American Airlines cuts almost 50,000 flights from summer schedule

American Airlines Group Inc. cut almost 50,000 from its summer schedule as the carrier continues to restrain capacity growth amid an ongoing pilot shortage. The Fort Worth-based carrier reduced its schedule by 5% and will now fly 875,133 flights from May to September, according to aviation data company Cirium. American’s schedule includes 875,133 flights from May to September. The bulk of the cuts occur in June and July, when slashed 19,887 flights and 19,920 flights, respectively. American spokeswoman Andrea Koos said the adjustments to the summer schedule are "in line" with the carrier’s approach to network and schedule planning. American publishes a placeholder schedule 331 days in advance and then makes cuts closer in based on the schedule it intends to operate. “We are now publishing our final schedule approximately 100 days in advance, which is in line with how we adjusted our schedule in 2019 prior to the pandemic," Koos said. "American is proud to offer customers the largest network of any U.S. airline through the summer, with, on average, more than 5,500 daily departures." Customers whose flights may have changed as a result of future schedule changes will have alternate travel options that get them to their […]

Bill Gates, at one point, surmised as much as half of business travel demand was permanently killed during the early months of the pandemic. Hotel industry chatter in recent months focused on the idea it was likely 20% off pre-pandemic levels . However, the CEOs of each of the major publicly traded hotel groups in recent weeks reported a rosy picture of business travel. Keith Barr, the CEO of Holiday Inn and InterContinental owner IHG Hotels & Resorts, delivered one of the strongest cases for a full business travel demand recovery Tuesday. Average nightly rates for business travelers already exceed 2019 levels (and they have since March of last year). Occupancy rates for this demand sector are at 98% of 2019 levels, Barr said. “Despite some predictions, business travel is alive and well,” he added. For comparison: Marriott last week […]

NJ corporate business tax brings in $664M and should be kept, analysts say

NJ corporate business tax brings in $664M and should be kept, analysts say

More than half a billion dollars could be taken from state coffers if the state’s corporate business tax is allowed to expire at year’s end, fattening the bottom line of already profitable businesses and taking needed money from programs that benefit the average citizen, left-leaning think tank New Jersey Policy Perspective said in a new report. Released Wednesday, the report suggests that allowing the tax to lapse would cost the state “at least $664 million in annual revenue” and only benefits a “select few highly profitable corporations, providing an average tax cut of $5 million to companies with more than $100 million in annual profits.” The report estimates that roughly 70 percent of the corporate tax cut would go to businesses with more than $10 million in annual profits and corporations with more than $100 million in profits would receive the largest tax cut, averaging $4,952,000. While this is something that the group is advocating for, Gov. Phil Murphy has already said that he intends to let the so-called corporate millionaire’s tax expire at the end of the year. That shouldn’t come as a shock though. When Murphy and lawmakers implemented the increase on the corporate business tax in […]

SIU business prof: AI as a tool for hiring, layoffs can be wonderful or dangerous

Jim Nelson in front of a Smartboard CARBONDALE, Ill. — Could your job hinge on decisions made via the use of artificial intelligence? Recent polls indicate that may be the case. Jim Nelson , Rehn Professor of Business Analytics, coordinator of the analytics program in Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s College of Business and Analytics and the director of its Pontikes Center for Advanced Analytics and Artificial Intelligence , says managers need to be careful using AI and big data in making layoff and hiring decisions. “Artificial intelligence is a wonderful tool, and like any tool, it can be dangerous when not used properly,” said Nelson, who can be reached at nelson.j@business.siu.edu . “It’s only as good as the questions put to it and the data used to train it. Bad data inevitably leads to bad results. It’s great at giving recommendations using, if allowed, vast amounts of big data – far more than humans alone can possibly process. But the output still needs the ‘human touch’ to make sure something important hasn’t been left out of the decision-making process.” Nelson has more than 30 years of teaching and research in the field of analytics and artificial intelligence coupled with […]
