Last year, SK Telecom and U.S. firm Joby Aviation inked a tie-up to develop air taxis for the South Korean market. Joby Aviation is a maker of so-called electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles. These electric flying vehicles are a seen by advocates as a way to transport people around dense cities and avoid traffic. The South Korean government is pushing forward with trying to commercialize air taxis by 2025. SK Telecom and Joby Aviation are looking to take advantage of the government backing. Ha Min-yong, chief development officer of SK Telecom, told CNBC in an interview Sunday that the company’s air taxi service will be made available commercially “sometime in the middle of 2025,” before expanding to other areas like logistics. “So by 2025, if we are able to prove that the service quality is acceptable to the general public with the safety and also security, […]
Generative AI’s money game
Illustration: Sarah Grillo/Axios The generative AI revolution will be monetized, but nobody can yet say exactly how. The big picture: It seems logical that if AI can conduct conversations and produce images, companies will figure out how to use it to build revenue and profits — but there’s no guarantee, and the technology could also become a money sink for early adopters. What’s happening: In the short to medium term, the winners will likely be the owners of the foundational AI models — like Microsoft and OpenAI — who can charge others to use them for experiments and new applications. If those experiments in applying generative AI’s capabilities to specific commercial problems and consumer desires succeed, then we might see broader new businesses emerge built on tech’s two time-tested business models, advertising and fees or subscriptions. In the meantime, the news around projects like ChatGPT and Bing AI may quickly shift from the gee-whiz world of mindblowing sci-fi breakthroughs to very mundane nuances of B2B pricing. Driving the news: As it rolled out the generative-AI-enabled version of its Bing search engine, Microsoft also announced big hikes in the price for outside developers to plug their programs into Bing via […]

How to Have More Effective Conversations With Business Stakeholders About Software Architecture
Key Takeaways Trust and transparency provide the foundation for effective conversations. You won’t be successful until you can have open and meaningful conversations with business stakeholders. Frame scope discussion in terms of business outcomes, not features. Features may or may not deliver desired outcomes and may come and go, but outcomes are relatively stable and tend to be refined but not completely invalidated. Every conversation with a business stakeholder will probably turn into a conversation about money. And what they are most concerned about is not absolute cost, but cost-effectiveness. Cost thresholds can help teams make better architectural decisions. Understanding the cost threshold of an outcome helps the IT team make choices that can improve profitability without compromising the outcomes the solution delivers. An application is like an iceberg: business stakeholders only see features "above the water", so most of the development team’s architectural decisions are invisible and "underwater". Discuss architectural decisions in terms of customer experience to help stakeholders understand the trade-offs between different alternatives. Quality Attributes can help to frame this discussion by helping you to talk about the quality of the customer’s experience in concrete and measurable ways. "Almost every problem in software development is fundamentally […]
AG Gaston Conference promotes wider Black business ownership
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – If there was an action movie about a person whose superpower was running a successful business, what would you call it? More importantly, would you buy a ticket to see it? Elevating Black business owners to hero status was one of Bob Dickerson’s goals for this year’s A.G. Gaston Conference at the BJCC. Nearly 700 people attended on February 21 and 22 to hear from those who are on the come-up or creating conditions to pull others up. “One of the things that we’ve always wanted to do was to elevate entrepreneurs, especially Black entrepreneurs, to heroic status” says Dickerson, a former banker who founded the conference nearly 20 years ago, in part, to pay tribute to his hero who was also Alabama’s first Black millionaire. “And we know that A.G. Gaston, because he was so successful as an entrepreneur, became a hero. But, we need to celebrate our other business owners. Now, business ownership is hard. It’s tough. Sometimes it’s not rewarding, but we consumers, especially Black consumers, need to lift up, hold up, and promote Black entrepreneurship.” The lineup Dickerson and his team assembled for the conference included: Nicholas Perkins – CEO of […]

Fast-forward a few years, social media is now almost mandatory for restaurants as a resource to attract potential new customers. "Social media is all about storytelling," she says. "It’s a media you can control. It’s not like a Yelp or something else where someone is putting their opinion on it, so I think it’s a great way to reach […]

‘Cancel Culture’: How Business Leaders Can Protect Themselves From Negative Online Press
By Evan Nierman, Founder & CEO of Red Banyan , a global crisis PR firm. Co-author of The Cancel Culture Curse and author of Amazon bestseller Crisis Averted Getty Cancel culture: It’s a buzzword that seems to be popping up everywhere, and for good reason. Like it or not, cancel culture is changing people’s lives. Comics can be canceled because critics don’t like their jokes, celebrities can be canceled because people disagree with their politics and private individuals can be canceled because someone didn’t like something they posted online. Recognizing an online attack and having a plan to address the fallout can help businesses and leaders avoid negative consequences. Unfortunately, these situations often happen without warning. Having a crisis plan in place can be key to weathering online accusations and coming out on the other side as unscathed as possible. Understand The Definition Of Cancel Culture Cancel culture can foment a climate of fear. Cancel culture involves removing status or esteem from someone or something based on behavior or comments someone views as offensive. Accusers select their target, then rally the troops in a call to action, sometimes based on false accusations. The fallout can be fast, furious and […]
