New Sac State Business dean to focus on accessibility, community
Jean-Francois Coget, Sacramento State’s new dean of the College of Business, started in the role in January after a nationwide search was held to replace William Cordeiro, who retired in July 2022. (Sacramento State/Andrea Price) Jean-Francois Coget is a Parisian by birth, and spent much of his childhood living in Luxembourg. He even spent a year as a naval attaché at the French Embassy in Portugal. But Coget, Sac State’s new College of Business dean, has a developed a strong connection to the Golden State, beginning from his time in Southern California pursuing his doctorate. While serving as dean of Sonoma State’s School of Business and Economics, Jean-Francois Coget, Sacramento State’s new dean of the College of Business, created a mentorship program for first-generation students and made MBA programs more accessible to underrepresented groups, an effort he hopes to continue at Sac State. (Sacramento State/Andrea Price) “The wonderful weather, the culture, the open-mindedness of the people … there’s something about California that makes people more creative. California is leading the world in many ways, such as progress on such issues as sustainability and in the tech sector,” he said. “Californians are adventurous, but there’s a responsible spirit at the […]
Vows by many big U.S. companies to back out of Russia hold firm a year later
One year after Russia invaded Ukraine , many of the largest U.S. companies say their moves to suspend operations or withdraw from Russia remain in effect. An NBC News review of the 30 companies that make up the Dow Jones Industrial Average found that 24 had disclosed businesses in Russia before the war. Of those 24 firms, 18 have either suspended business in Russia or exited the country over the past year, and the remaining six have reduced the scope of their operations there, according to company spokespeople reached by NBC News and past public statements. Six companies in the Dow 30 haven’t publicly clarified their business dealings in Russia, if any, since the invasion. But two of them — Walmart and Home Depot — told NBC News that they had no prior or current business there. The other four didn’t respond to requests for comment. Seven companies that announced last spring that they were paring back at least some operations from Russia didn’t respond to requests for an update on those moves. But all 19 of the firms that did provide updates or confirmation of their status as of Friday said they had no plans to cultivate closer […]
Aligning security and business strategies
As cyber threats intensify, security and finance professionals need to align on strategies now more than ever. Credit: iStock By Sean Duca, vice president and regional chief security officer for Asia Pacific and Japan at Palo Alto Networks Some economists predict that we could soon face a global recession. Looking at history, this does not bode well for levels of cybercrime. However, there is some evidence that macroeconomic conditions can impact cybercrime. In times of economic downturn, for example, cybercrime may increase as people turn to illegal activities to make money. During the 2008–2009 Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and subsequent recession, researchers noted that cybercrime rates increased dramatically. Their report focused exclusively on financial cybercrime, including identity theft. It attributed the rise to the proliferation of new technologies in regions around the world, with many more people than ever before possessing IT skills. Adapting to an evolving cybercrime landscape Cybercrime is constantly evolving. To keep ahead of cybercriminals, organizations must remain agile, pivoting to embrace new strategies and technologies whenever necessary in order to outrun attacks. When businesses are struggling due to the recession, there’s a strong temptation to look for ways to cut spending. This is the time […]
Putting You in Your Business
Courtesy of Yelp Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Behind the Review host and Yelp’s Small Business Expert, Emily Washcovick, shares a look at this week’s episode of the podcast. Small business owners pour their time, knowledge, and money into building a business and keeping it running, all while trying to increase their bottom line, hire great employees, and create an excellent customer experience. With multiple priorities to juggle, it can be easy to leave out a crucial element of the business plan: the business owner themselves. When your business reflects more of you as a person—and not just an owner—you can humanize your business, improve the customer experience, and build brand loyalty. An easy way to put your voice and personality into your business is through your responses to online reviews. When a business owner takes the time to respond with an authentic voice, current and potential customers take notice. In fact, 88% of consumers are likely to use a business if they can see the business owner responds to their reviews, whether positive or critical. Even when things go wrong, Alyssa Bayer, owner of Milk + Honey Spa in Austin, said that her review response […]

Colleges Fear Cost of Doing Business Will Become Much Costlier
It’s budget season for colleges and that could mean faculty and staff raises, money for new programs and improvements, and breathing room, or layoffs, cutbacks, and, in the worst cases, closure. For many colleges, budgeting in 2023 is tougher than ever, according to experts. Tuition-dependent private institutions and increasingly tuition-dependent public colleges are facing lower revenues, thanks to enrollments depressed by the pandemic and ongoing demographic shifts. The nearly $80 billion in federal aid that buoyed institutions through the worst of Covid-19 is effectively gone. And the go-go economy that helped the country power through the worst of the past three years has cooled, sapping endowment performance and spiking inflation, which makes it more expensive to heat classrooms and feed students. Warner Bros. Discovery tells teams it is leaving RSN business
Warner Bros. Discovery has told teams that it plans to exit the regional sports network business entirely within the next several weeks. The company, which operates three AT&T SportsNet -branded channels in Denver, Houston and Pittsburgh and has a minority stake in the Root Sports channel in Seattle, has told teams that they have until March 31 to reach an agreement to take their rights back. Business Highlights: Recession warning; Inflation speeds up
___ Fed’s rate hikes likely to cause a recession, research says NEW YORK (AP) — Can the Federal Reserve keep raising interest rates and defeat the nation’s worst bout of inflation in 40 years without causing a recession? Not according to a new research paper that concludes that such an “immaculate disinflation” has never happened before. The paper was produced by a group of leading economists, and two Fed officials addressed its conclusions in their own remarks Friday. When inflation soars, as it has for the past two years, the Fed typically responds by raising interest rates, often aggressively, to try to cool the economy and slow price increases. The Fed’s higher rates, in turn, make mortgages, auto loans, credit card borrowing, and business lending more expensive. ___ Key US inflation measure surges at fastest rate since June WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge rose last month at its fastest pace since June, an alarming sign that price pressures remain entrenched in the U.S. economy and could lead the Fed to keep raising interest rates well into this year. Consumer prices rose 0.6% from December to January, up sharply from a 0.2% increase from November to […]
Tough Love: The Restaurant Business in Oregon
Few industries have suffered as much during and after the height of COVID than the restaurant business. Lockdowns that closed doors for months, a massive shift to takeout only, inflation pressures and a labor shortage have all wracked an industry that was already tough to begin with. Oregon On The Record spoke with those on the front lines of the restaurant business in our community and heard directly about the incredible pressure, stress, and love that they daily routine entails. We spoke with chef owners from noted local establishments Lion and Owl, Pazzo, All thai’d Up, and Ivy’s Cookin’ and heard how they survived the pandemic and how their mindset of flexibility and innovation kept them going during the darkest of times. The president and CEO of the Oregon Restaurant and Lodging Association also told us that the industry is still suffering from a lack of employees who haven’t yet filled positions at a pre-pandemic level. Yet despite the challenges, everyone told us that being a restauranter is a true calling for those who heed it.
