Most business leaders think their digital transformation efforts are failing and directionless

Microsoft found that 89% of employees believe that artificial intelligence (AI) could automate at least a quarter of their daily tasks, and that they find work more fulfilling when using AI technology. In cases where they have machine assistance, simple tasks can be automated giving them more time to work on other more pressing jobs. Despite the help AI can offer, 78% of workers still expressed concern about the growing presence of the technology in the workplace. The tech giant also said that the study shows there’s a need to democratise access to digital tools in UK businesses. 71% of workers want more access to low-code and no-code development technology to reduce reliance on outside help to create the tools their department needs. Meanwhile, 74% expressed frustration that they weren’t able to implement their own digital solutions due to their company’s policies. “The digital revolution in UK business will not be top-down – it will start from the ground up. Business leaders should place their employees at the heart of digital transformation,” said Rob Smithson, business applications lead at Microsoft UK. Does digital transformation hold the answer to improving patient outcomes?

Does digital transformation hold the answer to improving patient outcomes?

At HSJ ’s recent Digital Transformation Summit, board representatives from ICS and provider organisations came together to debate the most pressing issues confronting digital health leaders The potential for digital transformation in healthcare has been the focus of several strategies and frameworks outlined by central NHS bodies. It is now seen as a key driver in enabling improved patient outcomes. However, the prospect of a system-wide scale up of digital maturity comes with challenges, at both local and national level. One such challenge stems from a lack of the interoperability needed to support digital transformation. Sponsored by In order to enhance patient care through digital transformation, healthcare providers need to be able to exchange vital patient information between relevant systems and to necessary teams when required. However, many providers are often limited by systems that are unable to share data within a single hospital or wider NHS trust, let alone across an integrated care system or a national database. This is where data standards demonstrate their value. A plan for interoperability By adopting data standards – such as GS1 standards – information can be captured in one format so it can be easily shared and recognised by other systems. […]

Don’t let NetOps “gotchas” derail your digital transformation

Don’t let NetOps “gotchas” derail your digital transformation

Digital transformation demands can make NetOps difficult to manage. Here’s how successful NetOps teams are maintaining control and meeting expectations. Credit: Broadcom Over the past few years, technological and business advancements have created increasingly grand expectations. Your customers expect an “always on” experience. (Today, you can also add “always fast,” “always intuitive,” “always successful,” and so on.) Fundamentally, if customers find it too difficult to engage digitally with your business, they’ll engage elsewhere. Digital transformation: The implications for network operations Meeting heightened customer expectations is basically what digital transformation is all about. In the race to meet these expectations, speed innovation, and stay competitive, organizations continue to adopt transformational technologies and services, such as cloud offerings, SaaS, SD-WAN, and more. However, by adopting these approaches, network operations (NetOps) teams have to contend with some fundamentally different requirements and challenges. In the past, organizations like yours had data centers and remote offices, which were all connected via a network your teams owned and managed. Your NetOps teams had full visibility and control; they knew every packet, route, and device on the network. Today, your NetOps teams are contending with a completely different paradigm. Now, critical services are fundamentally reliant upon […]

The Unique Device Identifier: A Unique Opportunity

The Unique Device Identifier: A Unique Opportunity

A Unique Device Identifier (UDI) is an individualized alphanumeric signature associated with a single medical device. Since 2013, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has mandated the placement of UDIs on Class II and III medical devices. As only a few institutions are actually tracking UDIs, their tremendous potential to transform patient care, quality, safety, and research remains largely unrealized. In this article, we propose that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) mandate inclusion of a UDI in billing claims so that hospitals are incentivized to build UDI capture systems. We further highlight five key areas in which this data capture will transform surgery: (1) improving quality and safety, (2) facilitating collection of real-world evidence, (3) ensuring price transparency, (4) promoting health equity, and (5) improving outcomes research. The Landscape In 2013, the FDA mandated that medical device manufacturers assign a UDI to each device. The UDI is a numeric or alphanumeric code printed onto the device packaging. Each UDI contains two components: the device identifier (DI) and the production identifier (PI). The UDI not only allows one device to be distinguished from another (through the DI) but also provides clear information on when the device was […]

The pandemic exposed gender inequality: Let’s seize the opportunity to remedy it

The pandemic exposed gender inequality: Let’s seize the opportunity to remedy it

While COVID-19 affected everyone, it did not impact everyone equally. Some, like women, were hit harder than others. This year, we are commemorating International Women’s Day alongside the three-year anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic. While COVID-19 affected everyone, it did not affect everyone equally . The pandemic exposed many aspects of inequality , including socioeconomic inequality, accessibility and gender inequality. The pandemic destroyed the momentum towards more emancipatory gender relations by disproportionately harming women and gender diverse people, according to the United Nations and Canadian Human Rights Commission . As the world reopens after the global catastrophe, I join in on the urgent call to reset “normal” in a more emancipatory way. There is an opportunity to capitalize on the potential offered by the pandemic to rebuild our professional, business and personal lives. To echo Winston Churchill’s words from the Second World War : we cannot “let a good crisis go to waste.” We will waste the COVID-19 crisis if we don’t address the inequalities — specifically the gender inequalities — the pandemic both exacerbated and revealed. Burden of unpaid labour Women do an unequal share of unpaid labour in Canada , as they do around the world . […]
