Next up in 5 MACON, Ga. — There are many things to think about when starting your own business. Getting a loan to kick off your company for things like advertising, supplies, and even paying employees, but a Mercer Africana Studies professor says many Black businesses have an extra hurdle— trouble getting a loan. Katrina Cohens, life and leadership coach, started her life culture and consulting business in 2021 to help others no matter their background, race, or religion. "I work with individuals one on one, helping them achieve their goals creating action plans and helping them understand that life comes at everybody," says Cohens. She knows life can come at business owners hard, especially when jump-starting it. "It’s going to be ups and downs in every business, especially when you’re getting started," says Cohens. One hurdle she avoided was that she didn’t need a loan, but that’s rare. The Harvard Business Review stated in 2020 that Black founders received roughly 1% of venture capitalist funding. They say one of the reasons: capital investors who are largely white aren’t good at recognizing and developing black entrepreneurs. "When you’re talking about Black businesses, there is clear proof that many financial […]
How Change Happens In The Fashion And Apparel Business
Innovation happens when unmet needs are addressed. Photo courtesy Dovetail Workwear Coastal Farm, a west coast-based retailer, says its people change pipe, feed livestock, hunt, fish, enjoy the county fair and rodeos, and get their "hands dirty, day in and day out." Kim Brownell, Divisional Merchandise Manager, says customers "enjoy the farm lifestyle" and are most likely to be female and drive a Ford F-250. There’s a good chance that many, perhaps most, customers of Coastal Farm have purchased a pair of bib overalls at some point. But until about five years ago, a female Coastal farm customer could only buy bib overalls that were designed for men. The need for women’s bib overalls has been growing for a long time as the number of women working in construction increased. According to the National Association of Women In Construction, women made up about 10% of the labor force in construction jobs in the U.S. in 2022. But the established players in the market kept producing the men’s bib overall they knew how to make so well. Outsiders Wake Up An Industry About five years ago, two women in the landscaping business, Kate Day and Sara DeLuca, were frustrated with […]

Honey, we blew up the Hollywood business model. Does anyone know how to fix it?
(Photo illustration by Nicole Vas / Los Angeles Times; Getty Images and Unsplash photos) Welcome to the Wide Shot, a newsletter about the business of entertainment. Sign up here to get it in your inbox. James L. Dolan, the interim executive chairman of AMC Networks, has been perking up some of our sources’ ears with his frank assessments of the state of the entertainment business as studios and TV giants adjust to the realities of streaming. “As I’ve said in the past, the current mechanisms for monetizing content are not working,” Dolan said during the company’s earnings call this month. “The content industry needs to reorganize itself. We’re seeing this now with most media companies beginning to course correct to better monetize content and improve the economics of their business.” In other words, the business model is broken, and no one seems to have a clear idea of how to fix it. The challenges should already be familiar for regular readers, but here’s a quick summary. The explosion of streaming services that started in 2019 created an expectation among audiences that they could get loads of premium film and TV content for a monthly fee that made it feel […]
Should NH license massage businesses?
For several years the NH Legislature has considered bills to license massage establishments, similar to how the state licenses nail salons and barbershops. At first glance, this seems like many other licensing debates, with tension between public health and government overreach. A deeper look uncovers an ongoing discussion over how to fight human trafficking in the Granite State. A proposal to license establishments, not just individuals Massage therapists need to complete education and apply for a license to work in New Hampshire. However, there is no specific license for massage establishments that employ multiple massage therapists. Senate Bill 212, currently in the NH Senate, would require a license to operate an establishment where massage therapy services are offered by more than one person. (There is an exception for sole proprietors without employees.) Right now, it is difficult for the Office of Professional Licensure and Certification (OPLC) to investigate whether everyone offering a massage is licensed within a larger business. The OPLC has to wait for a complaint to investigate, and even then a massage establishment can throw up roadblocks. The OPLC has little power to shut them down. At a recent public hearing for SB 212, a representative of […]
Reshaping Corporate America with Billions in Giveaways
CHIPS Act recipients must provide child care, said Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.Brendan Smialowski/Agence France-Presse — Getty Images Social policy through semiconductors When the bipartisan CHIPS Act passed last year to provide $52 billion to promote chip-building in America, trade experts hailed it as the most significant investment in industrial policy in a half-century. But new disclosures about what companies must do to get the CHIPS money — including guaranteeing child care for workers and refraining from stock buybacks — show that the Biden administration is also keen on using federal dollars to reshape corporate America. The CHIPS Act is increasingly about more than, well, chips. To be sure, the law is meant to revive America’s semiconductor industry by funding research and manufacturing in the U.S., reducing a reliance on foreign production for critical tech components. It’s also been described as a national security measure . (It’s worth noting that lawmakers from both parties have already questioned whether the already-profitable chip industry needs such funding.) But there are strings attached to the money: Those seeking $150 million or more must guarantee affordable, high-quality child care for plant workers. (Some of the federal subsidies can go toward meeting the requirement.) Commerce […]
Uber’s Mideast business Careem to cease operations in Qatar
A customer uses Careem application with his smartphone in Mosul, Iraq September 25, 2019. REUTERS/Abdullah Rashid DOHA, Feb 27 (Reuters) – Uber’s Middle Eastern business Careem will cease operations in Qatar on Tuesday, the company announced in a message sent to customers in the Gulf Arab state on Monday. The surprise announcement comes two months after the World Cup in Qatar, when Careem-branded vehicles were part of the tournament’s official plans to transport visiting fans, alongside cars from Uber and local taxi provider Karwa. "Unfortunately, Careem’s ride hailing operations will no longer operate in Qatar as of February 28, 2023," said the message, which also informed customers holding Careem credit that the company would issue a full refund by March 15. Careem did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment. Careem was bought by Uber Technologies Inc in 2019 for $3.1 billion, giving the U.S. firm market dominance across the Middle East and Pakistan. Careem only offered ride-hailing services in Qatar, unlike in larger Middle Eastern markets like the United […]
Survey: Business Economists Push Back Recession Forecasts
A majority of the nation’s business economists expect a U.S. recession to begin later this year than they had previously forecast, after a series of reports have pointed to a surprisingly resilient economy despite steadily higher interest rates. Fifty-eight percent of 48 economists who responded to a survey by the National Association for Business Economics envision a recession sometime this year, the same proportion who said so in the NABE’s survey in December. But only a quarter think a recession will have begun by the end of March, only half the proportion who had thought so in December. The findings, reflecting a survey of economists from businesses, trade associations and academia, were released Monday. A third of the economists who responded to the survey now expect a recession to begin in the April-June quarter. One-fifth think it will start in the July-September quarter. The delay in the economists’ expectations of when a downturn will begin follows a series of government reports that have pointed to a still-robust economy even after the Federal Reserve has raised interest rates eight times in a strenuous effort to slow growth and curb high inflation. In January, employers added more than a half-million jobs, […]
