Troy uses bond sale as educational opportunity for students
Troy Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education Christine DiPilato talks to students in the district about what a bond is and how it works. Troy Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Rick West tells district students about the different phases of asking for and using a bond as a special presentation Feb. 7. TROY — With Troy voters’ approval of a new bond last year, Troy School District officials knew they would have an influx of funds coming into the district; they used the opportunity to show students how the bond process works in real time. On Feb. 7, the bonds were sold on the market, and high school students from around the district gathered at Athens High School to observe the sale as it was projected on a screen, seeing chunks of the bond get bought out by investors. “From the very beginning, when we knew we would have the opportunity to sell the bonds, one of the first things we talked about was how we could involve the students,” explained Superintendent Richard Machesky. “It was important to us to live up to one of our district’s core values, which was finding a way to connect our students’ learning with […]
CarGurus: Issues With CarOffer Present An Opportunity
Summary Issues at CarOffer have overshadowed CARG’s strong core business. A slightly more difficult used car market should bode well for CARG. CARG has pricing power given the value of its offering. Dmytro Varavin/iStock via Getty Images CarGurus’ (NASDAQ: CARG ) results are being muddied by issues at CarOffer, but its core business remains strong and is greatly undervalued. The company has a number of catalysts including fixing the CarOffer business, a tougher car selling environment where dealers lean into advertising, and pricing power. Company Profile CARG is an online used and new automobile lead-generation and transaction marketplace. The company’s platform offers car dealers several tiered subscriptions to list and help sell their vehicle inventory. All dealers can put their inventory on CARG’s site for free, although leads are capped and there is no dealership branding, address, website URL, or phone number displayed on the free tier. Consumers can contact these dealers only through an anonymous, CarGurus‑branded email address so the dealer does not receive any of the consumer’s personal contact information. The company then has three tiers of paid subscriptions (Enhanced, Featured, and Featured Priority) that gives dealers different levels of exposure and features. Listings for all paying […]
Gen Zs represent the opportunity of a lifetime according to latest m1nd-set research
Currently, Gen Zs’ travel retail shopping behaviour demonstrates a strong degree of apathy, according to the m1nd-set research. Gen Z travellers are generally less engaged with the duty free shopping experience. They are less likely to purchase in store, and when they do shop, they spend less. Although current shopper behaviour among the young Gen Z traveller demographic does not show engagement or excitement with the duty free and travel retail offer, this is a clear contrast with their potential, the latest research from m1nd-set reveals. Following significant interest among industry partners and stakeholders in this young, high-potential age-segment, the Swiss-based travel and travel retail research agency, has published a study which focuses on how these young care-free shoppers behave when travelling. It is not so much their current behaviour in travel retail which are cause for excitement, m1nd-set says, but how this will evolve as the segment ages, matures and sees their purchasing power and propensity to travel increase and dominate vis a vis other segments. m1nd-set owner and CEO, Dr. Peter Mohn explained: “In the same way that the industry has been Chinese consumer centric and focused on Millennials in recent years, it is imperative for businesses […]

‘We’ve run out of time and money’: Opportunity House Thrift Store to close Vacaville location
VACAVILLE, Calif. — The Opportunity House Thrift Store Vacaville location is set to close due to low profits and high maintenance costs, according to the nonprofit that operates it. Vacaville Solano Services Corporation (VSSC) announced the closing Wednesday, though didn’t specify a timeline for when exactly the doors would shut at 107 Peabody Rd. "COVID shifted shopping patterns by decreasing sales and raising staffing costs," said Michelle Strand, VSSC Board President, in a statement . "This unforeseen and unexpected shift resulted in the thrift store operating at a loss and contributed to draining VSSC reserves." The nonprofit says it’s spending $20,000 a month to keep the doors open, and the choice to close the more than 20-year-old store was a hard one. "This has been an agonizing decision for the board, but it is necessary to protect VSSC’s mission," said Strand. "The ability to provide high-quality support services and programs to help people attain self-sufficiency has always been, and will continue to be, our priority." The store, in its two decades, made enough money to build and maintain the Opportunity House homeless shelter on Bennett Hill Court for the past 10 years, according to VSSC. The building was later […]
