Assignments include everything from writing educational raps to analyzing music videos with theory and data. This semester MC Serch will join a class to break down the music video for the 1989 3rd Bass single “The Gas Face,” a provocative take on the business crossover of hip-hop. C. Judge: County dispatcher ran a for-profit business out of the sheriff’s office
A county dispatcher was fired last year after he was accused of running his private auction business out of the sheriff’s office in the Greene County Law Enforcement Center. (Photo via Google Earth) A Greene County police dispatcher was justifiably fired last year for the “brazen conversion of county taxpayer resources to personal gain,” an Iowa judge has ruled. Newly released state records indicate Matthew J. Roberts was fired last September from the Greene County Sheriff’s Department after it was alleged he had been using county staff, computers and other equipment to run his private auction business from the front counter of the Greene County Law Enforcement Center. The records show Roberts was employed by the sheriff’s department as a full-time dispatcher from 2010 until September 2022. He was tasked with answering 911 emergency calls, dispatching law enforcement and emergency medical personnel, and handling warrant information for the sheriff and the Jefferson Police Department. Last May, Roberts was regularly working the overnight shift, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., when Sheriff Jack Williams grew concerned over the high printing expense associated with certain employees who appeared to be using the county’s equipment for personal business. At the time, Roberts […]

Brexit: What does Windsor Framework mean for business?
Checks on goods at Northern Ireland ports will be reduced under the new deal By John Campbell BBC News NI economics and business editor The UK government has reached agreement with the EU on major changes to the Northern Ireland Protocol. Small business needs led Cornerstone to build a lending program from scratch
Cornerstone Community Federal Credit Union has spent the last three years building a commercial lending program from the ground up. When the program launched in summer 2021, officials at the credit union thought they might be able to build their commercial lending portfolio by about $1 million a year. "We blew past that like 30 times over," said CEO Eric Hepkins. The portfolio now stands at about $31 million. Cornerstone lends to businesses in Erie and Niagara counties. The program’s early success has been the result of careful planning, strategic hiring and a shared enthusiasm for the work. "It’s really unique in this marketplace to have a hand in building something almost from the ground up," said Jeff Sentiff, senior vice president and director of retail for Cornerstone. Sentiff joined the credit union last year, one of several new hires made to bolster the new commercial lending program. "If we’re going to do it, we’re going to do it right," Hepkins said. "We ended up bringing on six to 10 people who are now in this program." That approach is a far cry from the first time Cornerstone dabbled with commercial lending. The credit union introduced a commercial lending […]

Maryland Comptroller Brooke Lierman (D) released a report Monday with dozens of recommendations to improve the state agency of more than 1,000 employees. Lierman’s transition team led by Democratic honorary co-chairs former Comptroller Peter Franchot, Secretary of State Susan Lee and Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, focused on six topics in the 45-page report : data and innovation, tax administration and customer engagement, pensions and investment, procurement and the Board of Public Works, local government engagement and public engagement. “The Transition Team’s Report represents a new starting point for our agency,” Lierman said in a statement. “As the 34th Comptroller of Maryland, I am dedicated to working with our new executive leadership team, all Comptroller employees and partners across the state to reimagine how the Comptroller’s Office can […]

German-based Axel Springer is one of Europe’s biggest media houses. BERLIN—The German owner of Politico and other U.S. outlets announced Tuesday a restructuring of its domestic operation as part of a strategy to shift its focus to the U.S. and become a globally leading digital-only publisher. Axel Springer SE, one of Europe’s biggest media houses and the only one with a major U.S. presence, will slim down its corporate structure. It aims to boost earnings in its German media business by around 100 million euros, equivalent to $106.1 million, over the next three years, with a mid-term aim to shut down its print editions, the company said.
