UD alumnus Rama Marda established the Rama Marda ’72 Graduate Scholars Fund to honor his experience at the University and to help others Rama Marda, a UD graduate alumnus, recently made a transformational gift to the Graduate College Rama Marda’s first flight was from his home in India to the United States. Fueled by his sense of adventure and a research assistantship that covered his tuition and living expenses, Marda was on his way to beginning his journey as a graduate student in the University of Delaware’s College of Engineering. “The funding from the research assistantship was a major factor in my ability to come to the University, and I had a wonderful experience with professors, meeting new friends, doing research, but also connecting outside of the classroom,” said Marda, class of 1972. “At the time, I was fascinated by aerospace engineering — just a few years before in 1969 a man had landed on the moon — and I was given this opportunity to work with Professor M.I. Young on studying helicopter rotor blades. I am so thankful to UD and the professor for the assistantship, and I am very grateful I can pay it back in some […]
Lumen Technologies: Debt Opportunity Yielding 16%
style-photography Lumen Technologies (NYSE: LUMN ) reported their fourth quarter and full year earnings earlier this month . The results sent panic through investors as the company’s stock plummeted, down 30% in February alone. The bonds, which were already priced at distressed levels, sank further. The company’s 2039 maturing bond, which I covered last November , has dropped to 50 cents on the dollar, now yielding over 16%. I believe the market has overreacted to Lumen’s results and created a great opportunity for income investors to pick up its debt at a discount. FINRA Lumen’s year was not without challenges. The company saw another decline in revenues, this time by more than $2 billion. While some of the decline was related to asset sales, expenses ticked up as well, creating a near $0 operating income. Fortunately, $3.2 billion of the expenses was goodwill impairment, a non-cash write-off of intangible assets. Stripping out impairments would create $1.4 billion decline in expenses on a comparable basis versus 2021 and create enough operating income to support interest expenses. SEC 10-K Lumen’s balance sheet shows the transformation that occurred due to asset sales in 2022. The company’s assets shrank by $12 billion and […]
Feat of Clay embraces change as opportunity for growth
Feat of Clay has been at its 107 S. Main St. location in Aztec for about 15 years. (DelSheree Gladden/The Journal) Feat of Clay gallery is a 23-year fixture in the Aztec community, with much of that time spent at the same downtown Aztec location, but a change in building ownership paired with tripling rent necessitated a move. The gallery has been at 107 S. Main Ave. for about 15 years. It is a historic building that lends itself to displaying artwork. It was built in 1903 as a meeting place for the Odd Fellow fraternity, which occupied the second floor for most of the building’s existence. The first floor has hosted a variety of retail shops over the past century. The building is now on the National and State Historic Register. After the building changed ownership in 2021, work began to upgrade the building. The upper floor was renovated first, and the gallery’s co-op members were told that renovation of the first floor would take about three months, during which time they would have to clear out the space and either close or move to a temporary location. Either option going to be a major challenge for the […]

A business credit card with ultra-high rewards on stays within the Wyndham brand and fill-ups at the pump. Introduction The $95 annual fee Wyndham Business Earner® Rewards Card offers high rewards potential, but only for very specific purchases. People who travel frequently for business and who are happy to always stay at a Wyndham property can earn an impressive 8 Wyndham Rewards points per dollar on hotel stays. They can also earn 8 points per dollar on gas, 5 points per dollar on eligible marketing, advertising and utility spending and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases. There’s also a decent welcome bonus of 45,000 points after spending $2,000 in the first 90 days. Redemptions for Wyndham hotels typically start at either 7,500, 15,000 or 30,000 points per bedroom so that welcome bonus is enough to jump-start a vacation. The downside of the Wyndham Business Earner Rewards Card is that even with a lucrative rewards structure, there is no option to redeem these rewards for cash back. Instead, rewards can only be redeemed for gift cards, online shopping purchases and free nights at participating Wyndham Rewards properties. One perk of this card not to overlook is the included […]

We must foster digital transformation of SMEs for resilience
Google Hustle Academy Class of 2022 cohort graduates Image: PRECIOUS JOY Our small businesses are set for a doom loop if we can’t expand the benefits of digitisation. 50 years on from some of the world’s coolest computing milestones and over 50 per cent of African Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are still not using a digital business tool. In a 2020 study by African Banker and banking platform Backbase, digital transformation is imperative in every aspect of the business-from customer attendance to internal operations. For SMEs to be the engines of inclusive growth, we need to rethink SME development strategies that put digitisation at the centre of reform. Studies from developing economies show that digital business tools are fundamental to SME growth. They make you more efficient, productive, and innovative. Plus, they are the only way you can reliably reach a marketplace beyond your hood. But first, back to those 50-year milestones. 1972 was monumental for us techies. It was the year that saw the launches of the C programming language, floppy disks, the first scientific pocket calculator, the first international ARPANET connections and the seminal video game,Pong. It reminds us that the digital age is entering middle […]
More Vietnamese companies start digital transformation process
Vietnamese enterprises have begun allocating a budget for digital transformation, which shows heightened awareness of the need for the process. This was the conclusion of a newly released annual 2022 enterprises’ digital transformation annual report. The survey was implemented by the Enterprise Development Agency (EDA), an arm of the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI), in cooperation with LinkSME, a project on promoting reform and improving connectivity for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The survey showed that Vietnamese enterprises are in the digitization stage, applying new technologies and software to implement digital transformation. However, many of them still cannot reach their goals and have stopped the use of technologies and software, while others are still applying the solutions, but are facing difficulties. More than 48 percent of enterprises carried out digital transformation, but they stopped the process because the solutions were unsuitable, or they no longer have demand. The reasons were the lack of personnel for the implementation. They also could not exactly define digital transformation goals and strategies. Only 2.2 percent of enterprises can master technology and management software to analyze data and make production and business decisions. In Vietnam, enterprises mostly apply digital solutions to operations that […]
