Free bus rides provide New Kensington, Arnold residents grocery shopping opportunity
Marion Marty of the Allegheny-Kiski Health Foundation helps New Kensington and Arnold residents disembark from a bus Wednesday at the Pittsburgh Mills complex in Frazer. The foundation offers the transportation service twice a month. Growing up in New Kensington in the 1950s and ’60s, Joan Smith said there was a variety of grocery stores, most within walking distance, no matter which section of town you lived in. “There was IGA and Gold Circle, and even at Kmart you could get some stuff,” Smith said. That is no longer the case for people who live in downtown New Kensington and Arnold. A resident of Arnold Towers, Smith said grocery stores are out of reach for people without a vehicle after the Shop ’n Save in Central City Plaza, easily accessed by people in The Flats, closed its doors in 2020. “There’s nowhere for us to even try to walk to, except little places,” Smith said. “You can’t be paying an arm and a leg every week.” A grocery shopping program sponsored by Harrison-based Allegheny-Kiski Health Foundation aims to alleviate the struggle. The group pays $11,000 a year to Valley Lines in Slate Lick to pick up shoppers from four sites […]

Cities have enough on plates, don’t need utility business too
City Councilor Pat Davis Senate Bill 165 is being considered to provide Local Choice Energy. Local Choice Energy would give municipalities, counties and tribal entities the ability to take over utility services in their area. As president of the Albuquerque City Council, I can tell you from first-hand experience the city of Albuquerque has no business running a utility. No one who thinks their local electeds aren’t doing enough to solve housing, crime or just deliver basic services thinks it’s a good idea to add running utilities to their plates. Imagine if your utility grid was suddenly competing for the same political priorities and funds as your pothole and playground funds. When we talk to other cities who have tread this path, it appears that many electeds and their constituents now regret it. In many states, the costs increase, not decrease as supporters claim, and the programs rely on out-of-state energy brokers to have the program work. Here’s the scary part — those out-of-state energy brokers aren’t regulated like our current utilities, which means the burden of oversight and negotiation rests on the city, county or tribal entity. Most of our staff are already overtaxed, which means we will […]

British Business Bank Chief Sees UK Firms Avoiding Default ‘Armageddon’
(Bloomberg) — British businesses have headed off the threat of a defaults “Armageddon” as the possible end of painfully high interest rates and the energy crisis comes into view, according to the head of the government’s development bank. Most Read from Bloomberg Louis Taylor, chief executive officer of the British Business Bank, said the UK is escaping the significant rise in default rates that many feared after last year’s market chaos caused by former Prime Minister Liz Truss’s budget. The BBB – which administered the Covid-19 loan program — had warned last September that an economic downturn would likely cause a spike in defaults, with many firms loading up on debt during the pandemic. However, forecasters are expecting a shorter, shallower recession as wholesale energy prices tumble to pre-war levels and calm returns to UK markets. It boosts the prospect of the UK avoiding a wave of defaults that would hurt both businesses and lenders. “I wouldn’t say the picture is benign at the moment, but I don’t think it’s going to get materially worse necessarily,” said Taylor in an interview. “The prospects are improving because unlike three months ago people can see the peak in interest rates, the […]
CRC takes steps to give business owners room to grow
As part of an effort to spur development of New Jersey’s emerging cannabis marketplace, as well as encourage diversity, the Cannabis Regulatory Commission is taking steps to give business owners room to grow. During the regulatory board’s Feb. 8 meeting, members moved forward with several recommendations from its permitting and licensing committee, including allowing the state’s cap on the number of cultivation licenses to expire and improvements to the overall licensing process. Under the state’s cannabis law, the number of companies allowed to hold Class 1 (cultivator) licenses is limited to 37, but presently only 17 businesses are licensed to grow cannabis in New Jersey. The number of licensed operations – six that are medical only and 11 that can cultivate for recreational use as well as medical – is far below other states in the U.S. with legalized markets. Under New Jersey’s cannabis law, there is a limit on the number of licenses for cultivators for a 24-month period, a rule that is set to end Feb. 22. – AARON HOUSTON Under New Jersey’s cannabis law, there is a limit on the number of licenses for cultivators for a 24-month period, a rule that is set to end […]
