wellness services provided by retailers,” Benedict said. “It can take time to profit from these services themselves, but with the customer loyalty you can build and trip occurrence, you can add to the profits and eventually support an extra revenue stream.” CLINICAL TRIALS In recent weeks, grocery giant Kroger said its healthcare division launched a network of clinical trial sites at select Kroger pharmacies and retail clinics. The announcement comes with Kroger’s first trial related to colorectal cancer. Kroger Health said it would collaborate with pharmaceutical sponsors, contract research organizations and health systems to conduct the clinical trials. The clinical trials are a […]

Amazon’s new back-to-office policy is welcome news to small businesses around Seattle HQ

Shannon Rau, owner of Martha’s Garden dog daycare and bar, says she hopes Amazon’s new work policy will boost business at her establishment in Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood. (GeekWire Photo / Kurt Schlosser) Inside a dog daycare business in Seattle’s South Lake Union on Friday, a handful of pups were scurrying around and barking as if they knew something was changing in the neighborhood that Amazon calls home. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy sent a company-wide email that morning with a new mandate: corporate and tech employees need to be in the office at least three days a week. Shannon Rau, owner of the daycare, indoor dog park and human bar called Martha’s Garden , called it “great news” for her 2-year-old small business on 9th Avenue North in the heart of Amazonia adjacent to downtown Seattle. “Our whole plan was kind of based on having the Amazon crowd here,” Rau said. “Hopefully this will really create a bit of change.” Change has been rough over the past three years for businesses in Seattle and other urban centers across the country that rely on the steady drumbeat of worker foot traffic. Whether it’s a pet-friendly bar or a restaurant […]

Blizzard president sends a message | This Week in Business

Blizzard president sends a message | This Week in Business

Mike Ybarra’s comments in an all-hands meeting upset some employees, but to what end? This Week in Business is our weekly recap column , a collection of stats and quotes from recent stories presented with a dash of opinion (sometimes more than a dash) and intended to shed light on various trends. Check back every Friday for a new entry. Morale at Activision Blizzard took a hit this week, which is probably a lead we could have used for any This Week in Business column of the past year and a half. This time the problems stemmed from a Blizzard Entertainment all-hands meeting that was reported on by Game Developer . The intent of the meeting was to discuss the results of an internal employee satisfaction survey, but whatever those results were, Blizzard president Mike Ybarra put on a performance that probably made them worse. In the Q&A section of the meeting, Ybarra addressed the recent decision to cut employees’ profit-sharing bonus by almost half, which couldn’t have gone over well considering Blizzard had just finished one of its strongest quarters in years , nearly doubling its operating income thanks to the launch of Overwatch 2, the mobile hit […]

The Business Of Fun

The Business Of Fun

Zoom and other remote work tools reshaped the legal industry in the nearly three years since the start of the pandemic. Who among us doesn’t love the thrill of secretly taking a professional meeting in pajama pants? Yet, for all the utility we derive from remote working, there remains a rich debate on exactly how to blend them with the traditional in-office business model. Much of the discussion has focused on what will yield the best mix of productivity and culture. Among larger firms, most have settled on the so-called Kirkland model, which requires attorneys to be onsite at least three days per week. But there’s evidence that model isn’t taking root the way we’d expect. I recently attended a law firm managing partner conference, and a speaker from a large consulting company that evaluated the effectiveness of the model called the three-day model a “flop.” Enforcement is inconsistent, which can damage morale, and attorneys that highly value flexibility have ample opportunity to find alternative employment even in a tightening labor market. Worse yet, the training, mentorship, and culture that law firm leaders seek to cultivate are being hampered by the lack of face-to-face contact. Is there a way […]

