Tapping high-performance computing for new business value
HPE GreenLake for HPC can help advance traditional business outcomes — from fraud detection and intelligent operations to digital transformation. Credit: PeopleImages Many people associate high-performance computing (HPC), also known as supercomputing, with far-reaching government-funded research or consortia-led efforts to map the human genome or to pursue the latest cancer cure. But HPC can also be used to advance more traditional business outcomes — from fraud detection and intelligent operations to digital transformation. The challenge: making complex compute-intensive technology accessible for mainstream use. As companies digitally transform and steer toward becoming data-driven businesses, there is a need for increased computing horsepower to manage and extract business intelligence and drive data-intensive workloads at scale. The rise of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and real-time analytics applications, often deployed at the edge, can utilize HPC resources to unlock insights from data and efficiently run increasingly large and more complex models and simulations. The convergence of HPC with AI-based analytics is impacting nearly every industry and across a wide range of applications, including space exploration, drug discovery, financial modeling, automotive design, and systems engineering. “HPC is becoming a utility in our lives — people aren’t thinking about what it takes to […]
Influencer Laura Whaley Talks Building A Brand On Social Media, Small Business, More In Interview
Laura Whaley is a creator who has over 5M followers between Instagram and TikTok. Laura Whaley Between Instagram and TikTok , Laura Whaley boasts over 5 million followers. The Canada-based Whaley has made a name for herself for what she described to me in an interview earlier this week as “relatable work content.” Whaley started her TikTok during the pandemic’s nadir, when the virus demanded everyone become shut-ins and thus transition to working remotely. Whaley, like so many , soon felt isolated after the virus cut off human interaction. Naturally, she turned to technology to help fill that void, at least somewhat partially, and focused her energy into sharing her experiences working from home with other people. What was born of desperation has grown into a source of pride and turned Whaley into a thriver. A notable achievement, since by her own admission, Whaley “had no intention” of growing her following, let alone essentially becoming a celebrity. “I just started posting content of things that I was experiencing working from home, thinking no one would see them,” Whaley said of her influencer origin story. “The community I built online has really been from people that are like, ‘I can […]

Gov. Abbott To Speak To North Texas Business Leaders in Dallas Wednesday
Governor Greg Abbott will be in Dallas Wednesday, giving a State of the State address to North Texas business leaders. His address is an extension of the one he held last month in Austin, this time with a focus on the Texas economy as part of a luncheon hosted by the Dallas Regional Chamber. The governor has touted Texas as a powerhouse economy throughout the pandemic, which continues to prove true with the latest government data. Experts say Texas is good position to weather a potential national recession this year. “Texas has been outlier compared to the rest of the country during the pandemic due to a lot of the diversified economies and diversified businesses that we have here within Texas,” said Matt Garcia, senior VP of public policy for the Dallas Regional Chamber. Currently, Texas leads the nation in jobs created over the past year and also leads in corporations relocating their headquarters to the state or expanding operations. Many of those relocations occurred in North Texas, which is why the DRC believes the Dallas area is leading the way in the state’s success. "We definitely have a very business friendly environment here in Texas. That’s everything from […]
International Women’s Day: The Private Jet Companies Driving Diversity In Business Aviation
Currently women only account for 5% of the global pilot force VistaJet It’s been nearly 90 years since American aviator Amelia Earhart vanished over the Atlantic but the legacy she left behind continues to fly. The adventurer gained fame in the 1920s and 30s when aviation was a predominantly male industry, making waves as the first female aviation to fly solo across the Atlantic. Her various incredible feats inspired many women to follow in her flight path, but there is still a long way to go the industry is equal. The International Society of Female Airline Pilots revealed recently that the number of female pilots stands at just over 5% of the total pilot group worldwide, for instance, while C-suite boards across the industry are still lacking in diversity. However, there are many women making strides to break glass ceilings and encouraging others to do the same. On International Women’s Day, I look at some of the trailblazing women paving the way for women in private aviation, from captains and pilots to C-suite executives and business leaders. As well as being Captain on a VistaJet Global 6000, Léa Thiery is Vice President of the Women in … [+] VistaJet […]

King County Businesses Navigate Pandemic with Support From EDA and OneEastside SPARK
On February 20, 2020, Washington state reported the first COVID-19 death in the United States. Within a month, the state issued one of the nation’s first stay-at-home orders, a directive that was initially to last for just two weeks. OneRedmond CEO Kristina Hudson, however, knew that preparation was the best precaution. Under Hudson’s direction, the Redmond, Washington-based economic development organization immediately undertook a survey of local businesses to identify their greatest potential needs in the event of a prolonged economic disruption. “When we started closing down the economy, I was fortunate enough to have a team that knew economic development very well,” Hudson recalls. “We had a feeling this could last much longer.” Kristina Hudson (left) speaks with Isabella Casillas Guzman, Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), and SBA Region X Administrator Mike Fong during their visit to OneEastside Spark in July 2022. Based on the results of their research, OneRedmond drafted a plan to support the local business community. In working with their regional partners, that plan quickly grew to include 22 additional cities in eastern King County, Washington. Operating under the banner OneEastside SPARK — and supported with a $500,000 grant from the Economic Development […]
