Digital Transformation: Plan Now To Save Later
Automation Food and beverage processors are implementing digital transformation projects to gain advantage over their competitors. Getty Images – Teera Konakan Like most other companies beginning a digital transformation journey, Fonterra—a multinational dairy processor—kept much of its manufacturing data on paper and in several electronic systems. According to Rockwell Automation, which is helping Fonterra digitalize its systems globally, Fonterra data at times could be incomplete or only understood by specific operators familiar with their systems. Data couldn’t be easily contextualized, nor could it be shared with other Fonterra facilities or management. There wasn’t a centralized management process, and version control issues abounded. [1] Sound familiar? Some processors are upgrading their existing software systems that have been in place for years with more modern systems capable of taking batch process data to a new level. But they don’t go it alone. Continental Mills sought help from Bachelor Controls Inc. (BCI) to convert its old batch systems supporting single-purpose recipes to data-driven, multipurpose recipes that could provide a significant time savings for recipe development and checkout. And in this case, changeover and implementation took place in a single weekend. To be able to accomplish such a quick changeover, both companies participated […]

New artificial intelligence and digital health resource published for the NHS
The health service’s digital transformation journey is set for a boost following the publication of a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Healthcare Technologies Capability framework. The resource has been released by Health Education England (HEE) and looks to identify knowledge gaps amongst NHS staff whilst also setting out the path ahead for digital enablement in the healthcare workforce. Commissioned by HEE, the research completed in conjunction with this project was done by The University of Manchester, which sought to evaluate what health professionals needed to develop their skills as the digital future of the NHS looms over the horizon. HEE’s National Clinical Lead for AI and Digital Medical Workforce, Dr Hatim Abdulhussein, said: “Skills and capability building is essential to support the digital transformation in the NHS, and it is imperative that health and care professionals have the appropriate capabilities to deliver safe, ethical and augmented patient care. “This framework will be enabler for both individuals wanting to assess their individual needs and digital aspirations, and for those providing education to guide an appropriate educational approach and content.” The framework also looks to build on recommendations made as part of the Topol Review that investigated the technological requirements […]

A Digital Solution For The Sunsetting Of Plain Old Telephone Service
Max is VP of Mobility & IoT at MetTel , where he leads mobile & IoT operations and related business development initiatives. getty Something big is happening in the world of IT communications. Over the past few years, quietly and discreetly, the world’s biggest telecom providers have been retiring their physical copper lines to fully digitalize their plain old telephone service (POTS). This digital transformation is better for telecommunications carriers/network providers and businesses alike, as copper networks are expensive to maintain and unreliable with gradual deterioration over the past 100 years. Meanwhile, business customers have been paying a high price for this erosion with monthly rate increases to offset the rising costs of maintenance. Based on my work in the industry, I can comfortably state that most out-of-contract POTS lines have tripled in cost just in the past year alone. As a result, these legacy phone services are being decommissioned, so steps need to be taken to find a more cost-effective, long-term alternative. Telecommunications Is Going Digital The Covid-19 pandemic rapidly accelerated the digitalization of many industries. Despite this transformation, one often overlooked yet critical area is the digital transformation of copper wire networks that are used for such […]
