DLA Named Agency of the Year for Supporting Nation’s Small Businesses

DLA Named Agency of the Year for Supporting Nation’s Small Businesses

Recognition of the Defense Logistics Agency’s success partnering with American small businesses reached new heights Feb. 15 when it was named Agency of the Year at the sold-out National Small Business Conference in New Orleans. The honor was presented by the National 8(a) Association and National HUBZone Council. The Small Business Administration’s 8(a) program focuses on socially and economically disadvantaged businesses, and the HUBZone program assists those in historically underutilized business zones. "This is a great honor and recognition of the collaborative and collective work we’re achieving in strengthening and deepening our industry engagement with the small business community," said Dwight Deneal, DLA’s director of small business programs. Daily efforts from DLA’s acquisition and information technology teams helped make the award possible, he added. The award was based on DLA’s ability to meet fiscal year 2022 small business contracting goals set by the Defense Department and for its history helping small businesses understand and navigate federal contracting processes so they can compete more effectively for contracts. DLA exceeded its small business goal for the 10th consecutive year in fiscal year 2022 by obligating 39% of its contracts to small businesses against a 35.1% objective. The agency also exceeded its […]

How a student project turned into a successful business with Amazon’s Black Business Accelerator

How a student project turned into a successful business with Amazon’s Black Business Accelerator

This Black History Month, meet David Price, small business owner, big thinker, and founder of The Safety Pouch. David Price first thought of the idea for his business, The Safety Pouch , when he was just 16 years old and growing up in New Orleans. But it wasn’t until Price’s freshman year of college that a school project compelled him to implement his idea. Encouraged by his professor, Price brought The Safety Pouch to market, and in just a few months, he built a thriving small business with purpose. The Safety Pouch is an orange, wallet-sized holder used to store car registration and other important documents to help drivers stay organized on the road. The pouch can be clipped to the driver’s sun visor, eliminating the need to reach across the vehicle or into their glove compartment to access documents. “To know that I am making a small yet meaningful impact in relieving that stress and creating safer and more efficient traffic stops makes it all worth it,” Price said. Price has been able to grow his small business by leaning into his Amazon storefront and participating in Amazon’s Black Business Accelerator , which is dedicated to helping build […]

Creation of F&M Bank Arena by county government was ‘missed opportunity’ | OPINION

APSU Governors basketball court at the F&M Bank Arena on Jan. 13, 2023. (Lee Erwin) Clarksville Now publishes opinion pieces representing both sides of a variety of topics. Opinions presented do not necessarily reflect those of the newsroom or management. To join the conversation, email your opinion piece to news@clarksvillenow.com . Contributed commentary by Clarksville City Council member Wallace Redd. After reading the news article (about the Mayor’s Power Breakfast, “ Mayors give updates on athletic complex, Exit 1 lighting, downtown parking and more “), two words stuck out in my mind: missed opportunity. Our Montgomery County mayor (Wes Golden) spoke of the tax revenue that this project ( F&M Bank Arena ) will bring in. We all know that this multi-purpose event center will be a net liability, and most government projections are a fantasy at best. The reality is this was a missed opportunity, because from the beginning our county leaders involved in the development of the MPEC never took into consideration the private sector. With proper negotiations and flexibility of location, today we could have an event center with no cost to the taxpayer. It could have been a tax resource to help pay down our […]

Biodiversity credits: An opportunity to create a new crediting framework (commentary)

Biodiversity credits: An opportunity to create a new crediting framework (commentary)

Biodiversity credits have the potential to accelerate funding for biodiversity conservation while benefiting local communities and biodiversity custodians. To make voluntary biodiversity credits work for nature and its custodians, we need to step out of the carbon credit framing for technical, social and practical reasons. This post is a commentary. The views expressed are those of the authors, not necessarily of Mongabay. Biodiversity conservation requires a fundamentally different approach to managing climate change, and their respective crediting systems need to accommodate that difference for technical, social and practical reasons. Carbon credits are created so that emitters can compensate on an annual basis. Biodiversity credits (biocredits) are created to stop and reverse species loss by addressing a multitude of threats, including permanent habitat loss, in hand with local biodiversity custodians. The nature of the problem they address is different. To make biocredits work for nature and its custodians, and to successfully accelerate funding for biodiversity conservation, a new framework is needed. Operationally speaking, a biodiversity credit system should deliver measurable ecological outcomes and long-term certainty to investors and biodiversity custodians. These ecological outcomes, represented in biocredits, can be transferred and sold to individuals and companies seeking to make claims on […]

Devotion to product led to business opportunity in Gaylord

Devotion to product led to business opportunity in Gaylord

GAYLORD — A few years ago, Joe Trever of Gaylord was introduced to Jersey Mike’s submarine sandwiches by a new friend, Joe Ancinec. It was during the COVID-19 lockdown that Trever, who was in the construction business, had done some work on Ancinec’s place at Lakes of the North. The two became friends while Ancinec, an IT professional, was working remotely. A couple of times a month, Ancinec had to go to the Detroit area and on his way back he started bringing Jersey Mike’s sub with him. Trever became addicted. "One night we talked about Jersey Mike’s and I said I thought it would do real well in Gaylord because it is such a good product," said Trever. The two decided to inquire about getting a Jersey Mike’s franchise for Gaylord. At the time, company representatives told them someone else had the rights to the franchise in Gaylord but suggested the two contact them in a couple of years to see if the situation had changed. Ancinec and Trever waited until last March and contacted the company again. "I told Joe on his birthday that Jersey Mike’s called and wanted to meet us," recalled Trever. The pair met […]

Agritecture can be referred to as a fusion of agriculture with architecture. It can be employed within a building using vertical farming to intensify plant growth and green density. Lack of Arable Land to Drive Agritecture Market One of the most essential factors contributing to the expansion of the global agritecture market is the loss of fertile land. This can be ascribed to the development of domestic areas, rise in number of metropolitan cities, commercial places, amongst others making the cultivation of crops troublesome. The shrinkage of land can also be attributed to climate extremities, […]
