America’s productivity engine is sputtering. Fixing it is a $10 trillion opportunity

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Since 2005, productivity growth has been lackluster, averaging 1.4% a year, compared to the post-World War II average of 2.2%. That is a problem. Increasing productivity–economic output per unit of input–maintains U.S. competitiveness and improves our quality of life. It is also essential to meet challenges like inflation, debt loads, entitlements, and the energy transition. Regaining historical rates of productivity growth could generate a total of $10 trillion for U.S. GDP by 2030, or $15,200 per U.S. household that year. It won’t be easy–but productivity is growing fast in some sectors and geographies. Since 2007, the information sector has grown at 5.5% annually. North Dakota’s economy has grown at nearly 3.5% and Washington’s at 2.3%. We need to improve productivity more broadly. To get the U.S. economic engine humming, we need to overcome four challenges. Workforce shortages and skills gaps There are two separate but linked workforce challenges. One is the lack of workers. U.S. workforce participation rate has fallen to 62.3% , down from 67% in the late 1990s. Only part of this is due to an aging population: More than 5 million Americans are not in the workforce but say they want […]

“A moment of opportunity” to slash industrial emissions

“A moment of opportunity” to slash industrial emissions

Australia could reduce key industry emissions by 92 per cent by 2050, according to a new report. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it. Pathways to Industrial Decarbonisation is the third and final report from the Australian Industry ETI A new Australian Industry ETI report says Australia could cut annual greenhouse gas emissions in five key industrial sectors by 92 per cent by 2050, based on 2020 levels. Widely supported by industry partners, the report outlines an ambitious pathway to reducing emissions in line with limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees. The report says a “coordinated action scenario” would need substantial government incentives to complement industry leadership. All told, the investment required could total around $625 billion, or more than $20 billion annually for 30 years. But the rewards could be huge: a competitive advantage for Australian green industries; new export sectors; sustained market share in existing markets; up to 1.35 million jobs; all with far less land-based sequestration than would be required under alternative scenarios. The findings are published in the third and final phase of research from the Australian Industry Energy Transitions Initiative (Australian Industry ETI), Pathways to Industrial Decarbonisation . “This is a […]

Spotify: Product Expansion Represents An Opportunity

Spotify: Product Expansion Represents An Opportunity

Summary The impact of a volatile macro environment on Spotify should be fairly limited due to their sticky subscription revenue. This now appears to be priced into the stock though. It is too early to say how beneficial Spotify’s product expansion efforts will be, but given Spotify’s valuation, they represent an upside opportunity rather than a downside risk. Investors remain skeptical of Spotify’s business, and hence, the stock continues to have a modest valuation. Avid Photographer. Travel the world to capture moments and beautiful photos. Sony Alpha User Over the past few years Spotify (NYSE: SPOT ) has established itself as the dominant audio streaming platform globally. Despite this, investors generally remain skeptical about the company’s ability to generate decent profit margins. This is likely somewhat shortsighted given Spotify’s recent strategic moves. At the end of 2022, Spotify had over 100 million tracks , 5 million podcasts and 300,000 audio books on their platform. Continued user growth and product expansion should improve Spotify’s margins and in time bargaining power. While the stock is not as undervalued as it was several months ago, even a modest level of profitability should still see Spotify outperform the market over a longer time […]
