Loyola celebrates approval of York Corridor Business Improvement District

Intersection of York Road and E Belvedere Avenue Commercial property owners voted to approve the York Corridor Business Improvement District (BID) , a community advocacy and improvement organization intended to provide services that ensure a clean, green, and vibrant corridor. Loyola University Maryland was one of the entities associated with the BID when it was first proposed and has long supported the proposal. “This vote is an important step forward for our community, and our community partners have worked hard to bring this to fruition,” said Terrence M. Sawyer, J.D., president of Loyola, who has been involved in working toward the BID during his 24-year career at the University. “Loyola is proud to work alongside our neighbors in investing in this part of our city that we call home.” Creating the BID was a key recommendation of the 2015 York Road Commercial Corridor Vision and Action Plan , which the York Road Initiative helped shape. “The creation of a York Road BID is a culmination of years of hard work from a broad coalition of community leaders,” said Gia Grier McGinnis, Dr.PH., executive director of the Center for Community, Service, and Justice and York Road Initiative. “For Loyola, a […]

Trying to Jumpstart Your Business Success? Master the Ability to Pivot.

A wide intellectual range of motion enables an entrepreneur to turn an idea into a revenue growth opportunity. Business plans are like mining for gold. Miners had to start with only an educated guess on an area, canvas a stream, then pan and sift endless piles of dirt. Prospecting is largely gone, but it’s a useful metaphor for how business leaders take a problem, solve it, refine it and continually revisit and adapt — even to the point of tearing down the essential points of their business. This ability is called "intellectual range of motion," and it’s one of a business leader’s most important tools — especially if you’re selling your expertise. Peloton, for example, continues to display this intellectual range of motion. While it had a few pain points — lower subscription growth, stock redemption issues and a wave of layoffs — Peloton shows a willingness to explore and change direction. Today, Peloton has 5 million customers and is worth $3 billion. However, despite significant brand equity, Peloton is substantially changing its business model. The company is muddying the waters of the service-based business vs. product business dynamic and rolling out a "Fitness as a Service" product where […]

J.M. Smucker CEO: PB&J is our ‘bread & butter’; Uncrustables business grows 38%

Peanut butter and jelly is still top of mind for J.M. Smucker ( SJM ). CEO Mark Smucker called the sweet and savory duo the company’s "bread and butter," especially after Uncrustables and fruit spreads drove sales last quarter. Net sales for the U.S. consumer foods business saw a 9% jump to $434.2 million, driven by Smucker’s Uncrustables frozen sandwiches, up 38%, and Smucker’s fruit spreads, up 12%, in the company’s fiscal-third quarter results. Stay ahead of the market Now as it looks to make Uncrustables a $1 billion brand, it’s doubling down on the classic combo. "We are going to continue to push that, we just expanded our second facility in Colorado, which is producing more sandwiches, and then building a third plant in Alabama, that is really going to meet the demand that we’re seeing across the entire market," Smucker said. As the company looks to reach that billion-dollar valuation, it is expanding innovation under the brand. In September, it introduced Uncrustables Meat and Cheese Bites with two options, uncured ham and cheddar and turkey and colby jack. The following November, Smucker told Yahoo Finance the additions have "actually done very well," though called it a relatively […]

New data regulations from the European Union require organizational attention, and three key steps can help navigate the data privacy landscape. Sale of Uno pizza line adds toppings to buyer’s business

Provided An Uno deep-dish pizza. A slice of the Uno deep-dish pizza empire has been sold to Great Kitchens Food, a company with operations in Romeoville and Chicago Heights. The company Tuesday acquired the frozen and refrigerated branded pizzas and other products of Uno Foods, said Henk Hartong, chairman and CEO of Brynwood Partners. Brynwood owns Great Kitchens. “Demand for frozen pizzas has never been higher,” Hartong said. “We’re delighted to own such an iconic brand.” Terms were not disclosed. The sale does not include the original Pizzeria Uno restaurant at 29 E. Ohio St., celebrated for inventing deep-dish pizza in 1943, or other company-owned or franchised eateries. Those remain with Uno Restaurant Holdings, owned by Newport Global Advisors. Hartong said the frozen pizzas are made in Brockton, Massachusetts, where about 80 people work. “Our plan is to invest in that business” and possibly increase jobs there, he said. He said the new brand also could lead to more production and jobs at Great Kitchens locations in the Chicago area. He said the Romeoville headquarters and factory employ about 720, with another 80 in Chicago Heights. Great Kitchens makes private-label pizzas for grocery chains, warehouse clubs and other retailers. […]
