Phone app tracks cough frequency in tuberculosis trial, opening up monitoring opportunity
A man with tuberculosis in an isolation room at the Doctors Without Borders’ Kutupalong clinic in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Dive Brief: Researchers have used a smartphone app to assess cough frequency in people with tuberculosis (TB) and other respiratory diseases, suggesting the technology can enable remote monitoring. Writing in the International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease , the researchers describe the use of the Hyfe Research cough tracking app to monitor 565 respiratory disease patients. The study showed patients with TB coughed more than people with other respiratory diseases and experienced distinct responses to treatment. If validated in further studies, the work could support use of the digital biomarker to stop overtreatment of TB and improve disease detection. Dive Insight: Hyfe’s CoughPro app uses algorithms to determine whether sounds picked up by smartphone microphones are coughs. Because many people are next to their smartphone all day, the app can show how the frequency of cough changes over time and facilitate remote, round-the-clock data collection using existing hardware. Researchers at the University of California San Francisco worked with collaborators in Uganda, South Africa, the Philippines, Vietnam and India to assess the use of the technology in the monitoring of […]

Shasta County to close program that helps disabled adults. What’s next?
Shasta County’s recent decision to close a job training center for adults with disabilities casts some uncertainty on the next chapter for the decades-old program. The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on Feb. 28 to close the Opportunity Center based on recommendation from the Health and Human Services Agency that said the center was not financially healthy. The center will close June 30. Prior to the supervisors’ decision, HHSA Deputy Branch Director Julie Hope said financial assessments predicted the center’s expenses would exceed its revenue by more than $1 million during the 2022-23 fiscal year. Read more: ‘Mismanagement due to poor financial oversight’: HHSA to ask supervisors to close Opportunity Center Hope has said closing the Opportunity Center will allow a state-funded regional agency to assign the job training program to a new provider. But it isn’t known who the new provider will be. The county is working with Far Northern Regional Center to find a new provider to take over the Operation Center, and the deadline to submit a proposal is March 15, county community relations specialist Amy Koslosky said in an email. In Orthodox communities where women don’t read Torah, Purim offers a rare opportunity
QUEEN ESTHER, cloaked in splendor. Mordechai passes on the all-important information on the Jewish community as Haman hangs. When Alyza Lewin became a bat mitzvah in 1977, the fact that she had a ritual ceremony at all was still relatively revolutionary in Orthodox circles. But she took the rite of passage a step further, and did something that, for Orthodox Jews at the time, was considered the exclusive province of men. She chanted the Scroll of Esther , known as the Megillah, in front of a mixed-gender audience in suburban Washington, D.C. on the festival of Purim. Among the crowd were her grandfathers, who were both Orthodox rabbis. Lewin was the eldest of two daughters, and her father wanted to find a ritual she would be allowed to perform while remaining within the bounds of traditional Jewish law. Women reading the Torah “My father, when it came time for the bat mitzvah, was trying to figure out what was something meaningful that a young woman could do,” she said. “So he decided: My Hebrew birthday is four days before Purim — he would teach me how to chant Megillat Esther.” For many modern Orthodox women more than four decades […]
Is There Now An Opportunity In Marshalls plc (LON:MSLH)?
Source: Shutterstock While Marshalls plc ( LON:MSLH ) might not be the most widely known stock at the moment, it saw a significant share price rise of over 20% in the past couple of months on the LSE. With many analysts covering the stock, we may expect any price-sensitive announcements have already been factored into the stock’s share price. However, could the stock still be trading at a relatively cheap price? Today I will analyse the most recent data on Marshalls’s outlook and valuation to see if the opportunity still exists. View our latest analysis for Marshalls What’s The Opportunity In Marshalls? Great news for investors – Marshalls is still trading at a fairly cheap price. My valuation model shows that the intrinsic value for the stock is £4.38, but it is currently trading at UK£3.20 on the share market, meaning that there is still an opportunity to buy now. Although, there may be another chance to buy again in the future. This is because Marshalls’s beta (a measure of share price volatility) is high, meaning its price movements will be exaggerated relative to the rest of the market. If the market is bearish, the company’s shares will likely […]
Adani woes spark opportunity for rivals in Indian infrastructure push
BENGALURU — The woes engulfing India’s Adani Group are putting the brakes on the conglomerate’s rapid, debt-fueled expansion, handing competitors opportunities to step on the gas as New Delhi drives ahead with plans to build world-class infrastructure and transform the country into a $5 trillion economy. The group’s market value has plunged by around $130 billion since a U.S. short-seller in January accused it of "brazen stock market manipulation" and a host of other wrongdoing. The fallout is set to push Adani — which has vigorously denied all the allegations — to rein in growth as many of its usual funding channels dry up.
