The College of Innovation & Design and the Center for Entrepreneurship have named Lance Minor as the new director of the Kansas Family Business Forum. With almost 260,000 small businesses in the state of Kansas, a large portion of those are family-owned, and all of them play an important role in driving economic impact, locally and regionally. The KFBF has been supporting and promoting family-owned businesses for more than 27 years. Companies such as Star Lumber and JR Custom Metals are founding members, with three generations of business leaders participating in the KFBF programs. As director, Minor envisions a deliberate growth strategy to increase KFBF’s local presence, expand membership, and deliver valuable and timely programming for the family-led businesses in our community, regardless of the stage of growth they are in. His first day was Jan. 9, and he hit the ground running, welcoming the newest member to KFBF: Don Klausmeyer Construction. Minor is no stranger to campus, before joining the College of Innovation & Design, he was an ecosystem and alliance manager for Deloitte’s Smart Factory @ Wichita on the WSU Innovation Campus. Prior to that, he was a partnership manager for the Shocker Career Accelerator, as well […]

By Rieva Lesonsky The pandemic-induced surge in online shopping changed how consumers discover the products they want … [+] getty It’s increasingly challenging for small businesses to keep up with consumer demands. Pre- and post-pandemic habits have merged, creating new consumer behaviors. I hesitate to call it “the new normal” because I’m not sure how many of these activities are entrenched since many consumers seem ready to pivot at any point. But small business owners need to pivot as well and stay alert to the changing consumer retail buying patterns. Click-and-collect There’s no question that the retail industry is at the center of the marriage of the new and old. During the pandemic, consumers flocked to online stores, including millions of baby boomers who previously were loyal in-store shoppers. Today, 92% of baby boomers shop online , and according to MIVA are buying everything from health and personal care products to electronics, home, and gardening goods. Fueled by the pandemic— boomers increased their online spending by nearly 50% in 2020 alone, according to NPD Group’s Checkout Tracking. And according to Statista, almost 90% of boomers planned to shop on Amazon this past holiday season. In-store retailers that added “click-and-collect” […]

Gig Workers Denied Equal Opportunity to Financial Services – A Cue for Change
Gig workers are a rapidly growing population, and this growth has been amplified with the cost-of-living crisis which has forced 5.2m workers to take on extra jobs. From delivering takeout in the evenings, providing a taxi service or freelancing, this group of employees are combating the stresses of the cost-of-living crisis with additional work. In addition, with the rise of the creator economy and gig platforms, there are so many options for people who wish to have a varied career. People either have the freedom to be a sole trader or specialise in more than one profession at a time. The opportunities are endless, and therefore people’s source of income is increasingly diversifying. There are several benefits of having a diversified income. Prioritize the opportunity for ownership of an ASC
The U.S. health care system is in turmoil. Increasing costs, loss of margins, inflation, supply and staff shortages and burnout are among the challenges. For many physicians, the complexity and uncertainly encourage employment in large systems to buffer the variable risk. According to Physicians Advocacy Institute, more than half of all physicians are employed by a health care system or hospital and many others are employed by corporate entities. Most of today’s graduating residents will be employed physicians for their entire career. Physicians have expressed their perception that their identities as employed doctors within larger groups or health care systems has been reduced to the level of a “widget,” a simple component that can be easily replaced or interchanged. Continued growth Many systems emphasize the health care entity or corporate enterprise as the center of patient care, as if the building provides the care. This often restricts or strongly discourages employed physicians from promoting their unique expertise. Presumably, there could be a fear that physicians may become more than “widgets,” with special skills that cannot be easily replaced despite value to the health care system and patients. Most concerning may be when a group of physicians creates market-separating programs […]
DSM gets FDA approval for infant formula ingredient
Photo: ©AFRICA STUDIO – STOCK.ADOBE.COM KAISERAUGST, SWITZERLAND — Royal DSM has secured US Food and Drug Administration approval for its newly developed infant nutrition ingredient. The human milk oligosaccharide (HMO) ingredient allows DSM to infuse nutritional formulas with the same immune and bacterial benefits provided by naturally occurring HMOs in breast milk. “HMOs are a powerful emerging ingredient capturing increasing attention across the health and nutrition space — especially in the infant nutrition market,” said Christoph Röhrig, head of HMO regulatory at DSM. “The discoveries have been incredibly positive so far, but there is still a lot to be uncovered regarding the potential health benefits and applications of HMOs — which is extremely exciting. Consequently, it’s anticipated that HMO solutions will continue to breakthrough onto the market as the industry learns more about the role these ingredients play in human health.” Now Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) for several early life nutritional applications, the company’s 3-fucosyllactose (FL) HMO, marketed as Glycare 3FL 9000, will be able to provide formula-fed infants with nutrients that are more comparable to the natural alternative. In addition to the FDA approval, Glycare 3FL received approval for use in dietary supplements in Australia. “3-FL is […]

The world’s biggest food company says prices will rise further this year
London CNN — Nestlé, the world’s largest food group, says the price of staple items will rise further this year, adding to a string of warnings from consumer giants of more pain to come for stretched households . The maker of Nescafé coffee and KitKat chocolate bars increased prices by 8.2% in 2022, but said this was not enough to offset a rise in its own costs, which had dented its profits. “We are still in a situation where we’re repairing our gross margin and, like all the consumers around the world, we’ve been hit by inflation and now we’re trying to repair the damage that has been done,” Nestlé CEO Mark Schneider said on a call with reporters Thursday. Price increases will be “very targeted” and only implemented where “input cost inflation justifies that,” Schneider added, although he declined to say which of the company’s 2,000 brands, which span frozen food, confectionery and baby formula, would be affected. Unilever (UL) , Coca-Cola (KO) , brewer Heineken (HEINY) , Colgate (CL) -Palmolive and Procter & Gamble (PG) , which makes Pampers nappies and Pantene shampoo, have all flagged further increases in the prices of their goods this year, as […]
New Albany looks to rezone, annex another 200 acres into business park
New Albany International Business Park could expand yet again if the city approves a rezoning request from its most prominent developer. MBJ Holdings LLC, an affiliate of the New Albany Co., is requesting to rezone 196 acres from agricultural to limited general employment (L-GE). The site, which consists of eight parcels on the west side of Beech Road, is in the process of being annexed into the city from Jersey Township. The annexation petition was submitted Dec. 30, and is scheduled for a first reading at a New Albany City Council meeting on March 7. If approved, the property would be known as the Northeast Business Park Zoning District. The proposed rezoning serves as an expansion of New Albany International Business Park, according to city documents. The site is today home to farm fields and residential homes, according to city documents, which list the addresses as 3711, 3555, 3525, 3287 and 3453 Beech Road NW. Three other parcels do not have an address. Rezoning the site to L-GE would limit the type of uses on the property. These potential uses would include manufacturing and production, general office activities, warehouse and distribution, data centers, and research and production. Conditional uses […]
