SIU business prof: AI as a tool for hiring, layoffs can be wonderful or dangerous
Jim Nelson in front of a Smartboard CARBONDALE, Ill. — Could your job hinge on decisions made via the use of artificial intelligence? Recent polls indicate that may be the case. Jim Nelson , Rehn Professor of Business Analytics, coordinator of the analytics program in Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s College of Business and Analytics and the director of its Pontikes Center for Advanced Analytics and Artificial Intelligence , says managers need to be careful using AI and big data in making layoff and hiring decisions. “Artificial intelligence is a wonderful tool, and like any tool, it can be dangerous when not used properly,” said Nelson, who can be reached at nelson.j@business.siu.edu . “It’s only as good as the questions put to it and the data used to train it. Bad data inevitably leads to bad results. It’s great at giving recommendations using, if allowed, vast amounts of big data – far more than humans alone can possibly process. But the output still needs the ‘human touch’ to make sure something important hasn’t been left out of the decision-making process.” Nelson has more than 30 years of teaching and research in the field of analytics and artificial intelligence coupled with […]

Is Responsible AI a Technology Issue or a Business Issue?
How to merge the technology potential and business opportunities of responsible AI. Artificial intelligence, and ChatGPT in particular, has exploded worldwide. And so has the potential for misuse or abuse of AI, which presents a risk that must be taken seriously. However, AI also presents a range of potential benefits for society and individuals alike. Brad Fisher, CEO of Lumenova AI, explains how and why the application of responsible AI is both a technology debate and a business conundrum. AI is a hot topic, thanks to ChatGPT . People and organizations have begun to consider its myriad use cases enthusiastically, but there is also an undercurrent of concern for the possible risks and limitations. With this rush toward implementation, Responsible AI (RAI) has come to the forefront, and companies are questioning whether it is a technology or a business matter. I think it’s both. The report states that while both developments lend urgency to the efforts to implement responsible AI programs, we have seen that companies leading […]
What is the future of Binghamton Plaza? Business owners at odds with city’s plans
Binghamton Plaza business owners spoke out against the city’s plan to take over the property during a public hearing inside city council chambers Tuesday. The public hearing was the next step in the city’s plan to acquire the property at 33 W. State St. in Binghamton from its current owners, Binghamton Plaza, Inc. of Wayne, New Jersey, through eminent domain, which allows the government to take ownership of private property and developed it. Andrea Thomas, who has owned Kurious Kids Childcare within the Binghamton Plaza for almost 16 years, said many of the families they serve do not have transportation and rely on subsidies to pay for child care, which limits their child care choices. "Without access to child care, families who are already facing financial struggles would be forced to choose between losing their employment or placing their children with unlicensed home providers lacking proper training and a safe environment," Thomas said during the public comment session. And Philomena Harris, who has owned and operated Leather Corner Shoe Repair in the plaza with her husband, Timothy, since 1972, said some of their customers drive to Binghamton from all over the state just for their services. "We have worked […]

Unlock The Power Of Human Rights: How Business Leaders Can Make An Impact
Trish Joy Duggan is the founder of Imagine Museum , an accomplished artist, and a dedicated philanthropist. Getty The United Nations (UN) drafted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) 75 years ago in response to the atrocities of World War II. In pursuit of global peace, security and cooperation, the UN set these international standards to guide how we should treat each other as human beings. The 30 articles of the UDHR define our fundamental rights and freedoms: dignity; liberty; equality; the right to life and prohibition of slavery; individual rights in society; and spiritual, political, economic and cultural freedoms. We have yet to live those ideals to the fullest. From sexual harassment and poor race relations to voter suppression and extrajudicial killings , even the U.S. falls short in turning these lofty standards into widespread reality. Why? Eleanor Roosevelt, one of the declaration’s primary architects, wrote that human rights must begin close to home, which is “the world of the individual person; the neighborhood he lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory, farm or office where he works.” Educating individuals on these concepts can be a daunting task, and no one group is assigned […]
