Tech Layoffs Are An Opportunity To Build A Resilient Tech Team

Tech Layoffs Are An Opportunity To Build A Resilient Tech Team

Tech layoffs Getty Images In today’s fast-paced tech industry, layoffs have become an unfortunate reality. However, instead of viewing tech layoffs as a setback, companies can use them as an opportunity to build a resilient tech team. First, it is important to understand the reasons behind tech layoffs. As companies prepare for a potential recession and difficulties in raising capital, layoffs have become seen as a necessary measure. Last year, more than 107,000 jobs were cut from public and private tech companies in the US, with thousands more cut in January of this year alone. This includes companies such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Goldman Sachs, and Salesforce. Most tech talent is able to find a job quickly, since there’s still high demand for tech talent, according to a recent survey by the ManpowerGroup, but the demand is softening. The primary reason for the layoffs at the top tech firms and the softening demand for tech talent more broadly is a bearish market, where investors are becoming more conservative and unwilling to invest in high-risk ventures. Additionally, the primary market is down significantly, with fewer IPOs expected in the near future. However, as a highly experienced expert in the topic […]

EMEC floating wind demo site offers £690 million opportunity to UK

The economic potential of EMEC’s proposed 100 MW floating offshore wind test and demonstration site has been estimated at £690 million to UK economy. Courtesy of EMEC. The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), based in Orkney, Scotland, concluded concept design for a new floating offshore wind test and demonstration site in 2022 and is aiming to secure a lease for a 100 MW site ~20 km west of Orkney. EMEC’s proposed test site will comprise six individual berths and accommodate floating offshore wind turbines of up to 20 MW rated capacity. Four of the six berths will be grid-connected, while an additional two berths will be reserved for power-to-X applications. The site will offer floating wind developers the opportunity to prove performance and de-risk technologies in energetic metocean conditions, typical of ScotWind, Celtic Sea, Californian, and other commercially leased projects. Independent analysis by BiGGAR Economics calculates that the proposed demonstration site has the potential to generate £690 million gross value add (GVA) to the UK economy, £442 million of which will accrue in Scotland. BiGGAR’s economic impact analysis considers the full floating offshore wind value chain, from construction and development of the site through to operation and client demonstration […]

Coffee Correction Could Be a Buying Opportunity

Coffee Correction Could Be a Buying Opportunity

Arabica coffee futures trade in the U.S. on the Intercontinental Exchange in the soft commodity sector of the raw materials asset class. Brazil is the world’s top producer and exporter of Arabica beans. Robusta coffee futures trade in Europe on the Intercontinental Exchange. Arabica beans have a smoother, sweeter taste, with hints of chocolate, sugar, and fruits or berries. Robusta beans are stronger and harsher, with more of a bitter taste. Robusta coffee has around twice the level of caffeine as the Arabica variety. Italian expressos use Robusta beans, while Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, and most other coffees are Arabica. After rising to the highest prices in over a decade in late 2021 and early 2022, Robusta and Arabica futures prices have corrected. Arabica correction In my Q4 report on soft commodities on Barchart , I highlighted that a 24.49% price decline in Q4 pushed Arabica futures 26.01% lower in 2022. Coffee was the worst-performing soft commodity last year. The chart highlights the decline from $2.6045 per pound in February 2022, an eleven-year high, to $1.4205 in January 2023. At just below the $1.62 level on January 25, coffee futures are sitting closer to the low than last year’s peak. […]

NC exec reported $25M in business expenses – feds say he spent it on luxury bling

A Fayetteville man accused of trying to dodge millions in income taxes has pleaded guilty to federal charges. Christopher Scott Harrison submitted the guilty plea Tuesday to willfully filing a false tax return with respect to nearly $25 million in unreported income he paid to himself from his company – a crime apparently uncovered by a bankruptcy accountant. Harrison is being represented by Ripley Eagles Rand with Womble Bond Dickinson. "Mr. Harrison has accepted full responsibility for the tax charge in this case, and he is continuing to cooperate in the investigation," Rand said in an email. Harrison faces up to three years in prison, restitution to the Internal Revenue Service and a potential fine when sentenced this spring. Prosecutors claim that his scheme involved disguising personal luxuries – such as a $145,000 Rolex watch and a $102,000 Cartier diamond necklace – as business expenses. “Wealthy tax cheats cannot be allowed to line their pockets at the expense of hardworking American taxpayers,” U.S. Attorney Mike Easley said in a prepared statement following the plea. Filings submitted to the court show Harrison, the former chief financial officer and majority owner of Ebenconcepts, an insurance and human resources benefits business in […]
