How Vodafone is Transforming its Data Centre Infrastructure

Paul Greenley explains how Vodafone’s data centre modernisation strategy will enable high-performance computing, whilst maximising legacy infrastructure Vodafone has been aiming to overhaul its global data centre strategy in recent months. In 2024, the company announced it would be investing US$1.5bn over the next 10 years to accelerate digital transformation and efficiencies in data centre migration. As the data centre market continues to expand in line with swelling AI and cloud computing demands, business leaders like Vodafone have had to keep pace with innovation and the importance of scalable data infrastructure. Data centres are at a critical juncture, given the AI/sustainability paradox. Having been at Vodafone for 12 years, Paul Greenley, Vodafone’s Senior Principal Manager DC Infrastructure & Facilities, has helped the company make a lot of changes inside its data centres. “We have large data centres in Ireland, Italy, Germany, and the UK,” Paul explains. “Around these group data centres, we have what we call satellite data centres. These are smaller facilities that still adhere to group standards but are run by local markets.” He adds: “Our transformation has been driven by on-premises solutions for different Vodafone programmes. A report from Zoho found as many as two in five (39%) US organizations are still only in the early stages of transformation, with the whole country ranking 1.2 percentage points beneath the global average in terms of transformation maturity. Advertisement The slow progress is being blamed on security weaknesses and delayed tool adoption, with only 15% of workers feeling that workplace tools meet their expectations – with separate WalkMe research finding only 28% of employees feel adequately trained. US digital transformation is lagging Zoho noted progressing from Level 2 (standardization) to Level 3 (structured operations) could take between three and five years, coming at the cost of $250-500 per employee annually. Reaching Level 4 (optimized digital operations) requires around twice the resources – 10 or more years and $500-1,000 per employee each year. […]

Beyond Lean — The Blueprint For A Digital-Driven Manufacturing Revolution

A Conversation With Natan Linder And Enno De Boer Manufacturing continues to stand as one of the final frontiers to digital transformation. We are now a decade into Industry 4.0, and all of us can agree that it’s been an exhilarating ten years. Technologies like GenAI, cloud computing, and IoT have created new opportunities to tackle old challenges. New tools are proliferating to address every kind of problem on the shop floor. We have reams of data about every aspect of our operations. The pandemic deepened the urgency around digital manufacturing: resources have poured into this domain , and some of the smartest minds in the world are applying themselves to these problems. The location strategy behind digital transformation

The location strategy behind digital transformation

Esri Australia Senior Consultant Elleni Rogers presenting at GeoSync. Image: Esri Australia For many years now, I’ve navigated the complexities of digital transformation within the water utility industry, first in the UK and now Australia. I’ve witnessed first-hand the value of data and technology in the planning, building, and operating lifecycle of water networks. I’ve also observed projects that invested significant time, money, and resources, only to fall short of their intended impact. While the promise of improved productivity, safety, compliance, and risk reduction is enticing, the reality of achieving sustainable digital transformation is challenging. Utilities grapple with aging infrastructure, budgetary constraints, an ever-changing regulatory landscape, and heightened public expectations. The allure of simply keeping the lights on and resources flowing – or maintaining the status quo – is understandable. However, no business can afford to stagnate, or worse, wait for a catastrophic event to act. Balancing the cost of future infrastructure investment Water utilities face a critical dilemma: balancing the upkeep of ageing assets with investments in resilient, future-proof infrastructure. With Australia predicted to face high water stress by 2050, even in optimistic climate warming scenarios, addressing integrated water cycle management in a highly unpredictable environment is a […]
