Nuclear power for shipping; understanding the opportunity in context

Nuclear power for shipping; understanding the opportunity in context

Refreshed technologies hold promise in addressing shipping’s clean energy needs, but solutions won’t emerge in the short term, writes Patrick Ryan, a vice president at ABS. Using nuclear power to propel ships is not a new concept, but the intense interest in commercial maritime decarbonisation is pushing curiosity around the topic to new heights. This is unlikely to be your father’s nuclear power, as it is based on new technologies that differ from legacy power plants. What is clear is that – in common with other alternative fuels – the importance of doing nuclear power right outplays any consideration of timescale or technology. However, that creates a tension for the maritime industry, where near term solutions are sought for problems that enable a ‘business as usual’ scenario. Nuclear has the potential to play a role in the future of maritime energy, but when it will become available is the critical question. There is too much technological development, too much risk to manage and too many stakeholders to put arbitrary timescales in place on its viability as an option for shipping. To judge by the degree of debate, nuclear might be seen as a solution in waiting. On a simple […]

Is There Now An Opportunity In Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG)?

Is There Now An Opportunity In Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG)?

Source: Shutterstock Intuitive Surgical, Inc. ( NASDAQ:ISRG ) led the NASDAQGS gainers with a relatively large price hike in the past couple of weeks. With many analysts covering the large-cap stock, we may expect any price-sensitive announcements have already been factored into the stock’s share price. However, could the stock still be trading at a relatively cheap price? Today I will analyse the most recent data on Intuitive Surgical’s outlook and valuation to see if the opportunity still exists. Is Intuitive Surgical Still Cheap? The stock is currently trading at US$244 on the share market, which means it is overvalued by 33% compared to my intrinsic value of $183.47. Not the best news for investors looking to buy! If you like the stock, you may want to keep an eye out for a potential price decline in the future. Since Intuitive Surgical’s share price is quite volatile, this could mean it can sink lower (or rise even further) in the future, giving us another chance to invest. This is based on its high beta, which is a good indicator for how much the stock moves relative to the rest of the market. What kind of growth will Intuitive Surgical […]

Huntington Ingalls: Recent Dip Provides Good Buying Opportunity

Huntington Ingalls: Recent Dip Provides Good Buying Opportunity

Frank Rossoto Stocktrek/DigitalVision via Getty Images When one thinks of defense contractors, top names like Lockheed Martin ( LMT ) and Raytheon Technologies ( RTX ) may first come to mind. However, what often gets ignored is the moat-worthy shipbuilder, Huntington Ingalls (NYSE: HII ), which is sometimes referred to as the "Lockheed of the Seas". It’s been a while since my last bullish take on the stock back in the middle of 2021, and it’s fared better than the S&P 500 ( SPY ), giving investors downside protection. This is reflected by its 6% total return over this time frame, which is ahead of the 4% decline in the S&P 500. Recently, HII’s stock price has taken a dip since reaching a near term high of $240 back in December, and in this article, I highlight why the stock is a buy for potentially strong total returns, so let’s get started. HII Stock (Seeking Alpha) Why HII? Huntington Ingalls has been around for over a century and came to its current form when it was spun off from Northrop Grumman ( NOC ) in 2011. Its shipbuilding divisions in Virginia and Mississippi have built more ships in more […]

Is There An Opportunity With Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:AMD) 22% Undervaluation?

Is There An Opportunity With Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AMD) 22% Undervaluation?

Source: Shutterstock Key Insights Advanced Micro Devices’ estimated fair value is US$95.7 based on 2 Stage Free Cash Flow to Equity Current share price of US$74.9 suggests Advanced Micro Devices is 22% undervalued In this article we are going to estimate the intrinsic value of Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. ( NASDAQ:AMD ) by projecting its future cash flows and then discounting them to today’s value. The Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) model is the tool we will apply to do this. Don’t get put off by the jargon, the math behind it is actually quite straightforward. Remember though, that there are many ways to estimate a company’s value, and a DCF is just one method. If you still have some burning questions about this type of valuation, take a look at the Simply Wall St analysis model . The Calculation We use what is known as a 2-stage model, which simply means we have two different periods of growth rates for the company’s cash flows. Generally the first stage is higher growth, and the second stage is a lower growth phase. In the first stage we need to estimate the cash flows to the business over the next ten years. […]

An Oft-Overlooked Sales Opportunity

An Oft-Overlooked Sales Opportunity

Amid increasing signs that a slowdown in the economy is at hand, dealers should look to women, especially those who fish, in their plans to ride out the storm. So says a report from the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation that has been advancing industry interests for more than two decades with research data, market promotion and much more. In a nutshell: If in the past fishing was primarily viewed as a guy thing, that boat has left dock. RBFF’s 2022 study — conducted with global market-research firm Ipsos — identified women as composing 37% of all anglers, the largest share on record. Some 2.8 million more female anglers hit the water in 2021 than in the five previous years, and 3.8 million more than a decade ago. Women anglers in 2021 undertook a total of 288 million fishing trips. Yet the research also revealed women continue to face adversity and underrepresentation in the fishing community. For example, almost half of female anglers indicate they do not feel respected by the angling community, and a whopping 77% don’t see themselves represented in advertising for fishing gear and apparel. While the study doesn’t directly address dealer initiatives toward women anglers, […]

Why Analysts Are Pointing to a Big Opportunity in Silver

Why Analysts Are Pointing to a Big Opportunity in Silver

Peruse the list for unusual activity in the derivatives market for the midweek session and you might see an intriguing name pop up: Silvercrest Metals ( SILV ). Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Silvercrest specializes in precious metal exploration and production. Primarily, it focuses operations on its Las Chispas Mine, in Sonora, Mexico, where studies indicate that it ranks among the highest-grade primary silver projects globally . Fundamentally, this status should unequivocally represent good news. Back when the COVID-19 crisis first capsized the U.S. economy, the Federal Reserve responded with an unprecedented injection of liquidity into the monetary system. And following the recovery from the spring doldrums of 2020, both SILV stock and the underlying silver market rebounded strongly. Unfortunately, since late 2020 through the middle of 2021, silver prices largely went rangebound. From there, silver incurred a decidedly bearish downtrend. Still, it appears that the white metal bottomed late last year. And across the last several weeks, SILV stock and the underlying asset took a bullish turn. Indeed, commodities expert Thomas Bills points out that silver actually bottomed in August 2022. Further, the analyst doesn’t see any signs of the metal slowing down . In fact, Bills wrote, […]
