Digital transformation key to the success of local SMEs
Our small businesses are set for a doom loop if we can’t expand the benefits of digitisation. More than 50 years on from some of the world’s coolest computing milestones and over 50 per cent of African small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are still not using a digital business tool. In a 2020 study by African Banker and banking platform Backbase, digital transformation is imperative in every aspect of the business — from customer attendance to internal operations. And for SMEs to be the engines of inclusive growth, we need to rethink their development strategies that put digitisation at the centre of reforms. Studies show that digital business tools are fundamental to SME growth. They make you more efficient, productive, and innovative. They are also the only way you can reliably reach a marketplace beyond your hood. The year 1972 was monumental for us techies. It was the year that saw the launches of the C programming language, floppy disks, the first scientific pocket calculator, the first international advanced Research Projects Agency Network connections and the seminal video game, Pong. It reminds us that the digital age is entering middle age. As computing capabilities increased and the Internet came […]

India has set a precedence for other countries in digital transformation: BFSI being the torchbearer
Srinivasan Venkatraman India is one of the largest democracies in the world and the scale and speed at which digitization has proliferated the economy over the past few years has put India at the center-stage in the world of digital transformation. While every segment of the economy has embraced digital transformation through deployment of new technologies, the Central Government departments and the Ministry of Finance have made tremendous efforts in aiding this digitization drive to create significant efficiencies and reduced turnaround times (TAT) for all critical services. eGovernance, Digital Tax Filing, eProcurement, and the ability to process a high volume of tax refunds in days, speaks of the healthy progress made in India for empowering citizens and businesses. The trickledown effect of digital transformation can also be seen in the State Governments which are aggressively implementing technologies to streamline their services. From eOffice initiatives to efficient citizen services, adoption of automation and effective electronic signatures and workflow solutions have certainly led to ease of doing business and improved operational efficiencies. According to an IDC report dated December 2022, the digital transformation (DX) spending in India is likely to reach $85 billion by 2026, as firms in the country aim […]

The intrinsic value of LUMN The company also provides fiber infrastructure services, comprising high bandwidth optical wavelength networks and unlit optical fiber. Nevada’s vast lithium deposits offer economic opportunity, difficult decisions
Albemarle Lithium Operations in Silver Peak, Nev. on Oct. 6, 2022. (David Calvert/The Nevada Independent) Nevada, as with other arid parts of the globe such as Chile and Argentina, is awash with lithium. The soft, silvery white mineral is in high demand as a key component of batteries used to power electric vehicles in the transition away from fossil fuel-based economies. For years, state officials have positioned Nevada as the central node in the domestic lithium supply chain, a place to extract, recycle and market the metal. But the new increasing demand — how it plays out and where mining is permitted — could have major consequences for local communities, the environment, public land and the management of a critical resource: water. The so-called “lithium rush” is on in Nevada, but it could take years to sort through the often conflicting issues. “There really isn’t a rush,” said Mike Visher, who leads the Nevada Division of Minerals, when asked about bringing more mines online. “These projects generally take more than a decade.” Companies face extensive permitting requirements, and regulators are being forced to confront difficult decisions about what to prioritize amid intense pressure from investors and the public. Lithium […]

Welcome to The Interchange ! If you received this in your inbox, thank you for signing up and your vote of confidence. If you’re reading this as a post on our site, sign up here so you can receive it directly in the future. Every week, I’ll take a look at the hottest fintech news of the previous week. This will include everything from funding rounds to trends to an analysis of a particular space to hot takes on a particular company or phenomenon. There’s a lot of fintech news out there and it’s my job to stay on top of it — and make sense of it — so you can stay in the know. — Mary Ann Now hiring Hello, hello! I’m feeling good this week because I finally kicked off something that has been in the works for a little while: tracking fintech companies that are hiring . It’s not fun covering layoffs, and unfortunately we’ve had too many of those. So I thought by also shining a spotlight on fintechs that are hiring rather than firing, our coverage would be a bit more balanced and give laid-off workers (and anyone else generally looking!) a way […]
Tech Opportunities In Climate Change And An Aging Population
GLYN KIRK/AFP via Getty Images AFP via Getty Images Tech opportunities in areas like 5-G, cloud computing, healthcare, and finance took up the last posting . This one examines opportunities in meeting two huge issues facing the world’s economies: the growing number of older retirees in populations and the big kahuna of climate change. Seldom do all the answers to these or any other problems lie in technological solutions, but tech certainly will have a role to play and a prominent one. The growing proportion of older people in the population has reached historical proportions, in the United States and throughout the developed world, including China. Increasingly, it will impose on economies. Because birth rates in the developed world have remained low for such a long time, Europe, Japan, China, and the United States have a dearth of young workers to replace the large and now retiring baby-boom generation. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the proportion of this country’s population of retirement age has expanded from 9.4 percent in 1960 to 17 percent in the 2020 census. Not all of those over 65 have left off working, but the Bureau reports that the country now has under 4 […]

MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — After the relentless January storms, many businesses on Cooper Avenue in Merced are back on their feet but, still picking up the pieces. Clear Choice Custodial Services employees were still cleaning nearly five weeks after the storms. The offices and warehouses had three feet of flood water. The general manager Jack Mobley says despite the damage, the high waters did not impact business operations. "You can’t stop and cry about it, you just have to put one foot in front of the other and go on," Mobley says. On Friday, the U.S. Small Business Administration opened its Business Recovery Center at the Downtown Campus Center in Merced. Providing a range of services to not only businesses impacted by the winter storms, but also homeowners and renters who declared disasters. "If you don’t have that I can understand maybe having to lean on the SBA or FEMA but then you got money that you have to pay […]
