You Can’t Embrace Your Biggest Opportunity Because You Can’t See It

The missing link getty Do you know where clarity is and isn’t in your organization? After several decades of quality initiatives, lean manufacturing, lean thinking, six sigma—coupled with economic uncertainty, and competitive pressure—I guarantee that the greatest clarity in your organization can be found in your production processes. For manufacturers, your production processes are the processes that receive raw materials and parts, turn them into finished goods, and ship them out the door. For software developers, your production processes include collecting requirements, developing a design, coding, testing, and installing the software. For service organizations, your production processes are the processes essential for delivering your services. A bank takes in mortgage applications and transforms them into loans. A moving company packs, loads, transports, and delivers. A restaurant turns menu items into delicious meals. These are the processes that have been carefully mapped and streamlined. Any organization that has taken those various quality initiatives seriously now has well-defined, lean, repeatable, and efficient production processes. Employees involved in those processes know exactly what they are trying to accomplish, how, how well, and with whom, and they are given the necessary resources and opportunity to focus on the tasks at hand. Executives and […]

Wood Pellets are the New High Dividend Opportunity: Enviva is the Way to Invest

Thomas Meth, President, Chief Executive Officer, and co-founder, Enviva Inc. (NYSE:EVA) The international trade in wood pellets are the fastest growing alternative energy export from the USA to the European Union. According to the US International Trade Commission , “the growth in wood pellet consumption has been heavily influenced by the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED) requirements1 and the EU’s decision to designate biomass as a low-carbon renewable energy.” The immediate question is — how can investors make money from wood pellets, this little understood alternative energy source? Thomas Meth , the President, Chief Executive Officer, and a co-founder of Enviva Inc. (NYSE:EVA) has the answer to this provocative question. He is the wood pellet CEO. “Enviva is the largest wood pellet manufacturer in the world. We have a capacity of 6.2 million tons. We take a very heterogeneous, fragmented, renewable natural resource in the form of woody biomass and turn it into a commodity, a biomass fuel that can replace fossil fuels, such as gas, coal and oil across the world.” In his recent 2,409 word interview , exclusively with the Wall Street Transcript, wood pellet maestro Meth pulls no punches. “We make this product transportable and cost […]

(Genya Savilov / AFP via Getty Images) As unbelievable as it might sound, the invasion under which millions of Ukrainians are suffering right now will likely not be the end of their hardship. That’s because of the hand-rubbing that’s been happening the past few months over the potential business bonanza to be found in the country’s postwar reconstruction. In November last year, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky signed a memorandum of understanding with BlackRock that will see the firm’s Financial Markets Advisory (FMA) — a special consulting unit set up after the 2008 crash to work with crisis-stricken governments — advise Ukraine’s economic ministry on designing a road map for rebuilding the war-torn country. In BlackRock’s words , the agreement has the “goal of creating opportunities for both public and private investors to participate in the future reconstruction and recovery of the Ukrainian economy.” Ukrainian officials have been more blunt, with the ministry’s press release saying it would “primarily attract private capital.” The agreement formalizes a set of September 2022 talks between Zelensky and BlackRock […]

3 Obscure Business Storytelling Books Every Leader Should Read Now

These must-read books show how stories not only enable us to share information in a memorable way, … [+] getty For some time now, storytelling has been understood as a powerful leadership tool. When storytelling is promoted in a business setting, the main benefit ascribed to it is its potential to give an audience information in a quick and memorable way. As neuroscientist Paul Zak’s studies have demonstrated, stories give audiences “better understanding of the key points a speaker wishes to make and enable better recall of these points weeks later.” However, storytelling has the potential to have an even greater impact. Since COVID, we have seen an increasing appetite for personal narratives and for taking a human-centered approach to organizational structures. As the popularity of Brene Brown’s leadership text Daring Greatly bears witness to: human connection is a vital ingredient for personal and professional thriving. Brown explains, “Connection is why we’re here… it’s what gives purpose and meaning to our lives.” It is a culture of storytelling that can drive this kind of connection that focuses on purpose and meaning. The three books on this must-read list below are for leaders who want to understand the full potential […]

When Russia annexed Crimea and stoked a conflict in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region in 2014, Ukraine’s military was in poor condition, with only 6,000 combat-ready troops out of a 140,000-strong force. In the years that followed, Ukraine’s military underwent a period of preparation that helped it blunt the full-scale invasion that Russia launched in February 2022. According to a report by the Royal United Services Institute assessing the first five months of the war, decisions made by Kyiv during those years modernized its hardware and enabled its troops […]

Both State Farm and Progressive confirmed with CNN that they no longer write policies for some Kia and Hyundai models manufactured between 2015-2019. "Find something else to do, get a job," Azaela Wilburg says about the people who have stolen her car 3 times. Many of the thieves call themselves the "Kia Boyz," posting videos of themselves hot-wiring cars online. In September 2022, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety , or IHHS, and Highway Loss Data Institute reported that vehicle theft claims for 2015-19 Hyundai and Kia vehicles were nearly twice as common as the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat. "Car theft spiked during the pandemic," HLDI Senior Vice President Matt Moore said in the report. "These numbers tell us that some vehicles may be targeted because they’re fast or worth a lot of money, and others because they’re easy to steal." The report also noted that the Hyundai and Kia vehicles being […]
