Navy Office of Small Business Programs hits the street to try and increase 8(a) awards

When the Navy’s Office of Small Business Programs fell short of its small disadvantaged business (SDB) goals in fiscal 2022, it made a decision to aggressively reach out to potential companies. With the numbers in for the first half of 2023, the agency said it still has some work to do. “We missed the small disadvantaged business goal by a little over 1% [in fiscal 2022]. The Department of the Navy had a goal of 8.3%. And I believe we came in about 7%, a little over 7%. We missed the goal just slightly in bringing in 8(a) firms ,” said Arveice Washington, deputy director of the Navy’s Office of Small Business Programs in an interview with Federal News Network after she spoke at the National Defense Industrial Association’s Expeditionary Warfare Conference on Feb. 23. So far this year, Navy prime contract awards through Feb. 14 show SBDs awards coming in at 4.5% of the total, with a year-end goal of 7.44% of total contracts. Overall, the Navy spent $31.91 billion on contract awards by Feb. 14, with $4.14 billion going to small businesses. Washington said the second half of the fiscal year tends to have more small business […]

Can technology clean up the shrimp farming business?

Can technology clean up the shrimp farming business?

Water pollution is threatening the livelihood of Debabrata Khuntia By Priti Gupta in Mumbai & Ben Morris in London Business reporters For generations the family of Debabrata Khuntia made a living by fishing in the Bay of Bengal and the rivers and canals of Purba Medinipur in West Bengal. He remembers being able to catch 10 tonnes of fish a year, some of which he would keep and the rest he would sell in the market. But those days are gone. There are few fish and Debabrata now makes a living growing tomatoes and brinjal. He is in no doubt what is to blame. "Excessive shrimp farming." Many farmers have shifted to shrimp farming because the money is better, he says. But that involves building shrimp ponds, feeding the shrimp and treating them with antibiotics. At the end of the growing cycle – when the shrimp are ready for market – the water is flushed into the river untreated which, Debabrata says, has caused pollution. "The water turns black and smells," he says. The poor quality of the water has even hit his vegetable crop. Shrimp farming has also been blamed for social and environmental problems elsewhere in the […]

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire posts 8% drop in operating earnings as railroad business sags

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire posts 8% drop in operating earnings as railroad business sags

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway’s operating earnings per share for the fourth quarter, which exclude changes in the value of the company’s investment portfolio, fell 7%, the company said Saturday. Berkshire Hathaway’s operating earnings declined 8% in the fourth quarter to $6.7 billion after taxes, hurt by a drop in profits at the company’s railroad business and a decline in the U.S. dollar. Excluding the dollar’s fall, which increased the value of the company’s BRK.A, +0.51% BRK.B, +0.31% foreign-currency debt, Berkshire’s operating earnings for the period would have risen about 13% from the fourth quarter of 2021, to $7.9 billion. This is more indicative of the company’s earnings power, given that quarterly currency volatility has little impact on Berkshire’s underlying earnings power. Stock repurchases totaled $2.6 billion, up from $1 billion in the third quarter, bringing the total for 2022 to $7.9 billion. That’s down sharply from $27 billion in 2021 and $24.7 billion in 2020. Berkshire’s operating earnings per share for the fourth quarter, which exclude changes in the value of the company’s investment portfolio, fell 7% to about $4,585 per class A share, Barron’s estimates. That fell short of the FactSet consensus estimate of $5,305 a share. Berkshire’s […]

A Kapolei woman turned her pandemic hobby into a business and a homage to her Hawaiian roots

While many people learned how to bake bread during the pandemic, not everyone turned it into a business.(Hawaii Bread Co.) HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Keala Souza created Hawaii Bread Co. out of her Kapolei home during lockdown and looked to her own Hawaiian culture for inspiration. Souza has a background as a hula dancer, but before baking, she worked as a flight attendant for Hawaiian airlines for 9.5 years. During the time she traveled the world, she found a love for classic Parisian baked goods, but she noticed an opportunity to bridge a gap between traditional French baking and her Hawaiian culture. “When you think of a bakery, you think French, European, and I really wanted to show that Hawaiians can hold space, Hawaiian flavors, Hawaiian textures, can really hold space in a place where you wouldn’t normally see or think of Hawaii.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by @hawaiibread.co Her baking journey began as a means of keeping her family healthy and sustainable during the pandemic. “It was something born out of a bad time for all of us,” said Souza. But once she mastered the art of the perfect sourdough loaf, she began to see […]
