Sri Lanka’s crisis offers an opportunity to reset its development model
Sri Lanka is at a critical moment in its history. Years of economic mismanagement, weak governance, poor policy choices, and the impacts of external shocks such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, plunged the country into its worst-ever crisis in 2022. Economic collapse and political instability have devastated lives and livelihoods across the board, dealing the heaviest blow to the poorest and most vulnerable. Regular climate-induced disasters add to Sri Lanka’s fragility. The depth of the crisis has made it clear that Sri Lanka needs a new development model. But the road to recovery is challenging and the necessary fiscal adjustment measures can be painful. Debt relief from Sri Lanka’s creditors and fresh financing from international financial institutions are thus urgent to ensure people don’t lose patience with reforms and the opportunity for a change isn’t lost. The economic crisis has left deep scars. Poverty nearly doubled in Sri Lanka between 2021 and 2022, climbing from 13 to a staggering 25% (using a poverty line of $ 3.65 per person per day), and is projected to increase by more than 2 percentage points in 2023. In the same timeframe, urban poverty tripled from 5 to […]

Logistics industry should accelerate digital transformation
Statistics reveal that investments in AI-solution companies in Vietnam as well as many ASEAN countries are still inadequate while nations like Singapore, China, and the US have poured much more money on AI implementation. This has forced Vietnam to allocate more capital to digital platforms in both product manufacturing and distribution for further economic growth. The first step is for enterprises to realize the benefits of digital transformation such as increasing efficiency, building trust among trading partners, developing optimal supply routes, better administering transportation means, and making wiser decisions via cognitive computing using AI. Specifically, the national GDP of Vietnam could increase by over US$100 billion in 2030 when the logistics industry completes its digital transformation to optimize its communications with clients, supply chain management, and cost control. Along with the efforts of the business community should be the development of macro policies. Firstly, the country’s common logistics standard policy should be formulated in line with the standard trend and digital transformation rules of industrialized nations in order to ensure a perfect connection as to logistics software and hardware as well as traffic systems to create synergy. Secondly, the human resources of the industry should be trained as to […]
MWC 2023: Cisco and NTT team to accelerate enterprise digital transformation through private 5G
Private 5G networks are hot right now, especially in the realm of Industry 4.0 , and to rapidly enable critical capabilities for the sector – such as push-to-talk “walkie-talkie” communications, automated guided vehicles, always connected PCs and machine vision in predictive maintenance – Cisco and NTT have announced plans to collaborate to drive private 5G adoption across the automotive, logistics, healthcare, retail and public sectors. To put the prospects for private networks into perspective, a recent study from ABI Research – the Private cellular network forecasts report – forecast that the revenue opportunity for private cellular networks would grow from almost $7bn in 2023 to more than $96bn by 2030, with integration services accounting for almost 50% of those revenues. It said this underlined that a private cellular network for enterprises is a highly customised deployment that requires a high degree of expertise in integration and orchestration capabilities. The analyst said the market would be driven by 4G LTE deployment until 2030, when 5G connectivity will constitute most private cellular network deployments. Previously, this inflection point was expected in 2027-2028. As part of their bid to cash in on this growing market, Cisco and NTT plan to co-innovate and […]
