Polycrisis, Antifragility, and What’s Missing from Digital Transformation

Polycrisis, Antifragility, and What’s Missing from Digital Transformation

Feeling overwhelmed by the persistence and prevalence of crisis? There’s a new word for this current state: polycrisis . Wishing your supply chain were strengthened rather than strangled under these conditions? There’s an older term now being applied to supply chains for this capacity: antifragility. Are you trying to figure out how NOT to join the 70% who fail at digital transformation? There are a couple of decades-old concepts that are the missing ingredients for success: people and process. As much as we conflate digital transformation with technology, without these missing ingredients your initiative will fail. And the true secret sauce to excellence is to fold in systems thinking and organizational learning. “Polycrisis” was the talk of Davos at the recent meeting of the World Economic Forum, which defines it as “…a term used to describe the current global situation, where multiple complex, interconnected crises are occurring simultaneously.” Our abundance of serious threats may be one reason for the buzz around another term coined almost a decade ago by Nassim Taleb, antifragility : “The resilient resists shocks and stays the same; the antifragile gets better.” While the concept isn’t new, its application to supply chain is emerging, albeit without […]

The 'Build Versus Buy' Dilemma For Healthcare Digital Transformation

The ‘Build Versus Buy’ Dilemma For Healthcare Digital Transformation

getty One of the foundational challenges when adopting digital healthcare technologies is whether to build a custom solution to fulfill a specific need or to buy an existing product that can be adapted as a turnkey solution. Healthcare leaders driving digital innovation must be responsible for fiscally sound results, and a myriad of factors go into making the build-versus-buy decision. Two of the prime factors, for example, are time-to-market and economics. While these can be interdependent, let’s look at each. The Intent With digital transformation projects, there are multiple challenges to overcome—such as examining the cost of research and development, licensing fees, total investment costs, etc.—before making revenue. If the goal is to develop a digital biomarker or algorithm for respiratory disease detection, a company must find a sensor and then complete the sensor integration, management and signal processing. With all of the considerations that must go into digital healthcare innovation, companies are essentially left with three options: 1. License a software platform from an existing source. 2. Build a platform using internal resources. 3. Outsource software development to a third-party software development company to build according to your specifications. The third option has been more popular but can […]

4 types of employee reactions to a digital transformation

4 types of employee reactions to a digital transformation

Although digital transformation can help companies gain a competitive advantage, CIOs must pay attention to the human aspect of the project — or risk failure. Employees play a key role in an organization’s digital transformation. But they may find the required changes intimidating or overwhelming. Digital transformations push people out of their comfort zone. For example, employees may need to work twice as hard to succeed, especially if they must reskill or upskill . That’s why IT leaders must recognize the various employee reactions to a digital transformation initiative. Employees have many ways of responding to the changes digital transformation requires of them, but typically, four broad camps emerge, according to Isaac Sacolick in his book Digital Trailblazer: Essential Lessons to Jumpstart Transformation and Accelerate Your Technology Leadership . These include the following: early adopters who believe in transformational change; opportunists who don’t get involved until leadership explains what’s in it for them; employees who resist the disruptions and look for jobs elsewhere; and detractors who prefer the status quo. Since employee commitment is crucial to the success of a digital transformation, IT leaders need to create a culture that supports digital transformation . Engaging with different groups, understanding […]

The farm bill is a powerful opportunity for agricultural climate solutions

The farm bill is a powerful opportunity for agricultural climate solutions

U.S. farmers, ranchers and foresters will need additional tools and resources to protect their land, keep growing food on a changing planet and contribute to national efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. That’s where the farm bill comes in. The farm bill is a critical piece of legislation that comes up every five years. It authorizes programs that provide producers with a safety net in tough times and supports them in adopting climate-friendly production practices. As Congress begins writing the next farm bill, new recommendations from the Food and Agriculture Climate Alliance provide some of the most significant alignment on climate and agriculture policy priorities to date. In 2020, EDF joined with the agriculture community to form an alliance with the idea that if we worked together to truly understand each other’s needs, we might end up with commonsense reforms that will be embraced by farmers and ranchers, while also improving environmental performance, especially on climate. The alliance’s recommendations aim to improve the ability of the U.S. agriculture and forestry sectors to mitigate climate and help limit temperature increases. And because warming is already here and making farming riskier, the recommendations also aim to improve resilience to a changing […]