2 new tools aim to reverse decade-long decline in small business industrial base

2 new tools aim to reverse decade-long decline in small business industrial base

The federal community has bemoaned the shrinking small business industrial base for much of the past decade. By one recent estimate, the number of small businesses receiving federal prime contracts in fiscal 2022 dropped by more than half since 2010. But instead of just paying lip service to how important small businesses are — “they are the engine that runs the economy” is a common phrase that it seems like every member of Congress and every Small Business Administration administrator has repeated over the last 10 years — the Biden administration is equipping agencies with two new tools to find potential firms to replenishment the industrial base and compete for federal work. “At a time when applications to start new small businesses in America are at an all-time high, it is imperative that the federal marketplace leverage this small business growth in supply chains that support agency missions, reverse the significant decline of small business participation in the federal supplier base over the last decade, and increase the share of federal contract dollars awarded to small disadvantaged businesses to 15% by 2025, as called for by the President [in a 2021 memo],” wrote Jason Miller, the deputy director for […]

Another photography business goes out of business

Tolman Media shuts its doors(KVLY) FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – Months after a North Dakota-based photography business shut its doors leaving brides and grooms scrambling days and weeks before saying, ‘I do,’ another wedding media business announced it has closed up shop. Tolman Media, which subcontracted with North Dakota and Minnesota photographers and videographers, announced that as of Feb. 15 the business “officially ceased operations and been dismantled. All assets have been sold, there is no cash remaining in the business, and no further employees, members, managers, or officers active. All websites, emails, and contact information has been shut off.” The company holds several LLC registrations with the state of Utah, but none in North Dakota or Minnesota. In a statement on its website, Tolman Media states that “all weddings that were originally booked through the Tolman Media booking service have now been transferred directly to the photographers and videographers to fulfill themselves.” The company states the closing comes “as a complete surprise.” The North Dakota Attorney General’s Office says as of Friday morning, it has not received any complaints from Tolman Media clients, but urge consumers to do so if you have been financially impacted without receiving […]

Opportunity Knocks: 25 N Johnson Park

Opportunity Knocks: 25 N Johnson Park

Three individual properties that share a contiguous border are all now on the market. While each of these properties is significant in its own right, together they are a commanding opportunity. It all starts with 25 N Johnson Park – formerly 31 Club, and most recently Oscar’s, which was owned by JJ Alfieri, who sadly passed away before ever realizing the full potential of the establishment. Now, the building is for sale. It features a turnkey restaurant, in a building that sits on a large corner lot (97’ x 128’) with means of egress from both Elmwood and Johnson Park. There are also 15 off-street parking spots. 25 N Johnson Park should be an incredible asset for a new owner, as well as the neighborhood, and all of downtown. Not only has the restaurant been renovated in recent years, it’s also got plenty of opulent spaces to work with. Occupancy within the 7,468 SF footprint building permits for 190 people, between all dining areas, bar room, and second floor banquet space. Anyone that has even been inside the building knows that this is a real winner. There are plenty of luxurious dining areas, a fantastic bar room, and front […]

Reitmans: 24% Price Difference Between The Share Classes Is A Buying Opportunity

Reitmans: 24% Price Difference Between The Share Classes Is A Buying Opportunity

cemagraphics Investment thesis On January 25, I revealed in my MP service that I’d taken a position in a Canadian women’s clothing retailer named Reitmans ( RET.A.CA ) ( OTCPK:RTMAF ) ( RET.CA ) ( OTCPK:RTMNF ). It’s been a wild ride as the market valuation of the company has almost doubled since then which made this my second-largest position by far. Something unusual has happened over the past weeks as the price difference between the two classes of shares of the company has grown to 24%. In my view, Reitmans is still undervalued and there is very little difference between the two classes of shares which is why I switched my position to Class A shares. Let’s review. Overview of the opportunity Reitmans is a family-owned clothing retailer with a 96-year-old history, and it currently has just over 400 stores in Canada under the Reitmans, Penningtons, and RW&Co brands. Looking at the financial performance for the past decade, Reitmans has been struggling to remain profitable and COVID-19 lockdowns forced the company to embark on a restructuring that resulted in the closure of the Thyme Maternity and Addition Elle banners, the shutdown of 140 stores as well as the […]
