Seaboard Station area business owners say nearby construction has limited parking, which has decreased profits

RALEIGH, N.C. — Big changes are coming to the Seaboard Station area in Raleigh. A mixed-use development is under construction where people will live and shop. However, it’s causing a problem for some neighboring businesses. Some business owners said the project is taking away parking spots from the customers they depend on. Michael Bell is the owner of the record store Hunky Dory at 111 Seaboard Ave. Suite 116. There is construction on massive new buildings outside his business. Bell said the footprint of the project is swallowing up parking spots where customers used to park. He said the construction has taken away an entire row of public parking, which is about 20 parking spots. “We were already struggling with finding places to park,” Bell said. Mon Macaron dessert shop founder Autumn Hicks echoed Bell’s sentiments about parking. “The last six months, it has been a major issue for us,” Hicks said. Bell said there are times it’s so bad that even his employees can’t find a parking spot to open the doors to the business. “Are you pushing us out, or are you going to do something about this?” Bell asked of city leaders. Bell wants to know […]

Netflix: Password sharing ‘undermines’ business, warns crackdown will intensify

Yahoo Finance entertainment reporter Allie Canal breaks down Netflix’s fourth-quarter earnings results and the news that Reed Hastings will be stepping down from his CEO role. Netflix ( NFLX ) freeloaders, beware! The company is ramping up its password sharing crackdown. Following fourth quarter earnings results on Thursday that saw subscriber numbers leap past expectations, the company warned in its quarterly letter to shareholders it will be intensifying its push to combat password sharing. "Later in Q1, we expect to start rolling out paid sharing more broadly. Today’s widespread account sharing (100M+ households) undermines our long term ability to invest in and improve Netflix, as well as build our business," Netflix said. The company explained it’s been building additional new features to improve the overall Netflix experience, including the ability for members to review which devices are using their account and to transfer a profile to a new account. Members can also pay extra if they want to share the platform with people they don’t live with. "As we work through this transition – and as some borrowers stop watching either because they don’t convert to extra members or full paying accounts – near term engagement, as measured by […]

Baltimore-based Bond Distributing Co. sells after 72 years

A third-generation Baltimore company changed hands last month in a deal spurred in part by decades-long friendships in the tight-knit beverage distribution industry. Bond Distributing Co., which was founded in 1950 , sold at the end of the year to the Honickman, Origlio and Bergson Organization (HOBO), which is made up of the three eponymous families and focuses on beer distribution primarily in the northeast. The acquisition marks HOBO’s entrance into Maryland, where Bond distributes beer, wine and liquor to 3,000 retail customers. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Matrix Capital Markets Group Inc. brokered the deal and Venable LLP provided legal counsel to Bond. Selling Bond was “the hardest decision we ever made” said Randi Settleman, who served as president at Bond prior to the sale and represented the third generation in the business, along with her sister Leslie Schaller, who served as vice president. The decision came down to “right time, right people,” Settleman said, and was made easier by their familiarity with the families that comprise HOBO as well as the fact that pretty much everything about Bond will stay the same. The name will remain as will all of its roughly 140 employees […]

Kardashian paid a visit to Harvard Business School, where she and Jens Grede, the co-founder of Kardashian’s shapewear business SKIMS, were invited to speak to students about the success of their business. “Kim, what do you think of Boston?” a reporter for NBC Boston asked as she left the business school Friday afternoon. “Love it,” Kardashian said. Fittingly, Kardashian and Grede visited a class dedicated to direct-to-consumer businesses called “Moving Beyond DTC,” taught by Professors Len Schlesinger and Ayelet Israeli and Executive Fellow Matt Higgins. Before arriving on campus, Kardashian sparked social media intrigue when she posted a blurry photo of the new Boston Common statue “The Embrace” on her Instagram at around 10:30 a.m., leaving many wondering why she was visiting the city. Owner hopes his roofing business will rise to new heights in Steamboat Springs

Storm Peak Roofing Company owner Zach Harper, right, is joined by his wife Hunter Gansmann and the couple’s son Paxton for this family photograph. Harper recently started Storm Peak Roofing, and his wife owns Salon Monet in Steamboat Springs. Zach Harper envisions his business venture as a way to service the community he has come to love while securing his family’s future in Northwest Colorado. “We’re just a young family trying to make it in Steamboat,” said Harper, who founded Storm Peak Roofing Company earlier this month. “We are feeling the struggle and just trying to make it work.” Harper came to Steamboat Springs when he was 18 years old to attend Colorado Mountain College and pursue a degree in the ski and snowboard business. He spent a couple of years working at Steamboat Resort before taking a job in construction. Several years ago, he shifted his focus to roofing, and he has been working for a local roofing company for the past six years. This year he decided the time was right to venture out on his own. “We have not done any marketing or advertising at all, and we’ve got quite a few jobs lined up,” Harper […]
