Although digital transformation can help companies gain a competitive advantage, CIOs must pay attention to the human aspect of the project — or risk failure. Employees play a key role in an organization’s digital transformation. But they may find the required changes intimidating or overwhelming. Digital transformations push people out of their comfort zone. For example, employees may need to work twice as hard to succeed, especially if they must reskill or upskill . That’s why IT leaders must recognize the various employee reactions to a digital transformation initiative. Employees have many ways of responding to the changes digital transformation requires of them, but typically, four broad camps emerge, according to Isaac Sacolick in his book Digital Trailblazer: Essential Lessons to Jumpstart Transformation and Accelerate Your Technology Leadership . These include the following: early adopters who believe in transformational change; opportunists who don’t get involved until leadership explains what’s in it for them; employees who resist the disruptions and look for jobs elsewhere; and detractors who prefer the status quo. Since employee commitment is crucial to the success of a digital transformation, IT leaders need to create a culture that supports digital transformation . Engaging with different groups, understanding […]

The farm bill is a powerful opportunity for agricultural climate solutions
U.S. farmers, ranchers and foresters will need additional tools and resources to protect their land, keep growing food on a changing planet and contribute to national efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. That’s where the farm bill comes in. The farm bill is a critical piece of legislation that comes up every five years. It authorizes programs that provide producers with a safety net in tough times and supports them in adopting climate-friendly production practices. As Congress begins writing the next farm bill, new recommendations from the Food and Agriculture Climate Alliance provide some of the most significant alignment on climate and agriculture policy priorities to date. In 2020, EDF joined with the agriculture community to form an alliance with the idea that if we worked together to truly understand each other’s needs, we might end up with commonsense reforms that will be embraced by farmers and ranchers, while also improving environmental performance, especially on climate. The alliance’s recommendations aim to improve the ability of the U.S. agriculture and forestry sectors to mitigate climate and help limit temperature increases. And because warming is already here and making farming riskier, the recommendations also aim to improve resilience to a changing […]

American Airlines cuts almost 50,000 flights from summer schedule
American Airlines Group Inc. cut almost 50,000 from its summer schedule as the carrier continues to restrain capacity growth amid an ongoing pilot shortage. The Fort Worth-based carrier reduced its schedule by 5% and will now fly 875,133 flights from May to September, according to aviation data company Cirium. American’s schedule includes 875,133 flights from May to September. The bulk of the cuts occur in June and July, when slashed 19,887 flights and 19,920 flights, respectively. American spokeswoman Andrea Koos said the adjustments to the summer schedule are "in line" with the carrier’s approach to network and schedule planning. American publishes a placeholder schedule 331 days in advance and then makes cuts closer in based on the schedule it intends to operate. “We are now publishing our final schedule approximately 100 days in advance, which is in line with how we adjusted our schedule in 2019 prior to the pandemic," Koos said. "American is proud to offer customers the largest network of any U.S. airline through the summer, with, on average, more than 5,500 daily departures." Customers whose flights may have changed as a result of future schedule changes will have alternate travel options that get them to their […]

For an explanation of our Advertising Policy, visit this page . The death of business travel demand might have been greatly overestimated during the pandemic. Bill Gates, at one point, surmised as much as half of business travel demand was permanently killed during the early months of the pandemic. Hotel industry chatter in recent months focused on the idea it was likely 20% off pre-pandemic levels . However, the CEOs of each of the major publicly traded hotel groups in recent weeks reported a rosy picture of business travel. Keith Barr, the CEO of Holiday Inn and InterContinental owner IHG Hotels & Resorts, delivered one of the strongest cases for a full business travel demand recovery Tuesday. Average nightly rates for business travelers already exceed 2019 levels (and they have since March of last year). Occupancy rates for this demand sector are at 98% of 2019 levels, Barr said. “Despite some predictions, business travel is alive and well,” he added. For comparison: Marriott last week […]

NJ corporate business tax brings in $664M and should be kept, analysts say
More than half a billion dollars could be taken from state coffers if the state’s corporate business tax is allowed to expire at year’s end, fattening the bottom line of already profitable businesses and taking needed money from programs that benefit the average citizen, left-leaning think tank New Jersey Policy Perspective said in a new report. Released Wednesday, the report suggests that allowing the tax to lapse would cost the state “at least $664 million in annual revenue” and only benefits a “select few highly profitable corporations, providing an average tax cut of $5 million to companies with more than $100 million in annual profits.” The report estimates that roughly 70 percent of the corporate tax cut would go to businesses with more than $10 million in annual profits and corporations with more than $100 million in profits would receive the largest tax cut, averaging $4,952,000. While this is something that the group is advocating for, Gov. Phil Murphy has already said that he intends to let the so-called corporate millionaire’s tax expire at the end of the year. That shouldn’t come as a shock though. When Murphy and lawmakers implemented the increase on the corporate business tax in […]

Jimmie Williams, owner of social enterprise landscaping and snow removal firm Urban Roots , had his most successful year ever last year. He used that success to hire additional employees and to increase the company’s wages from minimum wage to prevailing wages. “It was really, really humbling to be able to offer our employees – mostly people from underserved communities – a livable wage,” he said. It’s not the first time Williams and his wife Tiffany have used their South Side business to give back to the community. The pair, who have participated in the Polsky Center’s Small Business Growth Program , have a mission to mentor youth and returning citizens – those re-entering society after incarceration – in underserved communities and provide them with steady employment. They have organized Earth Day events at local schools and have helped employees with everything from opening a bank account to learning how to read. “Our brand promise is that we’re committed to improving the economic landscape in underserved communities,” Tiffany Williams said. “We employ, educate and empower our employees.” This dedication is personal for the childhood […]
