‘Gateway Roles’ Open Up Opportunity To Workers Without Degrees

‘Gateway Roles’ Open Up Opportunity To Workers Without Degrees

Paper Ceiling Guild The paper ceiling is real. Even in one of the tightest labor markets in history, 44% of recent job openings required a bachelor’s degree. The paper ceiling, like the more familiar glass ceiling , is a reference to an artificial barrier holding back qualified candidates from rising into new roles. In this case, that barrier is literally paper—a degree. Sure, the number of job postings requiring degrees has been coming down as more major employers pledge to drop degree requirements and instead hire based on skill. But even many middle-skill roles —those that should require less than a four-year degree—are still requiring a bachelor’s. A major ad campaign, Tear the Paper Ceiling , run by the Ad Council and the nonprofit Opportunity@Work , aims to change that. They’re advocating for increased opportunity for 70-plus million Americans skilled through alternative routes, or STARs , who have the skills to be working in more advanced roles than they currently are. Tearing down or tearing through the paper ceiling, however, won’t be easy. Even if we could wave a magic wand and poof degree requirements overnight, we’d still have the same old hiring practices, management culture, and job structures. […]

Photographer: David Paul Morris/Bloomberg CVS Health Corp. will name a new head for the company’s pharmacy services business and fill a new position, chief product officer for consumer businesses, according to a person familiar with the matter. David Joyner, a former CVS executive, will return to the company as head of the pharmacy services segment after leaving three years ago. He’ll replace Alan Lotvin, who is retiring in April. She’ll focus on product development for CVS’s consumer health-care businesses. Both will join CVS’s executive leadership team and report to Chief Executive Officer Karen Lynch, according to the person, who asked not to be named discussing private information. Lynch came to CVS in its 2018 merger with insurer Aetna. She has steered the pharmacy and retail chain […]

Flamingo Crossings: The latest on Disney’s mixed-use project

The Walt Disney Co.’s (NYSE: DIS) Flamingo Crossings mixed-use center in Orlando is staying busy entering the new year after several years of ongoing construction. The theme park giant’s latest work at the retail, dining and lodging complex includes preparing stores for future shoppers. Construction on the center started nearly a decade ago with hotel properties on the northern side of the project at the northwest corner of Western Way and State Road 429 on Sugar Belle Drive. Why this matter: The growing mixed-use center will continue to create new jobs. The addition also brings online more options for tourists. The property is home to four hotels with more than 900 rooms combined — including a TownePlace Suites and Home2 Suites by Hilton — and several open restaurants such as a Target, Starbucks, PDQ, Five Guys, Persimmon Hollow Brewing Co. and more. Few details have been shared on the ongoing construction, but industry resources estimate the cost of a 200,000-square-foot center as at least $92.4 million-$136.6 million. For example, this month Disney filed notices of commencement for two of its stores: Improvements of restaurant buildout for the Lime Fresh Mexican Grill at 153 Sugar Belle Drive, Unit C. The […]

Is There An Opportunity With iEnergizer Limited's (LON:IBPO) 44% Undervaluation?

Is There An Opportunity With iEnergizer Limited’s (LON:IBPO) 44% Undervaluation?

Source: Shutterstock Today we’ll do a simple run through of a valuation method used to estimate the attractiveness of iEnergizer Limited ( LON:IBPO ) as an investment opportunity by taking the expected future cash flows and discounting them to their present value. The Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) model is the tool we will apply to do this. Don’t get put off by the jargon, the math behind it is actually quite straightforward. We would caution that there are many ways of valuing a company and, like the DCF, each technique has advantages and disadvantages in certain scenarios. If you still have some burning questions about this type of valuation, take a look at the Simply Wall St analysis model . The Method We’re using the 2-stage growth model, which simply means we take in account two stages of company’s growth. In the initial period the company may have a higher growth rate and the second stage is usually assumed to have a stable growth rate. To start off with, we need to estimate the next ten years of cash flows. Where possible we use analyst estimates, but when these aren’t available we extrapolate the previous free cash flow (FCF) […]

Petrobras: An Arbitrage Opportunity

Petrobras: An Arbitrage Opportunity

Summary Petrobras’ common stock is currently trading at a significant premium to the preferred shares. The premium is approximately one standard deviation above the 5-year average value. I expect some mean reversion, especially in light of the abandonment of the privatization plan. ayo888 The Brazilian oil kingpin – Petrobras has had the spread between its common (NYSE: PBR ) and preferred (NYSE: PBR.A ) shares widen lately with the premium of the former on the latter surpassing one standard deviation above the 5-year average. Now that the company was pulled from the privatization list, I see no justification of significant premium of the common over the preferred shares, so some mean reversion should follow, opening up a potential arbitrage opportunity. The idea could be played out by going long the preferred shares and selling the common stock. Last I covered Petrobras in November. Ownership structure Petrobras has a dual class ownership structure with 7.4M common shares and 5.6M preferred shares. While the majority of the PBR.A shares are owned by private investors (retail and institutional), the Brazilian government holds 50.3% of the common shares, which ensures that it has control over the entity as the preferred stock has no […]

Sealed Air Corporation: The Decline Represents A Buying Opportunity

Sealed Air Corporation: The Decline Represents A Buying Opportunity

Summary Shares of Sealed Air Corporation have taken a hit over the past few months, with some weakness showing on the company’s top line. Even so, the company’s fundamental condition is robust, and the picture has been enhanced by a major acquisition. The stock is also cheap, leaving investors an opportunity to buy now that shares have fallen. Looking for a helping hand in the market? Members of Crude Value Insights get exclusive ideas and guidance to navigate any climate. Learn More » Gyro With major brand names such as Bubble Wrap, Cryovac, Autobag, and Sealed Air under its name, Sealed Air Corporation (NYSE: SEE ) is one of the most well-known packaging companies on the planet. Unfortunately, though, this does not mean that the company is immune from volatility. Recent mixed performance has more than offset the fact that the company is trading at fairly cheap levels right now and, as a result, shares have fallen at a time when the broader market has increased. Although this can be painful in the near term, there are plenty of reasons to be bullish about the company. Cash flows are generally increasing and shares of the enterprise do look cheap. […]

The Once-in-a-Generation Opportunity to Remake Downtown

The Once-in-a-Generation Opportunity to Remake Downtown

“The nation is in the midst of one of the biggest workforce shifts in generations,” writes the Washington Post Editorial Board, describing the effects of nearly three years of stay-at-home orders, working from home, and hybrid work schedules. “Many now have experienced what it is like to work from home and have discovered they prefer it.” While much of the discussion in cities has focused on the fiscal distress caused by office vacancies, the loss of demand for retail uses in urban cores, declining transit ridership , and shifting commute patterns , less frequently addressed is the opportunity to, for lack of a better phrase, build back better—to turn the crisis of downtown vacancies into an opportunity to solve some of the challenges facing downtowns and regions since even before the pandemic. The Washington Post writes to refocus the discussion on the opportunities, identifying two obvious opportunities—to return workers to offices and to convert commercial spaces to residential units and entertainment venues. “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reshape downtowns for the future. It should be a top priority of mayors and city councils around the country,” according to the editorial. “The goal is a ‘24/7’ downtown with ample […]
